This is a series from a few years ago, and I think I watched series 1 but hadn't realised there was a series 2.

Apart from the SciFi aspect it focuses on how survivors try to find food, shelter, etc.. Also quite a bit about family ties / alienation. Modern setting.

Quite a starry list, eg Gabriel Bryne, Elizabeth McGovern and others who I recognise from TV but whose names I cant remember!

Just thought I would mention in case others like me missed series 2. Or never saw it first time round.

Available on line at https://www.channel5.com/show/war-of-the-worlds-cd10d1be-bf93-438c-a6b9-c28740f311a1

(I cant quite work out the tv scheduling but I think since saturday they have been showing 2 episodes a night, so if you have an on demand service it might be on there.)

Thanks for that link, OP. I have started watching on late night Freeview accidentally, but will never keep up with the random schedule! It's quite slow, but I have insomnia anyway ...

IwantToRetire · 27/11/2023 18:08

It's quite slow

You may be right, but even watching it for the second time, with such a big cast I need the time to try and remember who everyone is, how they are related etc..

But on the other hand I do like that it tries to reflect how people from very different circumstances might respond to an invasion from another world!

It's also on Disney +, so you could watch it on there with no ads if you subscribe.

I remember liking the first series, and it has some good actors in it. Series 2 is on my list to watch, thanks for the reminder!

Daisy Edgar Jones and Ty Tennant too.

My friend played a dead body in France 🤣

IwantToRetire · 27/11/2023 20:51

Thanks for additional info - Disney+ and dead bodies in France!!!

Have now seen that on Disney+ there is a third season.

Not sure if in the remaining 2 weeks of my Disney+ offer I will get through it all.

But interesting that they have thought it worthwhile making 3 seasons.

Okay, well I have now watched all 3 series as Disney offer about to run out.

So by the end of the 1st series I remember why I didn't think it was great because when they had to show any sort of aliens, or technology it was so bad, it was embarrassing.

But the whole post apocalypse storylines was interesting, so continued on to serie 2. Again alien representation minimal and poor.

But like the interweaving of the French story line with the English one, although so many implausible conincedents etc., and got a bit lost in the "science" behind what had brought the aliens to earth.

Started series 3 and can only think a totally different company was making it, or there was a lot more money being invested. Some good CGI.

But as always seems to be the same with these stories, the way it ended wasn't that satisfying.

I don't know far I am into it - I just watch what pops up on Freeview - but I think I'm well into S3 (the quantum entanglement stuff) and yes, it has improved massively! I'm so pleased that I stuck with it.

I assumed it had been made some years later or something, but when I checked the started making series 3 shortly after the end of series 2.

Yes the quantum theory went straight over my head, and I almost wished they could show the parralel universes side by side as I was always slow working out which reality was being shown.

I also thought, that without in anyway making a big thing of it, it was good to see women taking an equal part in the challenges the situation created.

AutumnCrow · 17/12/2023 11:39

I'm up to Season 3 Ep 6 on 5USA (via Freeview).

Apparently, there may be a Season 4 in October 2024?

There's a series called Invasionon Apple TV you may like if you liked this.

IwantToRetire · 17/12/2023 19:00

I was going to take up an offer from VM for Apple TV - but missed the deadline to sign up.

Typical.

Maybe just keep an eye out for it if it goes on to a diff network.
