Anyone watching?

I'm up to first adverts and looks good so far

I thought it was all a bit on the nose, and one note, too.

Xmasbaby11 · 25/06/2023 22:43

I didn’t get to the end of the first episode although I was hopeful about it. I found her quite annoying and the characters in the forest not at all convincing.

a shame as I wanted to like it, but just not my thing.

MsPrism · 25/06/2023 22:58

Me too! I would even live in a caravan.

Love it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.

I've watched the first 2 episodes and I'm enjoying it so far.

Do these weird little villages exist where menopausal women can rock up and find themselves through the eyes of Jerome Flynn? I'm up for it if soSmile

meant to quote you!

I agree with you. I'm past menopause so it should have really chimed with me but it was lacking subtlety.

I did enjoy the pagan sort of atmosphere and scenery. She says she originally didn't have the menopause storyline and that makes sense, it feels forcefully tacked on.

MurielThrockmorton · 26/06/2023 07:10

I don't think that I get the storyline though, it doesn't hang together for me, perhaps because it seems so unreal. I want to get it but I find myself looking at my phone. It's like some books where I can see that the quality of the writing is good, and I like the turn of phrase, but the bigger picture just seems pointless! Maybe I need things to be very literal.

Sparklfairy · 26/06/2023 07:16

I saw a clip on FB but haven't watched yet. The clip (50th bday party, then Linda leaves her husband) could have been lifted straight from an MN thread! Is the rest like that?

grimmers44 · 26/06/2023 07:26

Watched episode one last night, it was SO relatable 😂 I'm off to buy a big notebook today.

Spirallingdownwards · 26/06/2023 07:28

I watched it all expecting it to pick up but it didn't. I was disappointed really. Too many cliches.

SupremeCommanderServalan · 26/06/2023 21:28

I heard her being interviewed on the radio at the weekend, so searched it out. I've watched the first two episodes and was laughing out loud at some points - and I never do that!

FreddiesTeeth · 26/06/2023 21:32

It's a bit Menopause By Numbers for me and I can't warm to any of the characters.

MsPrism · 26/06/2023 22:34

I thought that the menopause aspect of the program was less important than her finding her voice and place in society, and her rediscovering herself.
I loved the shots of the Forest of Dean and would really like to go there one day. I first saw it in ‘The singing detective’ and have always been intrigued by it. I wonder if you can stay in a little caravan in the middle of nowhere - eels not necessary!

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/06/2023 20:44

I've just binge watched this and loved it so I hoped there was a thread. Obviously it's something you either get or you don't. I loved the pagan folklore bits and the strange village but was disappointed at the sudden ending - roll on Series 2.

Neerdowell · 27/06/2023 20:52

I also really loved it. One of the best things I've watched in ages. I loved the weirdyness of it

Plasticplantpot · 29/06/2023 16:17

Just watching first episode. Not impressed so far. Husband is a dick and she seems like she’s depressed. She needs a divorce and she’ll be fine!

F0XCUB88 · 29/06/2023 16:19

I really enjoyed it

Mooserp · 04/07/2023 07:29

I enjoyed the first couple of episodes but after that, not so much. Still the occasional laugh but it just became more and more unbelievable.

The whole eel queen thing I found quite cringey.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 04/07/2023 11:01

I assume in Ely they don't put floral headdresses on menstruating teens mind! Grin Wink

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/07/2023 12:18

Probably not there us an eel fight, though, with stuffed (soft toy) eels. There are people around doing all sorts of weird stuff. I quite like it.

chofeshacad · 04/07/2023 14:55

Thanks for the link CaptainMyCaptain. That looks like lots of fun. I had no idea Ely was named after eels (or eeels, as the article had it).

Now I've watched through the series, I can't decide if I liked it (it really hit home on some of the menopause points) or found the lazy trope of not communicating essential information (why not say you've got a family for goodness sake?) supremely annoying. Let alone the cliffhanger ending.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/07/2023 15:06

I think saying she hadn't got a family was easier than explaining why she had come to the forest when she thought she wouldn't be there long and it got harder to tell the truth as it went on. That's my take anyway. The sudden ending was a bit shocking.

DahliaMacNamara · 04/07/2023 15:30

I'm halfway through. I thought that omitting her family details was a way to ensure she was seen on her own terms, rather than as somebody's absent wife/mother. The eels have thrown me a bit, given the location, and the accents wander a bit from person to person, but I'm really enjoying it.

MissBattleaxe · 06/07/2023 10:53

I really enjoyed it. It was so original that I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen next. The way all the characters kind of came together as a community towards the end was lovely. Also, I'll watch Susan Lynch in anything.
