Just watched this, really enjoying it - then it just finished! Very disappointing ending..... 🤔

Why did you need to know anything about the relationship before? It wasn't about their marriage.

As I said 🤦🏻‍♀️ because to empathise with characters we have to relate to them, understand them, typically. It's why the horror trope often works in the context of a normal suburban family setting ... and then something awful happens. It's the suggestion that it could happen to us too.

You may have enjoyed the film anyway - great. But the idea of relatable characters is usually movie-making 101.

I don't agree. They just seemed like a normal family. She bought him coffee in bed and surprised them with a holiday. That's all I needed to know.

The Man and his Daughter were supposed to be mysterious.

@EarringsandLipstick I loved Don't Look Up too! Good job we are all different, right!

Yes! I know Don't Look Up divided opinion and some loved it.

Not only did I hate it, I found it so disappointing that usually excellent actors performed so poorly.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 20:58

Don't Look Up still haunts me, which I consider the sign of a good movie! May be a minority view but that's my opinion!

I didn't see the nuclear attack. Civil war ie tearing their own society apart was what was described.

You didn't see the big mushroom clouds at the end? That the 2 women stared at???

The civil war theory was just that - that character's hypothesis. The filmmaker (in the Variety article linked above) makes it clear there's no final explanation of events - but it's stated that parts of the US are being attacked.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/12/2023 20:59

The Man and his Daughter were supposed to be mysterious.

But they weren't? They say exactly who they are - and they are exactly who they are. There's no mystery.

theDudesmummy · 12/12/2023 21:01

I didn't see it as a mushroom cloud, just a smoke cloud from bombing.. There would have been a boom from an atomic explosion, which didn't happen.

Julia's character didn't believe them. We were supposed to be unsure if he was telling the truth.

I saw the mushroom clouds.

Absolutely! Not for me but as you say, we all like different things.

I don't mind necessarily not liking something. Like, I don't like Quentin Tarantino movies, but recognise they are great movies.

But I hate sloppy badly made works which both the movies mentioned are IMO.

boozeclues · 12/12/2023 21:02

I enjoyed the ending - makes room for a part two or a series (a series would be better IMO).

the CGI was a bit shit though

Whoops.

Won't keep arguing - but we are told about the radiation etc. it's clear they are witnessing an extermination event.

I thought the bombs at the end indicated a civil war not a nuclear one

How would that work? How would a civil war involving bombs happen in a few days?!

No, it's stated repeatedly that the US comes under attack (externally).

The civil war aspect is the hypothesis that after that, US citizens will continue the work as they'll fight against each other, elements of which we see in the movie. It's never confirmed what actually happens to them all (or wider society) and that was intentional.

I think DH came in talking and I missed some bits.

This is the relevant part about GH giving a hypothesis - it's not a definitive answer. The film doesn't give it.

G.H. is saying these things based on what he knows and what his experience of life has been. And had one of the other characters been given an opportunity to speculate, they would say something probably different and informed by what their experience of life had been or what they thought. In a strange way, what’s happening among these people becomes an analog to what’s happening as you and I are talking. This is how you talk about art, you try to puzzle it out.

The bit from GH on is the quote from the article, sorry!

boozeclues · 12/12/2023 21:16

Depends who was letting the bombs off.

I do hope they make a series out of it, I know it’s had some bad press (with some serious conspiracy theory nuts banging in about it 😂) but that makes it more appealing to me.

I work in IT and looking to move into cyber, so some semi related stuff now and I know how high alert companies are on this sort of stuff.

It really is the most cost effective way to terrorise a country!

EasternStandard · 12/12/2023 21:18

The daughter, can’t recall name, was staring for a pretty long time, I think it was just smaller attacks a nuclear one would have annihilated them pretty quickly

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 12/12/2023 21:20

Completely brilliant till the last scene.

Reminded me of 'How it ends' and similar disappointment.

Well it wouldn't ... eg think of Hiroshima etc. Those immediately hit / within a radius died instantly; the others died wishing certain time periods (including years) as a result of radiation. That's exactly why nuclear attacks are devastating.

EarringsandLipstick · 12/12/2023 21:21
  • within (not wishing)
