Just watched this, really enjoying it - then it just finished! Very disappointing ending..... 🤔

Just finished it. Had us gripped most of the way thru but very abrupt ending.

OhpoorMe · 08/12/2023 19:47

I had no idea they'd made this into telly! Have either of you read the book? How does it compare to that?

annonymousse · 08/12/2023 20:38

I didn't know there was a book but I'm off to Amazon to look for it now!

Yes!!!!! Bad ending... unless there is a second one?

mafsafanuk · 08/12/2023 22:43

Want to know what happened to his missing wife and what was the attack about? What a strange way to end it

AnyFucker · 08/12/2023 22:45

I thought it was terrible. Too long, too clunky, too try hard.

DoIOrNot · 08/12/2023 22:46

I haven’t watched it yet so I’m avoiding the ‘the ending of leaving the world behind explained’ articles. It’s obviously common the feeling that the ending wasn’t right.

Changingplace · 08/12/2023 22:53

I absolutely loved this book, had no idea they’d made it for tv, thanks for the heads up!

FuckYouEzekiel · 08/12/2023 23:04

I enjoyed it, i love that the Obamas were involved.

skibiditoilet · 08/12/2023 23:30

I thought the ending was appropriate for the story. You can’t wrap it up nicely. The world changed and they were left to deal with it. It was very tense. Great cast. I was hoping that Julia would stick one on Ruth tho.

thelastrose · 09/12/2023 01:06

The ending was certainly abrupt. I spent the vast bulk of the movie waiting for Kevin Bacon (even the opening scene, confused as to why Kevin Bacon didn't look like Kevin Bacon, until I looked online and saw the husband was played by Ethan Hawke!), and then Kevin was only in it briefly and in my view would have been much better in the Hawke role.

I have read that in the book George showed up with his wife, Ruth. I think that would have made for a much better movie as the daughter was annoying.

I guess you can extrapolate (or hope) that other annoying daughter would go back and tell her family about the bomb shelter with all its fittings after the episode of Friends ends, and that it won't be too late to do so, or that Julia Roberts will go into the house and find her, and the others will meet up, and they will all coexist in the shelter until whenever, as it is well stocked. It felt as if the movie was just getting into gear and then it stopped like that.

Bundtbake · 09/12/2023 10:22

@Changingplace is the ending the same in the book?

I've read the book and can't remember the ending but I do remember being disappointed!

thelastrose · 09/12/2023 10:30

In the book she grabs some food and walks back towards her family.

Teddleshon · 09/12/2023 10:36

I far preferred the book. Thought the film started really well but then was just too long with too many unnecessarily padded scenes. I’m always happy with an open ending but this one was a bit silly.

Loved how Julia Roberts looked and v happy to see an actress in her 50’s looking relatively natural.

Bundtbake · 09/12/2023 11:05

@Teddleshon
Me too regarding Julia Roberts....
She was on Graham Norton last week and looked like she had dressed to pop out for a pint milk - which I loved!

Don't read if you don't want any spoilers.,.

I quite liked the ending. I won't do too much of a spoiler, but I liked that the younger child, whom her brother acknowledged was basically ignored when she spoke, came out on top. The contrast between the conspiracy theorist prepper, Kevin Bacon, and his absolute doom versus the child taking comfort in her favourite show... That felt familiar.

My sibling is a conspiracy theorist and it's hard work. My view has always been that I can't do my life and go down those rabbit holes. How could I change anything? So I'm more with the child taking solace in the here and now. I was rooting for her.

EasternStandard · 10/12/2023 08:43

I really liked it

The ending was abrupt but it kind of made sense. I felt a bit short changed but the rest I thought pretty good

norfolkjmummy788 · 10/12/2023 08:52

Apparently the book has different ending

Fulshaw · 10/12/2023 09:10

How do you end an end-of-the-world story though? The story is the breakdown of society and the how we would deal with it.

gettingolderbutcooler · 10/12/2023 09:15

Didn't explain the animals either?

Fulshaw · 10/12/2023 09:22

The animals behaving oddly was very out of place. Didn’t fit with it being a cyber attack/war.

Bawdrip · 10/12/2023 09:33

Wasn't it something to do with magnetic fields being messed with? That explains the birds at least. And the deer would have been affected by the sonar attacks. It did need a lot more explanation though
