Hi, I recently had a difficult MH setback and am finding it v hard to stop overthinking. I don't want to use the extra meds I have as its really strong and I tend to check out too much when taking it. TV has the same effect, can you help suggest anything?

I love period stuff like Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Yellowstones prequel (?). I also love fluffy bollocks (not literally) like MAFSUK and true crime. I feel I've over immersed in true crime seen them all I think and it's neither calming nor comforting.

I've watched and loved twee C5 creatures great and small, the crown, Strike, Gosford Park movie last night. Anything 1950s set reminds me of my Mum I suppose and it feels comforting but I will try anything. I just need a good story, can anyone suggest something good? I have all the subscriptions too. Any ideas at all would be really appreciated, thanks.

The new all creatures great and small is all on catch up and very Sunday evening TV
Heartland is my other go to

HeathenPlayingHouse · 28/10/2023 19:39

I've just started a rewatch of The Good Place in Netflix- it's not a period piece and it's very lighthearted, but gentle and thought provoking at the same time 😊

I'm currently enjoying Cranford thanks to this thread ❤️

IncognitoMam · 28/10/2023 20:29

Have you seen the Queen's gambit? Rivetting and amazing costumes.

fortnumsfinest · 28/10/2023 20:31

I could have written your post op, I'm the same, need to watch wholesome tv, rewatch downtown abbey and call the midwife but also love MAFSUK.
I recently started watching Where the heart is which I'm enjoying and recently finished Monarch of the Glen.
I don't know if you watch soaps but I watch the old Corrie that is shown in ITV3.
I've read that people suffering from Anxiety tend to watch things they've already watched as they know how it pans out and this is certainly true for me.
Thank you to the PP who mentioned Hamish Macbeath. Away to find that

Gone fishing with Mortimer and Whitehouse. Its just two blokes fishing being funny in pretty places, but it's really relaxing.

Motherland is my ultimate comfort TV, watched every episode at least 3 times and still love it

Yes, this x 100 - there is something so heartwarming about the combination of two old pals, Ted the dog, the beautiful scenery, the gentle humour, the unspoken recognition of their brushes with mortality, the 'heart friendly' recipes which don't always work out...

DH is an angler and made me watch it, but now I'm quite happy to watch it voluntarily.

Also, Toast of London.

Oh I love every episode... except that ONE!

MissMarplesNiece · 28/10/2023 21:35

I was just going to mention Gone Fishing and am so pleased to see it's been suggested by others. I find it one of the most relaxing programmes on TV.

A Place to Call Home, an Australian drama set in the 50s, it looks like it is on Amazon and Acorn TV.

I LOVED this

SprinkleOfSunak · 28/10/2023 21:50

Frasier, the old episodes - on All 4. They’re just like a warm hug.

Heartstopper on Netflix - simply delightful.

Firsttimecaller · 28/10/2023 21:53

House of Elliot is on UKtv Play really mind numbing stories with gorgeous clothing.

Oh there's a flashback! I used to love House of Elliott on a Sunday afternoon ❤️ 💙 💜

MissMarplesNiece · 29/10/2023 11:55

@SprinkleOfSunak I was off work with mental health problem and a colleague sent me links to Fraiser clips on YouTube. I appreciated it so much. Fraser is still a go to when I want a good laugh.

tribpot · 29/10/2023 12:23

I'm watching the House of Eliott now, marvellous.

SprinkleOfSunak · 29/10/2023 13:47

@MissMarplesNiece

I hope you’re doing ok and looking after yourself. I had some time off too last year for the same reason, and watched so much Frasier!

I also find Murder She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder comforting, as both remind me of spending time at my Nan and Grandad’s house when I was younger.

FadedRed · 29/10/2023 20:20

The Last Detective with Peter Davison is good TV, his personal circumstances are less than perfect, the humour is gentle, but he usually triumphs in the end.
If you like ‘old-fashioned’ medical drama, then The Royal is worth watching, it’s set in the same fifties/sixties time period as Heartbeat, and the stories sometime overlap.

TheMarzipanDildo · 29/10/2023 22:18

Yes to Fraiser, Poirot, the Durrells and Gone Fishing.

Endeavour maybe?
