Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

A couple of points - firstly, Lorna must have actually seen Aoife (alive or dead) because of her flashback to seeing the rash on Aoife wrist. (It was very quick and I had to play that part back to make sense of it). Lorna had the same rash, which Olivia noticed and commented that it was caused by hogweed. Lorna remembered that hogweed was growing outside the deserted house and that Aiofe had the same rash - that's what gave her the idea that Aiofe had also been there and hidden the rest of the documents.

Also ... what connection does Niamh have to the laundries? Is she one of the babies? She is pregnant and seems too young to have been one of the original "inmates". I agree that the older man working on the campaign seems a bit dodgy...maybe he's involved so that he can ensure that something stays covered up?

Niamh's mum was in the Laundries.

I read that in the character description on the BBC website, not sure if it actually got mentioned in the show but I could have missed it.

Philippa Dunne

My character is called Niamh, and she is friends with the lead character Lorna Brady played by Ruth Wilson. Niamh is a very focused, grounded advocate who is campaigning for the survivors of the Magdalene Laundry and the Mother & Baby Homes. She wants their voice to be heard, and she wants to get them compensation. She's not a survivor herself, but she is carrying the baton for her mother who is deceased. Her mother was a survivor who never lived to see justice or recognition for what happened, so she was very much campaigning for her mother's memory

I wondered why that James bloke was so invested in "helping" them

greengreengrass25 · 17/09/2023 22:00

Is James the solicitor with glasses getting them compensation?

DuncinToffee · 17/09/2023 22:00

That was some episode!

James Coyle being dodgy wasn't the surprise, his background however is

Yes. Knew he was dodgy.

That was a harrowing watch.

I think Aoife is at the abandoned house.

greengreengrass25 · 17/09/2023 22:03

Thanks

It is quite a lot to take in

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/09/2023 22:08

🤔 at there being an illness that makes you appear dead and then come back to life... that's a new one on me (and I'm a nurse!) Also how did she get out of the wall?!

longtompot · 17/09/2023 22:21

That was quite an episode. It's amazing what people will justify just to make them not look like the bad one (talking about Coleman's adoptive mum).
I knew James Ignatious Coyle was not n the level. Hope they all tear up their signed letters

Same. She is behind a wall, just not the wall we thought

I'm really glad that I'm watching this at TV pace, I think it would be too much to binge. I wasn't sure after ep.1 but this has just grown and grown.
I wasn't surprised about James but I was very surprised re his background.
There are lots of loose ends to be tied up next week.

JenniferBooth · 17/09/2023 22:23

Turns out we didnt have to worry about spoilers I thought i might watch the final ep now but i player arent putting them up till after broadcast anyway

AuroraCake · 17/09/2023 22:42

Colemans Mam didn’t do anything wrong. She adopted a child and gave him a home. This is such a complex area and really the law wasn’t as in force as it is now. It was all a bit bandit country. They did it in good faith.

I was very doubtful of this series at episode1, but each episode has got better and better. I am absolutely gripped by the whole storyline and Ruth Wilson has such facial control each little twitch portrays her thoughts.

This episode I realised instead of slumping back on the sofa I was literally perched on the edge of my seat gripping the arms!

Fantastic drama.

Edited

I guess she didn't think she did as she didn't question where the baby was coming from. I wonder if she, well they as it was her and her husband, would they have still gone ahead with his adoption if she knew he had been declared dead and his mum had no idea where he was?
I agree, it's a hugely complex situation and they thought they were adopting an unwanted baby.

Who is James?

The solicitor who brought Niamh the letter and said all she needed to do was get all the women to sign it

Not a medic but did a quick Google and found catalepsy. Which can be a symptom of epilepsy (amongst a few things).

And was also the same guy that Useless Skully found a young photo of in his search.

I felt sorry for Colman's Mum too; she seemed like a good person, and facing up to all that would have been awful for her.

Clawdy · 18/09/2023 08:03

Colman wasn't a baby when adopted though, was he? He has memories of being a child running through the tunnel.

LadyEloise1 · 18/09/2023 08:07

A donation made.

Doesn't that still happen in other jurisdictions?
I know when Irish people were adopting in the more recent past, afaik, from Romania and Russia, money was paid.

longtompot · 18/09/2023 10:41

@Clawdy no you're right, he did have nightmares about the tunnels and the person chasing him.
