A year on from the events of series one, audiences once again meet Helen Norville (Anna Torv) and Dale Jennings (Sam Reid), who are now established as ‘The Golden Couple of News’.

To the outside world, they present a glowing image of success and romance. But the truth is more complex…

Dale, although still honing his craft, has proved himself a steady and reliable co-anchor to Helen which impresses the new young CEO, Charlie Tate (Daniel Gillies), who has a very clear vision of the style of news he would like to see at ‘News at Six’.

Conversely, Helen’s mission to pursue and champion hard-hitting, uncompromising interviews has her at loggerheads with the new CEO…and she isn’t afraid to tell him what she thinks of his plans for the programme.

As 1987 rolls along, global stocks will soar and crash, Australia will prepare to celebrate its Bicentennial year, and Helen and Dale grapple with who they really want to be in life – and whether that path can be together…

Series one actors returning alongside Anna Torv and Sam Reid are: Robert Taylor (Longmire), Stephen Peacocke (Five Bedrooms, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), William McInnes (Unfinished Sky, Blue Heelers), Chum Ehelepola (Lodge 49, Lady Dynamite), Michelle Lim Davidson (Utopia, Get Krack!n), Chai Hansen (The New Legends of Monkey) and Marg Downey (Fast Forward, Top of the Lake: China Girl). Philippa Northeast (Home & Away) will also be joining the cast for series two.

Oh goodness, last night's episode brought so many memories flooding back! It covered a mass shooting incident I was almost in the middle of (driving the same route a few minutes later, got redirected at police roadblock)

A paramedic friend of mine was in the police helicopter, which came under fire. Thankfully they were able to make a safe emergency landing.

Next day I turned up for my ICU shift and was assigned to one of the victims. A young woman who had been dreadfully injured. She died around a week later.

RIP Gina.

martinisforeveryone · 11/11/2023 20:20

Oh @BoreOfWhabylon to the rest of us it's a very good drama but to have lived so close to it give another dimension entirely.

I also think Kay, the daughter's, an addict. Straight up vodka a couple of times and stealing from her mother's doing some pretty massive signposting there.

Netaporter · 11/11/2023 21:57

I’ve watched it all as I had done boring stuff to do this week. Sorry @Blondeshavemorefun 😂 Suffice to say I loved it all and I will see you all in the other side!

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/11/2023 22:10

@martinisforeveryone
The last series covered the Russell Street bombing. I heard the bomb go off and treated some of the victims of that too.

The series is very very good at interweaving real events with the drama.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/11/2023 10:57

and the 80s is quite an unusual period to cover i think.

I saw that too.

It is interesting seeing huge events and the timeframe you've lived yourself, through the lens of history.

It was a great recommendation @Blondeshavemorefun

There must be a back story to Kay as her mother practically went straight to the drawer , as if something similar had happened before .

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2023 20:31

I did beg a bit confused at the end about Dennis and Lindsey and man with moustache

OP posts:
MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/11/2023 06:54

the man with the moustache? is that Charlie? Charles? the owner i think

Pinktops · 14/11/2023 07:26

@Blondeshavemorefun thank you 😊

The one who asked who gave it the ok ?

I thought Lindsey was big boss ?

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 14/11/2023 14:23

Lindsay is the big boss over the newsroom, News at Six. Charles is the station owner.

I got the impression he'd not long bought the station when the programme started. Hence in the election night episode how he wanted to change the tone after Geoff had left, you know, bringing in the Irish comedian and insisting that Helen took more of the fluffy pieces instead of having a more serious style of coverage.

Dennis is chief of staff in the newsroom and Rob is the chief sports editor I think, who's also being tried out on news reporting.

Noelene has helped Rob out and she's also stepped up from being on autocue to more editorial responsibility. When she's stuffed up though, trying to cover for her and keep her out of Charlie's line of fire, Rob's caused the spotlight to fall on Dennis as bearing responsibility.

That's how I see it anyway.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/11/2023 14:40

Thanks @martinisforeveryone

I missed last nights e3

Anyone watch it?

but will watch tonight hopefully before tonight e4

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 17/11/2023 12:07

I watched it. Somehow I didn’t feel as engaged, even though there were some big plot points. I wish I’d saved it to watch early this evening, I was probably too tired to appreciate it properly.

butterpuffed · 17/11/2023 15:14

I've just watched this , am really hooked , and it's not complicated to follow like some dramas .

Lots going on , Helen's past being raked up and others' futures in the balance .

I'm sure that BBC2 often gets overlooked but it has some great stuff on it .

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/11/2023 16:00

I do find @martinisforeveryone if I watch when tired I'm not so impressed and rewatch the next day and love it

Hen why didn't see last night as was tired

Once mini blondes is in bed I will watch

I caught up with last nights revenge instead

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2023 19:03

Dale ffs

OP posts:
butterpuffed · 24/11/2023 18:46

Well, Helen and Dale are virtually no more , looks like Rob and his girlfriend [can't remember her name] could go the same way at some point because of her career . Has Helen lost her job by walking out while live on air , we don't know yet ...

Last one tonight . A series 3 has been confirmed but it won't be around till sometime next year .

martinisforeveryone · 24/11/2023 19:19

I'm going to be sorry it's over and looking for the next series soon as it turns up here.

Noelene is Rob's girlfriend. Not sure of the spelling.

It was so tense last night with all the drama surrounding Kay.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/11/2023 12:44

Thoroughly enjoyed this series (apart from the memories it awakened of Hoddle Street) and am in the process of rewatching to pick up the bits I missed first time.

Series 3 looks like it will be a belter!
ABC confirmed in their Upfronts presentation in November 2023 that a third series would be shown in the latter half of 2024, with the entire ensemble cast returning.
A press release on what plotlines the series comprises details that Dale is now considered News at Six's 'King of News', with Helen's international reporting having been met with "great acclaim", but as a "cynical network move sees the two former lovers pitted in direct competition, their kinship will be tested as never before", and "over the course of 1989, Helen and Dale will compete to cover a cascade of historical events… from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, to the Tiananmen Square massacre, the boycotts of South Africa's Apartheid, and the fall of the Berlin Wall."
