I just came on to ask if anyone saw Carlos and Karen being very cuddly during a Claudia bit. Are they a couple?

Also, there have been so many brilliant previous celebs from girl bands and boy bands. Similarly trained performers. And I do not remember this level of vitriol towards them. I love Layton.

Karim got a fair amount of hate on this forum.

I noticed that, too... would be an interesting pairing :)

Of course Layton is at the other extreme but where would you suggest the line is drawn if you want evenness?

Not having someone who has performed in a west end musical. Not saying there haven't been other celebs with a lot of dance experience but I think in general I would say the same about them too

I would agree, the line (if there is one) should IMO be based around professional dance experience - not e.g. dance lessons as a kid / student (which lots of people have, especially people in entertainment), but actual paid work where you are specifically employed as a dancer, especially when this comprises most or all of your resumé and it is how you earn your living.
(Similar to Masterchef - the amateur version doesn’t include people who work in professional kitchens or cookery schools, but those people compete in the professional version).
There will be some grey areas - e.g. singers (but I’d see some acts as primarily dance acts, like Pussycat Dolls), or actors who have done only one or two roles which included dancing, or people who were professional dancers years ago. But I don’t see Layton as being in a grey area, especially as he teaches dance.

LovedMyLastNameItHadToGo · 02/12/2023 20:39

I think Nigel said something about Katya being a part of him forever, it was all very gushing and a bit too close for comfort! Cue Katya sobbing like they’d broken up!

mydogisthebest · 02/12/2023 20:39

Loved Layton and Nikita. I almost want him to win to give the haters something to moan about but love Ellie.

Didn't like Bobby's dance at all. The lift was awful and they were definitely overmarked. I don't feel he deserves to be in the final

ChessieFL · 02/12/2023 20:42

Do we know how long Annabel did ballet for? Given that she became successful at tennis at a relatively young age I can’t imagine she did ballet much beyond pre teen age, and she’s now 57. Hardly the same as someone who earns their living teaching others to dance.

Yes, but let’s not pretend that without Layton in this season’s SCD the playing field would have been level, if that is what the public wants.

Not this year or previous years

ImNunTheWiser · 02/12/2023 20:43

I’m confused about the fisherman singers , were they just in a neighbouring studio and popped in to fill in a bit of time?

I agree with all of this ( except actually MY dog is the best) Bobby was definitely overmarked, and Dianne definitely didn't look confident in those lifts no matter what she was saying. Part of it, as Motsi said, is the dance is too big. It's been done before on Strictly but it's been done much better. I loved Layton's dance.

AmyandPhilipfan · 02/12/2023 20:46

Yes I think the age of someone also matters with regard to their experience. Layton is young and is still getting employment as a dancer. His skills and training are all up to date. Even if Annabel was a brilliant ballerina as a child I'm guessing she hasn't danced for about 40 years so will have started her ballroom dancing training at almost the same level as a celeb who has never danced. I was a pretty good tap dancer as a kid, just in a Saturday morning class, but if I were to be put in a tap dancing competition in my 40s I'm sure I would be absolutely hopeless now!

This is what I'm assuming

EsmaCannonball · 02/12/2023 20:47

No Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, no glimpse of Vito's Beast, and Nigel not even giving us his Dick, never mind his Curly. Oh well .....

TIM! (I really miss the Tayto threads on here. He'll always be Tim to me.)

DEBBIE MCGEE! (Peak Strictly contestant.)

If there is a god, tonight will be the night Tim and Debbie run off together and form the new power couple, Tibbie McHiddlegee.

Gutted that Nigel is out. Presumably they have footage from the camera-blocking on Friday and maybe one of the dress-runs today. I think they should, in the best traditions of Bullseye, show us what we could have seen, to fill the time.

No two-person final is a GOOD decision.

I see that they are being more judicious in their use of backing dancers and not forcing every couple to use them. This is also a GOOD decision.

It does annoy, at this stage, when the judging seems to reveal an agenda. They were searching for reasons to mark Annabel down, searching for reasons to mark Bobby up, and obviously decided not to get picky about technique when they wanted to hand out a 40.

Annabel shouldn't be bottom of the leaderboard. That dress was bloody gorgeous. I'd be wearing it round Sainsbury's. Bit odd that Johannes was dressed for Hamilton.

I've not watched EastEnders in a while but I'm guessing Daniel Day Lewis isn't going to be sweating over Bobby stealing his Oscars record. Is it cruel that I enjoyed the lift going wrong?

I really hate it when the judges scold the audience for not voting for someone. Layton's dance was more of a paso-flavoured showdance than a paso, and so just blurred into all his other dances. That louche libertine look did suit him though. Wardrobe did good.

Thought Ellie was the only one fairly marked. Would have loved to have seen her do a proper full-on quickstep, though, instead of a stop- start musical number.

Queue Katya sobbing like they’d broken up!
Exactament

But so many posters here love him or at least have a slight crush. Can you imagine how much more intense it would be for Katya who has spent 11 weeks with him six long days a week.

He seems like a gent, a nice guy, a good dancer and a real trier - I can imagine she might adore him even though there's nothing going on.

Plus there's the professional disappointment that she could realistically have made the final and it's suddenly been snatched away from her today.

I know. Completely empathise with Katya.

Late to thread 🧵
loved Leytons dance, deserved 10’s sad to hear he is getting hate, he is a ringer. But seems really sweet.
bobby was dreadful. Annoying that they gave him a higher score than Annabelle.
cannot watch tomorrow as the snooker is on.

Shock me shock me, a professional dancer does well again. Yawn, 40 like it's a surprise.

the80sweregreat · 02/12/2023 20:57

I like layton
I don't care who wins now tbh
They must train and train and it's hard
Not one of the easier reality shows for sure !

SheIsStuck23 · 02/12/2023 20:59

I was a bit disappointed tonight. I really liked Ellie and Vito but that’s because I love the film and I love that song, not because I loved their dance. There was too much distraction with the props and the other dancers so it was really hard to see how much actual QuickStep content there was in there.

Laytons’s just Layton. Of course it was an amazing dance - it was two professionals dancing together. I don’t feel anything about him or his dances because I don’t think he should be judged alongside the rest. Any previous dance experience the other Celebs have had doesn’t even compare to Layton so it’s a really weak excuse to claim it’s an even playing field.

Annabelle bored me - but I think that’s because I didn’t know the song and it was slow. Both of those factors make it hard for me to stay focused.

And as for Bobbie - he cannot pull off Johnny at all 😂 And that lift….. 😬 But he’s great to watch and he’s having so much fun so I’d rather him win over Layton!

From reading his thread though I do sometimes worry that Layton actually has a large fan base and that there’s a chance he may lift the Glitter Ball 😬

Really gutted Nigel has left - and he looked gorgeous tonight 😘

EsmaCannonball · 02/12/2023 21:05

There will always be the question now of whether Nigel could have won. Of all the remaining celebs both he and Annabel have been rescued by the public when at risk, Layton and Bobby have hit the dance-off. Would his vote have challenged Ellie? I would have liked an Ellie, Annabel and Nigel final, with Ellie as the winner, but Nigel clearly has a fandom.

Figgygal · 02/12/2023 21:09

Just ran through last night ITT just for some Nigel action. They were so loving the competition weren't they (apart from 2 weeks ago when he was so bruised)
Strictly's over for me this year

Taytocrisps · 02/12/2023 21:10

I was disappointed to hear about Nigel. I don't have a crush on him and he wasn't the most amazing dancer ever. But we're down to four dancers at a very early stage in the competition.

I loved Ellie's dance but didn't like having the extra dancers - it was a bit distracting. Much as I love Johannes, I wasn't blown away by Annabel's dance. Layton's dance was the best.

I said already that I find Bobby a bit bland and tonight's dance didn't change that opinion. I love Dirty Dancing but even I rolled my eyes a bit when I heard it was featuring tonight. The didn't have much choice with the lift, really If they didn't attempt it, they'd be accused of not doing the dance properly. So they did attempt it and then it didn't really work - Dianne was visibly wobbling. If I could vote, I'd give one vote each to Ellie and Layton. I'm not sure I'd bother with the third vote.

This is how I feel.

We know Layton and Ellie will make it to the final (most likely with Annabelle) and we know that Ellie will win.

We already know how it’s going to play out and we know how it’s going to end so watching it just seems so pointless now.

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/12/2023 21:12

I don't think Nige had a hope of winning.
