A spoiler thread for us who are too impatient for tv pace thread.

I loved it, would love other opinions on it!
Great acting and I liked the fantasy elements amongst the more serious content too
A bit different, but sadly all too familiar for many women.

I'm on second episode. I wish she'd told the author what he did to the dog. Why didn't she?!

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2023 20:00

Alice is a very frustrating character, but a lot of it is because of Rob. She just can't get her act together:(
It is sad.

What is it , sounds interesting ?

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2023 20:04

It's a new five part drama on bbc one and I player
Stars Rebekah Staton and Alistair Petrie
She finds her husband who went missing years ago.

Binged it yesterday. Loved it!

Last episode was a delightful surprise.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2023 20:06

The final episode had me hooked.
So clever

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Took a while to realise that it's a black comedy though.
They've obviously set it up for a second series.

RoyKentsTieDyeTop · 31/08/2023 22:25

Just finished it! Very clever.

At first I found Alice infuriating but as it all became clearer why she did some of the things I warmed up to it.

When he started telling Cheryl how she’d coerced him into paying HER it was so true to my experience of a gaslighting fucker that I found it hard to listen to.

I might watch the whole thing again to see what little bits I missed. It was all so well put together and subtle in places.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2023 22:28

I thought it was more a warning about predatory men who pray on lonely people and try to scam everyone in sight! Cynthia's speech about how it's always the woman's fault hit a nerve.
It had a lot to say.

Watched the first episode and wasn't sure but then binged the rest. I absolutely loved it. Refreshingly different, innovative and clever. A wonderful mixture of humour and evil.

The ball at the end was masterful. The gardener's fancy dress costume was brilliant and she had me in fits every time she closed her eyes!

But the portrayal of a conman was excellent and really highlighted how skilfully someone can manipulate and gaslight another person to the point where it's easier to go along with the lies than admit you've been duped. The final scene was chilling.

Harpings · 03/09/2023 11:39

I watched this and loved it. Kelly’s storyline was so sad

IslandAngle · 03/09/2023 11:45

Really enjoyed it. It was very cleverly done. As someone upthread has said, Alice was a tad frustrating - but all the more believable for it. Loved the last episode. I hope there is a second series.

the80sweregreat · 03/09/2023 11:51

At least we saw Rob scam men too
It was a real mix of young and old
He didn't discriminate:(

For some reason I thought there were two series already and I had only just found it. I binged watched the first series thinking I had another five episodes to go. I was mighty disappointed!

Tourist29 · 03/09/2023 19:00

Did anyone else see and hear Kevin McLeod whenever Rob was in screen? Even the turn ups in the jeans

MoiraRosesBaybay · 03/09/2023 22:26

Just finished it today. It was very odd but I really liked it.

Pearl97 · 05/09/2023 21:56

I thought it was awful at first, then really loved it.
Absolutely thought I was watching Grand designs if I looked away from the TV!

fernsandlilies · 05/09/2023 22:17

what a beautiful house

IDontOftenComment · 05/09/2023 22:20

I really enjoyed it, it was a bit weird but it definitely held my interest.
Alistair Petrie is brilliantly obnoxious, I wanted to murder him myself!

what a beautiful house

Wasn’t it. Like a French chateau.

Doingmybest12 · 07/09/2023 00:06

I've just finished it all. Thought it was very good on lots of levels. Uncomfortable waiting for Alice to be believed. Thought the montage of news footage and Cheryl's speech was really effective . Also entertaining and off beat, good music . Thought casting was great. Maybe a bit too long.

the80sweregreat · 07/09/2023 18:29

I wasn't keen on the music, but I loved everything else tbh

SeaGirl2 · 09/09/2023 10:15

I loved It, took a while to get into but I still keeping thinking about it. He just kept lying even when obviously caught out and was so convincing. You can understand how his victims started questioning their own sanity.

Chamomileteaplease · 09/09/2023 15:00

@the80sweregreat
No-one has mentioned the acting of the woman playing Cheryl Harker. I thought it was awful! She talked in a really unnatural and weird way. Anyone agree?

I thought it really showed up because nearly everyone else was great in it.

Mercibuckets · 09/09/2023 15:36

Marianne Jean Baptiste? I thought she was fantastic and gorgeous. She’s got a tonne of awards and was in in Secrets and Lies which won the Palme D’or at Canne.

I preferred the Cheryl character to Alice too - I loved her rage in the final episode.
