Hi, I recently had a difficult MH setback and am finding it v hard to stop overthinking. I don't want to use the extra meds I have as its really strong and I tend to check out too much when taking it. TV has the same effect, can you help suggest anything?

I love period stuff like Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Yellowstones prequel (?). I also love fluffy bollocks (not literally) like MAFSUK and true crime. I feel I've over immersed in true crime seen them all I think and it's neither calming nor comforting.

I've watched and loved twee C5 creatures great and small, the crown, Strike, Gosford Park movie last night. Anything 1950s set reminds me of my Mum I suppose and it feels comforting but I will try anything. I just need a good story, can anyone suggest something good? I have all the subscriptions too. Any ideas at all would be really appreciated, thanks.

Only murders in the building (not period but easy watching and very bingeable)

SeaPool · 28/10/2023 15:32

Oh - also McDonald and Dodds and the new series Mrs Sidhu Investigates is really lovely.

Detectorists is beautifully written about a group of metal detectorists.

JaneJeffer · 28/10/2023 15:38

Have you watched Father Brown?

FreddiesTeeth · 28/10/2023 15:39

Cranford had me howling. That scene where Judi Dench eats the orange is one of the best pieces of acting. Her eyes...amazing.

Hope you feel better soon OP

It might not be your thing but Little Women? The 2017 TV mini series is a nice watch. Only 3 episodes I think.

alexdgr8 · 28/10/2023 15:45

talking pictures,
channel 82 on freeview.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/10/2023 15:45

I've just binged The Gilded Age on now tv. By Downton Abbey creator, it's a very easy watch. Virgin River is pretty soothing (if a little dull).

iwantavuvezela · 28/10/2023 15:49

Three Danish series are on channel 4 that fit the bill

Seaside hotel (absolutely charming - have abut4 seasons on Channel 4 - Baddehotel) Highly recommend this

Nurses

Carmen curlers (quite sweet)

FayKnights · 28/10/2023 15:49

Lots of excellent suggestions! I’d add the baking show on Netflix, Sugar Rush, very easy gentle watching and my go-to if I’ve had a rough day

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 28/10/2023 15:52

Heartbeat!

craigth162 · 28/10/2023 15:59

If you have acorn tv it has some nice stuff. Whitstable pearl is my fave so far

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 28/10/2023 16:01

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Sanditon (period drama), but i enjoyed that? Or maybe Bridgerton...

The good ship murder on channel 5 is easy viewing... set on a cruise ship in the med, bit cheesty but lots of sunshine and nice scenery.

I also liked Shakespeare and Hathaway or Five Bedrooms

Hope you find something and are feeling brighter soon.

RenoDakota · 28/10/2023 16:06

Anne With an E on Netflix (modern adaptation of Anne of Green Gables).
Channel 5 Christmas films every afternoon.

The Wagatha Christie documentary on Disney +

Fabulous TV.

CherryCokeFanatic · 28/10/2023 16:38

Old seasons of bake off

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2023 16:40

The Repair Shop, which I first saw when staying with my parents and have become addicted to. Other things I only see there, which are very restful:
Countryfile
Landward (BBC Scotland)
Gardeners' World
Antiques Roadshow
Bargain Hunt

I have sometimes caught bits of another programme very similar to Bargain Hunt on BBC1 before Pointless. There seems to be an endless supply of antiques experts willing to make fools of themselves buying tat from antique shops, fairs, car boot sales etc and then seeing them sell for a pittance at auction, or even not sell at all. Nice soothing programmes, though!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2023 16:41

I second Bake Off. Also recommend Britain's Best Woodworker or whatever it's called on Channel 4, and the Great British Sewing Bee (BBC).
