Who is the best friend on Motherland?

Just rewatching and musing on what a crap friend Julia is, except towards the end of series 3.

Who do you reckon is the best friend on Motherland, not the best character but the most supportive friend? I'm reckoning on Liz as she's always there when you need her, and the way she took in Julia and her 6 charges on the pilot episode.

You could probably make a case for Kev, as well.

What do the good people of Mumsnet think?

Totally Liz

ChessieFL · 21/07/2023 12:27

I think Anne. She’s always there for people even when they’re all frankly taking the piss.

calmcoco · 21/07/2023 12:28

I think Kev.

Dildoslag · 21/07/2023 12:28

Kevin or Anne although yes Liz would ultimately support someone in a crisis

Dildoslag · 21/07/2023 12:29

Actually on a side note, I rather liked how Amanda hugged Julia in the last episode - it was nice to see that neither were completely cold as ice

BusyLemon · 21/07/2023 13:33

Anne or Liz. As lovely as Kev is, he’s a bit hopeless.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 21/07/2023 13:34

Liz
Kev

HerAvatar · 21/07/2023 13:53

I suppose it depends on what you look for in a friend really, Liz would be the person I would be most drawn to, closely followed by Meg. I can't stand Julia and Amanda doesn't have enough good points to outweigh the bad ones, Anne and Kev are both too doormatty for me. Starting to feel I may have given this too much thought.......

35965a · 21/07/2023 13:56

I think Liz. I would find Kev & Anne too clingy and nice so they’d annoy me!

Sweetashunni · 21/07/2023 14:02

I adore Liz and wish she was my real life mate! She can be a little selfish but in a way that you know where you stand with her and she’s quite open about it, she isn’t shrewd or two faced.

Anne is lovely and motherly and I would trust her to babysit my kids but I can’t imagine wanting to go for a few wines with her Blush she was senior at GSK wasn’t she? So clearly hides her light under a bushel. The scene where Amanda looks through the window and sees her dancing with her family at Christmas just shows that being a kind and family orientated person has paid off for her though.

Kevin - like Anne, lovely but just a wet weekend, although I would probably go for a drink with him if I had nothing better to do. I really felt for him during the weekend away when he just got dumped on and underappreciated by everybody.

Meg - scares the willies out of me. Way too much sass and brains, I would feel constantly paranoid she thought me dim and unchallenging. But the sort of person where exciting things happen when she’s there.

Amanda - would stay friends for the lolz. I don’t find her intimidating like I do Meg, just desperate - and some of her efforts are so transparent I feel like I would get a giggle out of it. Plus she has a lovely house to hang out in. When you meet her mum (Joanna Lumley) you stop thinking she’s a total bitch and just feel deeply sorry for her. The scene where Jonny tells her his new girlfriend is pregnant and the mum takes his side is brilliantly acted by her, and frankly jaw droppingly awful. I really felt for her in that one.

Julia - hate her guts

ive over thought this 😬

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 21/07/2023 14:48

Liz
Kevin

Even better, together!

enemaofthestate · 21/07/2023 14:52

Meg, I like how she immediately steered away from the alpha mums to make friends with Liz/Kev/Julia, and her little comebacks at Amanda

Anne is too desperate to be in with Amanda and a doormat!

Liz and Kev are nice genuine people

Julia is just self absorbed and horrible

I’ve also given this too much thought 😂

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/07/2023 14:54

Meg all the way. Liz too. I wouldn’t get on with Amanda!

AnnaNims · 21/07/2023 14:59

I like Julia best! She’d be a laugh.

(This may be my crush on Anna Maxwell Martin speaking)

Couldn’t stand Anne - such a wet weekend. Not sure about Liz, she doesn’t seem to like anyone.

RitzyMcFitzy · 21/07/2023 16:14

Most of them are decent friends. Julia and Amanda not so much, although Julia comes good when it counts.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 21/07/2023 16:15

Liz. Honest, funny and would offer wine.

ThePoshUns · 21/07/2023 16:30

Liz
But I'd like a night out with Meg, as long as I had a few days off afterwards to recover
Julia is just awful

zanahoria · 23/07/2023 20:21

Liz would be most fun

Anne is the nicest

TortolaParadise · 23/07/2023 23:28
  1. Meg
  2. Anne
  3. Liz
PlumpkinPete · 31/07/2023 13:00

Liz and Kev for me

Liz is just the right side of giving a fuck 😉

I liked the bit where Kevin is really stressed about the teatowels and being late for work but as soon as he realises Liz is upset, he stops rushing around and talks to her about what's wrong. I think I'd find him irritating but he comes through where it counts!

Sharp contrast with Julia ignoring Liz talking about her twatty ex because she wants to get in on the school run lifts.

I think Meg has a fundamentally selfish streak but she is fun at least...

Anne is nice and seems happy but I'd find her constantly letting Amanda belittle her infuriating in real life (but funny on TV)

WestOfWestminster · 31/07/2023 23:24

Liz. Knows what to do in a crisis, you know where you stand with her, funny, would cheer you up, sees people's faults but accepts them for who they are. Yeah, I'll take Liz as my bestie.

NashvilleQueen · 31/07/2023 23:38

The episode when they lose Amanda's son at Halloween Kevin completely leaps into action and is very authoritative.

mommatoone · 05/08/2023 21:26

Liz 💯%. . They are all great characters tho , but Liz is so grounded and seems to be the voice of reason!
