Great old movies?

I’m sick of flicking through every pay site I’ve got and not finding anything new or recent I want to watch. Or being disappointed with an over hyped new film.

So, I’ve decided to watch old movies. I used to love them when I was a child. So, hit me with your favourite movies black and white, up to the 90’s. The must sees.

My favourite are;

Gone With The Wind
Waterloo Bridge
The Ghost & Mrs Muir

Kind Hearts and Coronets
12 O Clock High
The Wicker Man
All the President's Men
Gregory's Girl
Strictly Ballroom

Do you have the Talking Pictures channel? Lots of old black and white films there, many of them filmed in post-war London, which is interesting even if the plot isn't up to much.

Casablanca - in fact, almost anything with Humphrey Bogart
The Third Man
Stagecoach - original version only
And if you want more John Wayne, Rio Bravo and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are two of my favourites.
This Happy Breed
Great Expectations, with John Mills
Brief Encounter
The Blue Lamp
Pimpernel Smith - Leslie Howard (on YouTube last time I looked)
Night Train to Munich - Rex Harrison
The classic British war films, such as Dambusters
Zulu

Am sure I will think of more!

End of the Affair
Passport to Pimlico

smellmel22 · 16/12/2023 21:37

Screwball classics: The Awful Truth, The Palm Beach Story, The Lady Eve, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
Drama/Thrillers: Shadow of a Doubt, Black Narcissus, The Manchurian Candidate, The Maltese Falcon, Yield to the Night
Musicals: Calamity Jane, Singin' in the Rain, A Star is Born (1954)

AzureBlue99 · 16/12/2023 22:55

The Ipcress File was on earlier. That was enjoyable.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 16/12/2023 23:17

It’s not black and white but Leave Her To Heaven is a fabulous film. Her wardrobe alone is glorious.

Gaslight
Rebecca
Citizen Kane
All About Eve
Dragonwyck
I adore The Ghost And Mrs Muir.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/12/2023 23:28

The old musicals for me
Calamity Jane
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Carousel
The sound of Music

All old fashioned and not PC at all but I love them.

mogtheexcellent · 16/12/2023 23:32

I love Bringing up Baby, Vivacious Lady and Arsenic and Old Lace. Screwball Comedies are the best for winter dark hours in my opinion. I think the first two are still on BBCiPlayer.

Cincinnatus · 16/12/2023 23:33

Mommie Dearest

MagpieCastle · 16/12/2023 23:33

b&w…
I know where I’m going (wonderful!)
The Bishop’s wife (lovely at Christmas time)
Harvey

70’s
The way we were

I was thinking only today how much I’d love to watch The Ghost & Mrs Muir again.
Another vote for Before Sunset. It captures being young, carefree and falling in love while everything is still ahead of you

Manzana · 17/12/2023 01:15

echoing above I also like the Ghost and Mrs Muir
Blythe Spirit
It Happened One Night
Roman Holiday

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 17/12/2023 01:24

12 Angry Men
Rear Window
The Scarlet Pimpernel (80s)

An Affair to Remember

CherryogDog · 17/12/2023 08:14

I love the old movies too, TPTV is the best channel for them.
Recently I've watched
Don't Talk to Strange Men
Don't Take Candy from a Stranger, both films very suspenseful.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
I can't remember the name but it starred Joan Crawford, her husband and his mistress were plotting to kill her.
Any film with Joan Crawford 🙂
Kiss Before Dying

Also on TPTV (nothing to do with your quest @OhWhatToCook ) is a series called Look at Life, short films of about 10 minutes, looking at all sorts of things in the 50s, such as police dogs, building and construction works, fashions, seaside holidaymakers, motor racing.

Katharineblum · 17/12/2023 08:46

@CherryogDog agree. DP is constantly alternating between wheeler dealers and Talking Pictures. I’m actually stating to enjoy Talking pictures, WDs not so much 😂 The look at life series is really good. The other night we watched the old BBC ghost story for Christmas series made in the 70s on Talking Pictures. Very atmospheric!

ThePlantKiller · 17/12/2023 08:48

I love old movies, my DF was a big fan of then so I grew up watching them (particularly musicals) and try to watch a couple a month.

Will second anything with Humphrey Bogart, noir ones such as The Big Sleep and In A Lonely Place are great.

The original Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor is wonderful.

Seasonal ones - Christmas in Conneticut and The Bishop's Wife.

I think that Joan Crawford film is Sudden Fear.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/12/2023 09:47

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
All the Elvis Presley films
Singing in the Rain
Guys and Dolls

CherryogDog · 17/12/2023 09:56

@CrossPurposes thanks, that's the one!
@Katharineblum DP doesn't watch WD, but he's obsessed with How It's Made. The repetitive music on it really gets on my tits. But bizarrely about 3 minutes into the episode he falls asleep and I turn the sound off 😁
Glimpses is another series I like, but for some reason need to search for that, rather than set as series record.
I've just thought of another film I watched recently, again I can't remember the name. A little boy loses (or spends) his bus fare and walks home from school. He then makes up a story about the bus driver not letting him on the bus because he didn't have the money.
There's an investigation etc, won't say anymore as don't want to spoil it for anyone who watches it.
