Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Just caught up lots to take in this episode. Amy's story so harrowing. I think PP is right about Aoife still being in a wall. I reckon she's bricked up in the convent by the Evil Nun and Lorna saw what happened thought she did it in her sleep deprived state. They were both at the abandoned house though still not sure. Maybe there? James is working for the state to cover up his own atrocities. No word on fake Aoife daughter though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2023 14:08

Wow. That was some episode

A lot of detail found out

Child trafficking - shocking via nuns of all people

Poor Amy but glad she walloped him and even better the policeman said he tripped 😂

She deserves payment but I'm also hoping they all find their babies

Good call aoife May be in the wall and that's old Memories merges in

Coleman's mum thought she was doing the right thing tho why was he 4 and not a baby like the others

I'm glad we can't binge as honestly do need. Week to absorb what happens each week

Even more as it is based on a true story

Were such 'donations' made IRL, does anyone know?

benoticanarsed · 18/09/2023 14:44

Haha. As soon as Clemente said I'll tell you everything tomorrow you just knew what would happen.

I assumed all along that there would be no grave for her daughter.

Why does she think the woman isn't Aiofe daughter? I assumed it meant the guy in the pub wasn't really her husband.

The Cruelty Man was a real thing in Ireland. It refers to the inspectors of the NSPCC.

We were often threatened with the cruelty man my parents and teachers in the 70s.

My mother, standing by the phone when we were being raucous...

"Right that's it! I'm calling the Cruelty Man"

benoticanarsed · 18/09/2023 15:08

I thought Aoife maybe brought up Clements's and Lorna's babies.

Does (Anne from motherland) being pregnant have to do with anything?

Imagine how many of these young girls were raped, some by family members / officials /priests?

Not only that but also the cruelty by their families / sent away / abused by the nuns / having their baby taken away and no where to live?

I can't even begin to get my head around that. It will affect the families forever.

I think the Commission into the mother and baby homes found that it was impossible to prove one way or another whether donations were made in return for adoptions ie whether babies were ‘sold’. But the allegations have been made for years.

Payment for adoption isn’t a problem solely related to the laundries or to Ireland. Adoption agencies for foreign adoptions often charge tens of thousands of pounds. Some of that will be the running costs for charities that look after orphans or abandoned children, but there is a lot of profit to be made from desperate prospective parents by unscrupulous middle men.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2023 17:12

Yes takes two to tango but all the blame went on the mums

I did wonder if all happy with boyfriends or they got preg by rape /family 🙀🙀🥲🥲

This is all very intense, you can't look away from the screen for a minute . Unfortunately , I must have !........Lorna couldn't wait to get back to the women to tell them not to sign but then at then end , she told Amy to sign ...🤔

LadyEloise1 · 18/09/2023 18:02

I too wonder how many of those children were conceived because of rape / incest.
SadSadSad
Ireland had a very repressed society at the time. Sex outside of marriage was a sin.
Those poor women who were raped and then were sent to Mother and Baby Homes because of the shame on their families.

I think because Amy's baby was stillborn and she is incredibly traumatised. She has no fight left and Lorna gets that. She can use the money. Her baby won't ever be found because he/she died.

butterpuffed · 18/09/2023 19:33

Thanks @LittleMonks11 , that makes sense .

She told her to sign as she had such a horrendous experience that she deserves some money to treat herself

🤔 at there being an illness that makes you appear dead and then come back to life... that's a new one on me (and I'm a nurse!) Also how did she get out of the wall?!

Catalepsy apparently! Shock

Catalepsy - Wikipedia

Some stories on the internet about it. One man in Spain for example that was sent to the morgue, after it was believed he was dead!

Catalepsy Is a Condition That Makes You Look Like You Are Dead (businessinsider.com)

There's a condition that makes people think you're dead when you're not — and it could explain why three doctors sent a living man to the morgue

Three separate doctors declared the man dead.

PhilippePhiloppe · 18/09/2023 22:26

The Victorians were terrified of being accidentally buried alive. There was a whole industry around grave mechanisms to prevent one being accidentally buried alive, such as ‘grave bells’ - where a string was tied to the finger of the deceased, connected to a bell on the surface, so they could ring if they were accidentally buried alive. This might be the source of the phrase ‘saved by the bell’.

I think the fear came from cases where someone with a very low pulse rate or shallow breathing ‘came alive’ during their funeral - but it could also be due to other ‘Lazarus’ situations.

Theres also Lazarus syndrome - where after a cardiac arrest, a person can return from the dead. According to Wikipedia it’s very rare but it does happen, with the deceased being technically dead - no pulse, no breath - but returning to life some time later. Sometimes in the morgue. Shivers…

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/09/2023 07:59

If she has got catalepsy you'd think that would be something her husband might have mentioned to the police....

Omg at saved by the bell 😳 I always said I wanted to be buried with a mobile phone just in case 😬

I'm swaying towards the daughter of Aoife being Lorna's daughter now.

There's a lot to wrap up in the last episode.

Yes, perhaps not the sharpest tool in the box.

butterpuffed · 19/09/2023 08:19

If it's catalepsy it's a bit of a stretch too far for an already complicated drama !

Thanks anyway Blondes .

ImTheBakerLiteGirl · 19/09/2023 10:08

Where is the husband? Is he still in jail? Seemed to have a big part...now nothing. And the "daughter".

And is no-one looking for Aoife any more?

ellebelli · 19/09/2023 11:05

So are we to believe that Aoife was put into the wall but somehow got out?not sure I can buy that.
Or is she dead but not dead somewhere else?
Who was the daughter if not the daughter?
Despite thinking he was a bit of a plonker in the first episode I really like the older policeman

I R.E.M. the bell

Mary higgens Clark did a book about this

Ans as she was buried alive she rang her bell but someone had taken the middle bell but out so the bell moved but silent

Well, since they gave him a complete personality change half-way through, yes.
