University Challenge - what do we think of Amol?

I like him much more than Jeremy Paxman whom I found short-tempered and sneery (wish him the best re his Parkinson's obviously).

Amol seems warmer and more sympathetic. More like Bamber Gasgoigne who will always be my favourite I think. Still taking it seriously though. And he seems to get through more questions maybe?

Completely agree, @Piggywaspushed. Language changes all the time. This is not dumbing down. The purpose of language is communication. Nobody ever has any doubt what someone means when they say haitch. Accordingly, let them get on with it.

This week's episode seemed much more like general knowledge. I got loads right 😄

At first I didn't rate him, he spoke too fast and mumbled. He now has settled into the role IMO and watching him this week, I really enjoyed his presenting and his banter with the teams. He is younger that the past presenters and therefore a different vibe. I like him.

Really like Amol, although it is a bit ‘Write the feem toon, sing the feem toon’ with that desk.

Why is it wrong? I grew up in Scotland saying jye instead of jay - was that wrong too?

Only jye! I grew up saying aitch, but on moving to Yorkshire encountered haitch, and guess what, managed to grasp what was being said. I did switch to jay, though.

I was often able to code switch between jye and jay, haitch and aitch, dependent on audience...

Preferred Paxman and Bamber Gasgoigne, agree about the cheap set. Looks worse than the Young Ones version.

I think jye is more south of Scotland. I'm NE and nobody says it here apart from a workmate from Glasgow. I used to find it funny when she talked about "Jye jye bee" sports shop.

I have always thought, listening to him on the radio, that Amol doesn't finish off/articulate his words properly....sort of lazy speech. Really irritating.

He's fine on UC, but i don't like his style on T4 Today in the mornings. Very annoying.

Paxman had got increasingly unpleasant and sneery over the years, not just on UC but in his interviews too. I think Amol is a huge improvement.

I liked Paxman, but I continue to think as I said earlier on this thread that Amol is doing a very good job. I have no issues whatsoever with his enunciation. I much appreciate the very fast pace, especially towards the end of a close match.

On another note, I was absolutely delighted with the outcome of tonight's match. I'll give you three guesses where I spent my university years.
