Paramount TV Trial and If Apple TV or Disney+ Any Better?

Nachtvlinder · 04/06/2023 21:09

I've exhausted Netflix and Amazon is not great generally, and I've signed up to the 7-day free trial with Paramount. I'm not sure what to watch on there. So far I've watched the first season of Yellowjackets and The Thing About Pam, and after that I don't know where to go. Tried Rabbit Hole but couldn't get into it; Keifer Sutherland has aged a great deal and I think that's putting me off!!

I have been advised by friends that Apple TV and Disney+ are infinitely better and some might say it's better than Netflix. I'm sharing an account with a family member for Netflix, but as soon as that will be chargeable for a subsequent account, I may not join.

My preferred genres are: thriller; action; foreign and crime. I don't care for romcoms, comedy and other shxx, sorry.

Try Yellowstone on paramount plus. It's the biggest show in the US. There are 2 sequels called 1883 and 1923 too.
It starts a bit slow and confusing but stick with it, I watched with the subtitles on.

PuppyMonkey · 04/06/2023 21:19

You only need Paramount for Yellowstone - and 1883. The other one 1923?? Is awful I think.

I have found myself rather enjoying the new Fatal Attraction though. I

tennissquare · 04/06/2023 21:33

I loved 1923 with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, roll on series 2.

Pemba · 04/06/2023 21:49

There is not an awful lot on there TBH. I got a year at half price last Black Friday, but I have already decided not to renew next time.

I am watching the Fatal Attraction series which is not bad and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Then I plan to watch the second series of Yellowjackets ('saw the first on Now) and maybe try those 1923 and 18-something series. The films on there all seem a bit older, although there's probably some I missed first time around.

I just feel the offerings are a bit sparse compared to the other streaming services.

tennissquare · 04/06/2023 21:52

I get it free via Sky, I wouldn't pay extra for it as you can watch most things in 7 days.

Heartbreaktuna · 04/06/2023 21:58

Apple tv is awful. Nothing on it, and even what's there you still have to pay extra for most things.

Apple TV has got some great shows (Slow Horses, Ted Lasso, For All Mankind, Severance) and some high quality films, but not the enormous volume of Netflix.

Disney+ has got a huge volume of old and new material, too much for me to even start making suggestions, and is well worth trying for a month.

YomAsalYomBasal · 04/06/2023 22:03

The only reason we have paramount plus is for paw patrol Confused There's not much else that looks interesting on there.

Fatal Attraction

I’ve had a couple of free trials of Paramount + but I wouldn’t pay for it. Dexter: New Blood is on there, have you seen it?

Your friends are right, Apple TV and Disney + are much better. I don’t know anyone who’s watched Ted Lasso and didn’t enjoy it.

Nachtvlinder · 05/06/2023 22:38

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've heard of Ted Lasso being a hit, but I can't imagine liking American soccer. I got bored of Dexter after a few series as it became too formulaic. I've started watching Fatal Attraction, but I'm not really getting into very well - the characters just aren't likeable/credible. I'm rinsing Paramount for what I can get for the 7 day trial, so I won't bother renewing this. I asked about which is best for me to try out Apple or Disney as I don't want to waste my efforts and money in getting it. Thanks for the tips on some shows, though.

Disney has a huge amount more than Apple. There are some good shows on Apple, we are enjoying Platonic at the moment and I love Trying but Disney has all of the Star Wars shows like mandalorian, marvel shows like Loki plus things like greys anatomy, station 19 etc… that you used to find on Sky. Disney has all of National Geographic documentaries and Discovery too.

HappiDaze · 05/06/2023 23:23

Disney + is ok so I'm keeping that

Apple TV is ok but I've just cancelled it so have till the end of the month to watch it. I only kept it after yet another free 6 month trial because I wanted to watch the end of Ted Lasso.

I'll pay for it again if something worthwhile comes back on.

HappiDaze · 05/06/2023 23:24

Ted Lasso isn't about American soccer.

HappiDaze · 05/06/2023 23:24

Try Disney +

Ridingthegravytrain · 06/06/2023 07:47

The offer I'm pretty sure is on paramount plus and it's about the making of the godfather film. It's really good (IMO). It's a drama not a documentary

jay55 · 06/06/2023 09:40

Apple has a few really good shows but not enough for me to extend the subscription. At some point I'll get it again to finish Ted Lasso and Trying.

I enjoyed the Flatshare on paramount. But watched at a friends never subscribed.

Disney+ is my fave of the streaming services. Been great to get caught up on Greys, and enjoy all the old American shows, filled in gaps with the marvel films and rewatching all the old Disney live action films.
It also has some really smart new shows. The Fleeshman are in trouble, Single drunk female, Extraordinary etc.

Ted Lasso is set in Richmond. I have never knowingly watched a whole football match (and there isn't too much football in it). It's well written and untaxing.

Saying that, we've just cancelled Apple TV (having paid for a couple of months).

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/06/2023 17:44

What Apple has is superior but the amount of content is too low and they only release 1 episode a week a lot.

I find Paramount so tempting but I can't

PizzazzRoxyStorma · 06/06/2023 18:00

I got Paramount for Yellowjackets but cancelled after. There was simply nothing else on it I fancied watching. Gave Yellowstone a go but tbh it was dumb and dull - I couldn't get into it.

Apple TV is a much better! Bad Sisters, Ted Lasso and Slow Horses Smile

Nachtvlinder · 07/06/2023 00:28

I've just found Halo and in at Ep. 4 so I'll hope to finish that before the end of the trial. Thanks for more of your replies. I think I'll go for Disney+ after.

I thought I would cancel on the last day of the 7-day trial only to find that I've been charged £6.99 for the following month! Now, I'm stuck with it, so will have to find something else to watch. Did enjoy watching Halo, though; lots of action and burly robotic soldiers!

Friend recommended Tulsa King; it's okay, but not really getting into it that much. Stallone is so mimicable with his accent.

Binged on Yellowjackets, but soon tired of it quickly when I started watching S2.

Yellowstone reminded me of another series starring Cissy Spacek from last year or two (can't remember what it was called) about heroin crops, landgrabbing investors - with a very similar storyline.

I couldn't get Ito Yellowstone but I did enjoy 1883 and 1923.

Parentofatween · 12/06/2023 08:09

On Paramount I'd recommend Mayor of Kingston really gritty drama series by same people who made Yellowstone.
