Just watched this, really enjoying it - then it just finished! Very disappointing ending..... 🤔

@GonksAreNotJustForChristmas

What a snide comment.

Have you misunderstood the nature of an internet forum? And indeed this thread? It's a discussion including different views. Yours are as valid as mine - and vice versa.

Baffling to be so pointedly rude.

But the idea of relatable characters is usually movie-making 101

Sorry, this comment did make me laugh though.

Frank Skinner.

I really liked the "constant errors in realism", I took that to be one of the director's artistic decisions, given the dystopian theme.

Our own disconnect with reality.

Would never have guessed that in a million years. Must be what LA people feel in their concrete bubble.

As you can guess my reaction went through the following phases of 🙄🤣😡🤬
At the end, I felt I had wasted two hours of life that I will never get back.

Showmethesunny · 12/12/2023 22:34

Honestly it never even got going. I didn’t get the point - and I really like ambiguous random stuff

The emergency alert system on the screen in the bunker at the end specificaly mentions radiation. It says:

"White House and major cities under attack by rogue armed forces.

Elevated radiation levels detected near multiple population centres.

Seek Shelter."

Yes you are right, thank you for the reminder, this was at the very end, as in after all the nonsense with animals acting strange and teeth falling out. I took that to mean nuclear power plants were starting to fail and leaking as a result of the cyber attacks.

Jacfrost · 12/12/2023 22:39

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:11

@MercanDede it was an allegory, not supposed to be realistic. The changing picture in the living room was the clue.

I thought the picture changed! Thought I'd imagined it

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:40

It changed twice, as did the background wallpaper in the bedroom.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:42

I also took the radiation reference to be related to power plant failures rather than a bomb. That fitted much better with the whole theme.

Showmethesunny · 12/12/2023 22:43

I do find it helpful to memorise key phone numbers (I dial manually rather than use a shortcut) and I often use a hand-drawn map to help directions stick in my mind

not sure memorising numbers will be helpful in the apocalypse. There won’t be mobile phone networks etc 🫤

Yes, in the US one fifth of power is nuclear they have what 100 nuclear power plants there? And they are not shy about putting them by cities. The whole Simpsons series made fun of this fact of life in the US.

I didn’t even notice. I was too busy throwing popcorn at the TV and being generally grumpy as I like all the actors.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:50

I took the non realism of the physical changes in the house to indicate this was not supposed to be taken literally. That enhanced my enjoyment of what I thought to be a fantastic movie.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:51

It was science fiction/surreal fantasy, people. And a great example of the genre in my opinion.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 22:54

Try Another Earth. Also surreal allegorical science fiction. Disturbing and thought provoking.

What's with the 'people'? How patronising.

We get what it was 'supposed to be'. Some is thought it was rubbish.

It's not about us taking it seriously or too literally. It's about differing viewpoints.

MercanDede · 12/12/2023 22:57

I liked Another Earth. That was the one about the duplicate Earth with duplicate yous….unless you’d died or been killed in a car accident but your duplicate hadn’t.

This I did not like.

Wandering Earth is a fun sci fi fantasy , the sun is expanding and to save the planet, all the nations build these giant rocket engines to turn Earth into an interstellar space ship going to an new star/sun.

I agree. You need a bit of realism/logic or science fact in a sci fi film for it to be enjoyable. Leave the World Behind was truly awful in my opinion.

MercanDede · 12/12/2023 23:00

Even Snow Piercer (series) made more sense than this film did.

I really enjoyed Snowpiercer! (In a suspension of disbelief way - I agree with you, there was enough realistic structure to hold up the premise of the series).

I enjoyed Snow Piercer too. It got a bit 🤨 when the mad scientists were doing skin grafts, exposure torture/therapy, and injections of wild stuff to make people able to move about outside and survive the cold without fully suiting up, but because it was grounded, I was willing to go along with it. It was a good way to do post apocalyptic survival.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 23:19

I like post apocalyptic survival stuff, will have a look at Snow Piercer.

mondaytosunday · 13/12/2023 00:43

I thought the ending was good! They don't know what going on so why should we? Not sure about the animals though - they really don't have a sixth sense - they react according to their nature and you wouldn't have flamingoes in NY or deer approaching a human trying to 'tell' them something. That was off.

Kernackered · 13/12/2023 07:40

MercanDede · 12/12/2023 22:01

No. The stupid dummy premise was the use of sonic and microwave weapons.

The scene of a the sonic weapon going off and the flamingos flying away from the heated pool at night- stupid stupid. Sonic weapons stun birds. If they are midflight, they drop out of the sky and if they fall far enough it kills them. The Flamingos would have been stunned and drowned in the pool.

Julia Roberts wouldn’t be running through the woods during a sonic blast either and then at the end hear “hey mommy” and hold a conversation. You are completely incapacitated, writhing in agony and if it went on as long as the film showed, you would be unconscious and wake up with temporary deafness and permanent hearing loss.

Microwave weapons would cook birds and they’d all drop dead whether mid flight or on the ground, in a tree in around 4-5 seconds. Humans- our heads explode and we die 8 seconds for a child, 11 seconds for an adult.

Magnetic fields, those are EMP weapons and they affect IT not humans or annimals…unless you have a pacemaker.

Interesting, thanks for explaining. Seems like the film makers didn't do any research at all then! I had vaguely heard of what happened in Cuba, Havana syndrome I think? So had that in my mind when watching it but don't understand any of the science.
