And if you've now seen it, what are your thoughts?

I'm predicting I will love it no matter what. But look forward to discussing it.

They ruined Star Wars IMO

The new films are bad but some of the series are good though some really aren't - it's a very mixed bag IMO.

I didn't enjoy DT as much as before but the Good Omens 2 was a massive disappointment and while again I'd mainly blame the writing I do wonder if it's possibly his acting as well - Michael Sheen seemed as good as ever with same script.

Good Omens 2 was really boring and a huge disappointment from season 1. I think DT can be a bit hammy and I did think he just played the tenth Doctor gone bad a bit in Good Omens.

I enjoyed both Good Omens, yes both DT and MS extraordinarily overact for most of it...but there's some genuinely quite lovely bits too. I think DT was mostly channelling Bill Nighy.

I treat if a bit like panto to be honest. Dr Who too.

And I enjoyed this DT Dr Who far more than the limited few I watched of his previous Dr Who.

BezMills · 11/12/2023 15:43

I liked the DT ones except the bit where he turned into Dobby, that was kind of shit. Shame, as Sim played the master really well

BlueBox81 · 11/12/2023 15:49

I've just seen a clip of the 'Goblin Song' from the Xmas special and it was just really cringe. It's made me worried. I miss Matt Smith so much at the moment I could cry 😢 can they do a spin off with him (written by Steven Moffatt) so I can just watch that instead.

TripleDaisySummer · 11/12/2023 16:00

I just searched for it and yea - it begs comparison with Labyrinth and Muppets or even dark crystal (didn't like new series there either ) but lacking their style and first two sense of underlying and overtop fun.

Maybe it's just a bad clip and rest is better.

I think people in the media use this as an excuse to do what they want. Star Trek has lots of Black actors and gay characters. Its cowardly when they should just have the courage of their convictions. I dont believe the BBC do that as much as Hollywood so I would imagine if that were true, it would be a Disney requirement rather than something the BBC would do.

You have to consider WHICH Americans watch Star Trek, Dr Who etc.

The whole sci-fi fandom is alternative culture which is somewhat politically linked to the left and regards itself as progressive.

So the target market isnt reflective of the American public as a whole.

Bom bom bom,
Bom bom bom,
Bom bom bom bom bom.

Win or lose, sink or swim,
One thing is certain, we'll never give in.
Side by side, hand in hand,
We all stand together.

Bom bom bom - by-i-yah,
Bom bom bom - by-i-yah.

Yeah trailer gave me a bit of a 'vibe'

But DS wants to watch so...

WilmaFlintstone1 · 11/12/2023 17:42

I thought the Goblin song was for Comic Relief…or will be sold to raise money for it.

I have really enjoyed the new episodes and The Giggle was one of the best episodes I’ve seen in a long time. Then again Neil Patrick Harris is always good value.

Dh thinks they did the biregeneration as a safety mechanism after Jodie's rubbish seasons. So if Ncuti's seasons feel like a disaster, they'll just drop DT in (who a lot of people recognise - especially in the US - and lots of fans love - although personally I'm over him!). He's become the reset button.
Maybe the BBC is worried that the US won't like an ambiguously-sexually-oriented, Black Doctor.
Is RTD staying on as showrunner for Ncuti's season? Or was he just responsible for the anniversary specials?

Edited

It’s Disney plus they are incredibly woke so no won’t happen (The new South Park really takes this to a whole other level). If anything they would be pushing this agenda

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/12/2023 20:48

Just rewatched it all. Neil Patrick Harris is a joy on screen (even if the "German" script was an abomination). Ncuti's charisma is off the charts. David and Catherine have a Happy ending. Loved it.

DumboHimalayan · 11/12/2023 21:49

I thought the "German" script was deliberately, cartoonishly bad, in the way that only an English monoglot character putting on an extreme and terrible accent and sprinkling in the three or four Germanish things they know can be. Like "It is geraining" and "dollen" and "hobbyhorsen". Any German who can speak any English at all isn't going to use those things in English, so the obviousness of the badness immediately telegraphs to viewers that it's the character who's putting on a bad fake accent. I've got German family (tho I don't speak German much beyond "Hallo aus Berlin" level) and it had me laughing right from the start. I was also pretty impressed that an American can do an extremely credible British-doing-terrible-German.

ETA: I think the reason I liked it was that it was a little added extra they didn't have to do. Everyone soon gets to find out that the German accent is put on anyway (or at least, only one accent among who knows how many), even if maybe they're very young and didn't pick up on the signs. But they added the language clues beforehand too, partly to get a laugh, partly to make viewers feel pleased if they caught on early that it wasn't the character's "real" accent, partly because it supports the narrative to do it like that rather than having the accent reverting come out of nowhere. It adds complexity without making anyone feel like they've missed something. They don't always make the effort like that.

Binglebong · 11/12/2023 22:03

That song has the wrong, very human, voice. Too processed sounding.

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/12/2023 22:12

You're right dumbo of course but it didn't stop me cringing Wink

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/12/2023 22:13

(says the Frau that can't spell cringing! Grin)

BlueBox81 · 11/12/2023 23:18

@Binglebong I think that's it, the voice was so at odds with the creature it just didn't work. And it sounded like something you would hear in a Disney movie. To me it doesn't fit in with the usual Dr Who British quirkiness. I so want to like the new Who. Will try and keep an open mind and hopefully I will eventually get on board with the changes (like the new sonic screwdriver that is nothing like a screwdriver and the Doctor going clubbing).

Oh yes, it was cringey as fuck. I should think it's cringey in different, but related, ways for a German speaker who understands English well and can feel how badly Germans are being "imitated", and for an English-speaker who knows enough German to hear how bad it is and hear it as basically a pisstake of British people trying to sound German… it's exquisite multi-embarrassment Grin It did make me wonder what they'll do with the character in the German dub…

BigDahliaFan · 12/12/2023 07:43

There’s some clips on line of the actor talking about the accent and showing the script that is written in bad accents…he was following the script exactly. Also that he’d never heard of dr who or heard the spice girls song…it’s all quite entertaining.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/12/2023 07:49

I assume it was a nod to previous "creepy" toymaker type charcters. A sort of all purpose, Grimms Fairy tales, creepy Mittle European accent.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/12/2023 07:50

Although he did sound a bit like Herr Lipp from the League of Gentlemen.

This is all from Doctor Who unleashed which is the new Doctor Who Confidential. We watched it last night on iPlayer.

I really enjoyed the last episode too. I thought that the acting was much better as well, for me the first episode seemed very David and Catherine as opposed to Doctor and Donna.

CaveMum · 14/12/2023 21:43

Ncuti was on Radio 2 yesterday, he said the whole business with him having trousers was purely down to DT getting to wardrobe/on set before him and getting first pick of which half of the clothes he got. Which does imply that 10 was going commando!
