BBC licence fee - do you pay it?

We were out with friends and there kids last night. Kids are late teens and early twenties.

Our friends were saying how they don't pay their licence fee anymore.

They rarely watch live TV and stream everything. The kids were saying they never watch live tv at all.

We occasionally, once every few weeks watch the news but it got me thinking that we don't actually watch much live TV either.

Very tempted to cancel my direct debit but I've got the typical fear of the van roaming the streets and knocking on our door!

Who else no longer pays it?

Nope

OnionBudgie · 05/11/2023 17:42

No, I haven't paid for around three years now. There's nothing worth watching, it's all reality TV/drivel. I just fill in the required forms on the TV licence website and I don't get bothered by them. I subscribe to Prime and there are enough quality shows on there that the cost is worth it.

Baconking · 05/11/2023 17:47

Yep! Watch a bit of BBC & iplayer but listen to my local BBC radio station every day and would be disappointed to lose it

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 05/11/2023 17:48

I pay it as we watch live tv, mainly sports. Its not just bbc channels

Somewhatchallenging · 05/11/2023 17:50

I pay it. It’s worth every penny.

Notmetoo · 05/11/2023 17:53

Yes I pay we watch a lot of bbctv and listen to the radio. I feel we get our moneys worth. We watch something on BBC every day even if it is just the news and listen to BBC radio every day. We also have prime and netflix but don't watch that every day or even every week

BG2015 · 05/11/2023 18:03

We don't listen to BBC radio at home.

I do love some of their period dramas but not enough to pay £160 a year.

Cakeorchocolate · 05/11/2023 18:05

We do.
I considered not doing this year but dh watches match of the day, dd loves strictly.

We watch the occasional drama, we all like things like planet earth, the race across the world series and the wheel goes down well with all of us. I love Wimbledon coverage too.

We only watch it all on iplayer though because our freesat stops working between March and late autumn sometime thanks to a large tree that needs lopping!

trader21c · 05/11/2023 18:05

we pay it love the BBC website, iPlayer and BBC sounds

Cakeorchocolate · 05/11/2023 18:06

I say I love Wimbledon coverage - I wish they wouldn't piss about with the channels mid match though! And it's especially annoying when you can only watch on iplayer because it's sometimes impossible to find the rest of a match when watching later when they've swapped channels!

VictoriaSpongeForBreakfast · 05/11/2023 18:15

I pay it. The iplayer & bbc sounds are great & i love no adverts. I happily watch live programs on Freeview. I don't want to loose the BBC and I'm really sad that local BBC recently has been destroyed and is no longer properly local. No matter how biased you think it is the others are way worse, we will miss it when/if it's gone.

The price increase over the years has been far less than Netflix.

Yourebeingtooloud · 05/11/2023 18:17

We pay it. Don’t watch live tv but do watch iplayer and listen to bbc radio a lot. I’d miss the bbc if it wasn’t there.

Crossinsomekindaline · 05/11/2023 18:18

God no! Not paid it for over a decade. Bbc content is a load of dross. They've sent me a threatening letter every month for over a decade now.

They start a bit polite then get steadily more aggressive until they send a fake 'you were in but we missed you' postcard.

The tactics are pathetic. Bright red envelopes with block capital red writing visible from outside to try and shame people that worry what the neighbours/postman might think.

Straight in the recycling.

SoftKittyBazinga · 05/11/2023 18:19

Yes I do. I watch some live tv. I watch iPlayer. I listen to bbc radio. I know they get a lot of hate but I still value a lot of what they produce.

Jojoanna · 05/11/2023 18:20

Yes of course ,, I watch bbc and listen to the radio .

But the BBC is full of adverts. I listen to bbc radio quite a lot, and after every third song is an advert for another bbc channel or some bullshit fear monger tv license ad.

And you don't need a license to listen to bbc Radio.

Yes, because the BBC is quite possibly the best public service broadcaster in the world, and I don’t want our country’s media to descend into the sort of dross that is tolerated elsewhere.

when the pandemic hit it was the BBC that was straight in there organising content to help kids keep learning from home. I didn’t see Netflix, Amazon or Disney plus giving a tiny fuck about how British kids were going to cope trapped at home.

If we end up with the equivalent of Fox News Vs CNN for public discourse in this country we will be well and truly fucked.

PermanentTemporary · 05/11/2023 18:25

Yes. I know you don't need a licence for radio, but I listen to BBC radio and podcasts most of the time, probably several hours a day, and I think I should pay it. If I'm listening to podcasts by others, they're nearly always ex-BBC employees.

I watch iplayer a lot and I like to feel able to watch live TV if I want to. So for me it's well worth it. I can't really justify a universal subscription but it is a lot less for individuals that way.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 05/11/2023 18:25

I can’t imagine us being without bbc radio, the bbc website, CBeebies/cbbc, many tv programmes and bitesize. I really love the bbc, I feel quite passionate about it.

MsJuniper · 05/11/2023 18:25

We pay it and value the BBC funding model very much.

We pay for Prime and D+ subscriptions but nothing comes close to the BBC.

Hyppogriff · 05/11/2023 18:25

Yep

SummerSazz · 05/11/2023 18:29

Yes

BCBird · 05/11/2023 18:31

Never watch TV but do listen to bbc sounds and watch the odd thing on iplayer so still pay

megletthesecond · 05/11/2023 18:31

Of course I pay it. I've just had a long drive listening to BBC podcasts and am now sitting down watching Attenborough. Later I'll listen to radio 4.
We have disney plus on a deal for a few weeks but that's just junk tv I'm watching Kardashians. I have amazon for deliveries but never have time for films.
