Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack are teaming up for a gripping new BBC drama, which is inspired by the horrifying revelations around Ireland's Magdalene Laundries.

The Woman In The Wall follows the horrors experienced by Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson) is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house.

Lorna is chilled to the core as she has no idea who the dead woman is or if she could even be responsible for the apparent murder herself. This is a deadly possibility because Lorna suffers from extreme bouts of sleepwalking, which started around the time she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in the Kilkinure Convent.

The Woman in the Wall follows Lorna Brady (Wilson), a woman who was incarcerated in a convent from a young age, where she traumatically gave birth – only to have the baby taken away from her to whereabouts unknown.

The awful treatment she endured continues to impact her life, causing extreme bouts of sleepwalking that end with her waking up in strange places with no memory of how she got there.

While her specific story is a work of fiction, the Magdalene Laundries were very real and are thought to have blighted the lives of tens of thousands of women.

Although their history dates back further, more is known about the practices of these institutions in the 20th century, where inmates entered via the criminal justice system, reformatory schools and the Health and Social Services sector.

Once inside, they would have to carry out unpaid labour, while many former inmates have reported being abused.

Magdalene Laundries became the subject of a media scandal in the 1990s, when a mass grave holding 155 bodies was discovered on the former grounds of one such institution in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Whoah @BitOutOfPractice Don't watch then? Or wait until the final episode and just watch the last 10 mins?

LadyEloise1 · 12/09/2023 09:55

I think Ruth Wilson is great too in it.
I think her accent is very well done.
I know others have grumbled about it on here.
It's not a Mayo accent, where it is supposedly set. It's more a neutral, middle class Dublin accent.

I'm still hoping her daughter is alive and was adopted to America, like Philomena's son, rather than being dead.
Being dead would be more realistic. Sad

aqiarious · 12/09/2023 09:58

Yes! Bloody get on with it! Jeez it’s really slow with all the dream / hallucination scenes! Get on with the story!

I'm going to see it out to the end now, but agree. @BitOutOfPractice
The repetition of the similar dream scenes loses something too.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/09/2023 10:20

@LittleMonks11 my dp is watching it so it’s on while I work. And I think it’s a great story and if they cracked on with it, I’d be glued. Hence my frustration.

LadyEloise1 · 12/09/2023 10:44

I record it and fast forward the "boring" bits.

placemats · 12/09/2023 11:15

Not sure if it's been posted before but this is the poem that Lorna has. 'Do not Stand At My Grave And Weep'.

I think Ruth Wilson's Mayo accent is lovely and soft. Her voice has been subdued for decades and her laugh at the end of the last episode was an explosion of all the frustrations, the pain, the grief and I would hope relief and smithereens of joy.

It's been years since I saw that film, could be.

Jellykat · 12/09/2023 17:27

Ahaa i was right about the Shepherd lot continuing illegally.

Its been a relief to see Lorna being more present in the 'real world' the closer she gets to the truth, and at last, her and Coleman finally working together!

I'm hoping the death certificates are all fake (bar the 3 actual burials)

On a personal note, when i had DS1 they took him off so i could get a bit of sleep, but when i walked into the room to collect him i didnt have a clue which baby was mine! Very common i should imagine...

I'm not finding any of it either slow or boring. The opposite.DH and I are riveted and think the acting -from Ruth Wilson and Frances Tomelty in particular-is outstanding. I had my doubts in episode one but now think it's one ofvthe best -and saddest - dramas in a long while.

the80sweregreat · 12/09/2023 21:26

It is compelling

purpleme12 · 12/09/2023 22:15

I don't think Niamh is shifty.

And I don't think fake Aoife's daughter belongs to Lorna

Stop the clocks was used in Four Weddings. This was used by Lisa in Afterlife if you watched it.

I agree, I'm really baffled by people saying it's slow! I'm gripped as is my teen dd, i can't wait for next Sundays episode.

Ruth Wilson is outstanding as a woman on the edge of madness who gives zero fucks to what anyone thinks of her.

One of the best shows I've seen in ages.

Love Ruth Wilson can't wait for the next episode. Personally I think when people live through extreme horrificness? They also have a strange sense of humour so this drama portrays it perfectly. Most people can't imagine what happened and how they'd feel.

I think you can rent it from other services. Well worth it.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/09/2023 00:21
