Epic. So much going on!!!

And can't believe we won't see what happens from here 😩😩😩

tribpot · 29/05/2023 21:17

No need to wonder, @chimichangaz . Although inexplicably cut from the finale, you can read my flash-forward final scene in draft form here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/anyone-excited-for-the-final-season-of-succession-spoiler-alert?reply=126048430

(This is in fact my amusing speculation early in May, does not contain spoilers for last night's episode)

TaylorSwiftFan · 29/05/2023 22:21

Wow! The second last episode was a bit disappointing but the finale made up for it.

EachandEveryone · 29/05/2023 22:23

I dodnt want it to end.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 29/05/2023 22:28

Goodness me.

greennotepad · 29/05/2023 22:30

I have a lot of thoughts, here are just some of them. Overall summary- an absolutely perfect ending. Glad it didn’t go down any of the soap opera theories people had like characters dying or Logan being alive etc.

Glad Kendall didn’t come out on top, I don’t like him. Shouting I AM THE ELDEST BOY and denying his wrongdoings like a petulant child, gross. That final scene with Colin in the background, watching over him- perfect.

Shiv doing a u-turn… to side with Tom? Or because if she can’t win, no Roy sibling can? Either way, her and Tom in the car at the end is a perfect ending for them- a lifetime of making one another miserable.

Roman the only sib to experience any growth during the show, I think. Admitting it’s all bullshit, being in love with Gerri at the end, ordering her martini!! Perfect end for him, Emmy for Kieran Culkin please.

Tom winning, and taking Greg with him! Side note- I don’t think Greg would have spilled if he’d known it was Tom.

Loved Tom cleaning house of all the old men, and keeping the women. Thought the fact that he asked Hugo for Karolina on arrival showed that him and Shiv had spoken between her coming into the office and her decision. One of the great things about Succession I think is how stuff that happens off screen moves things along.

All the scenes at Caroline’s. Roman’s garish children’s t-shirt. The conversation right after Shiv finds out she’s been fucked over, where they all talk about the times Logan promised it to them- a conversation they should have had ages ago! The fit for a king kitchen scene- happiness that you just knew meant that devastation was right around the corner.

Absolutely incredible writing, storytelling, and acting. A final episode for the ages. Am going to miss it so much!

XelaM · 29/05/2023 22:30

It's 22:30!

Shiv really couldn't stomach Kendall winning 😂Was him putting his feet on their father's desk the moment she changed her mind? Her whole demeanour changed when she saw that

Lottapianos · 29/05/2023 22:32

Wow. Just fabulous. So funny, so dramatic, so brutal, so sad. Absolutely tremendous acting from everyone. Not for the first time, I think Matthew Macfadyen might just edge it as the most perfect performance, but then, you know, literally everyone else....🤷🏻

Please no spin offs. Let it go. One of my favourite TV shows ever, but it had run its course. Only disappointment was not nearly enough Gerri

XelaM · 29/05/2023 22:33

I actually think Shiv is truly in love with Tom. She was really hurt when he initially turned her down and she changed her mind (a) because she couldn't stomach Kendall and (b) because it was Tom as CEO.

Lottapianos · 29/05/2023 22:35

'Either way, her and Tom in the car at the end is a perfect ending for them- a lifetime of making one another miserable.'

It really was a chilling scene. I guess she realised that he is all she has left so felt she had no choice but to turn to him. The detached way he held out his hand, like a king and his subject. Grim

XelaM · 29/05/2023 22:36

He was brilliant but it's tough competition as to whose performance was best.

Let's not forget Connor! He stayed true to form and actually it looks like he had the best relationship with his dad

I actually think she loves him. She was truly hurt when he turned her down and her speech about them already knowing/saying the worst things about each other was very honest. I think she chose him over her brother because she actually loves him.

XelaM · 29/05/2023 22:38

And also because she just couldn't stand seeing Kendall's smugness 😂

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 29/05/2023 22:41

I'll add more tomorrow but they acted as childishly in the boardroom as they did in their mothers kitchen. They didn't deserve to win. Logan said it best, they aren't serious people.

betsyannegrey · 29/05/2023 22:42

Or maybe she chose Tom because she thought it was her best chance of still being in the game, having influence over him.
She knew she'd have no influence over Kendal, but there was a chance with Tom.

I thought the hand holding, or not, in the back of the car at the end was tragic

burnoutbabe · 29/05/2023 22:42

I was very happy when Tom stuck the dot on Greg's forehead. Everyone else I knew would be fine.

I did think half way through it would be a happy ending for the siblings. (And dinner happy anyway as he knew his dad loved him, the rest didn't). But they screwed it up like they do most things.

EachandEveryone · 29/05/2023 22:42

Doesnt Tom have a touch of the Kevin Spacey about him?

greennotepad · 29/05/2023 22:43

Just remembered one of my fave bits- “new Jess”. So rude!!

tribpot · 29/05/2023 22:43

Brutal, bleak, cruel, heartbreaking, savage, shocking and sad. Just superb.

The stand-out moment for me was when their violence really turned on each other. When Kendall hugged Roman and then deliberately inflicted physical pain on him, opening his stitches, doing what Logan had done to break Roman as a child. So chilling. So perfectly Succession. The violence that followed from this moment was horrifying.

Why did Matsson betray Shiv? Despite what he said to Tom, I think that was just a test of the extremes of his sycophancy. I think he couldn't stand that Shiv was right about how to bury the bad news, and told him straight what to do instead of flattering his ego and winning him round. Matsson is another Logan, unable to deal with women in business.

Why did Shiv go back to Tom? That bit I can't fathom. Does she want protection from her brothers, is she just exhausted from the fight? She looked like a hostage in her final scene, when in fact she has billions and billions of extra dollars at her disposal.

And all so desolating after their one moment of sibling joy (sponsored by Branston pickle), as if they were free of Logan.

Ultimately Logan won; his deal was done. His children were forced to confront the fact that they are dilettantes with no skill for business - Roman perhaps less so than the others but still so broken and erratic.

Poor, dreadful Connor - no happiness even for him, of course, with Willa trying to ship him to another continent so she can indulge her interior design whims on Logan's majestic apartment.

Tom thinks he will get rid of Karl and Frank but they know way too much. They'll still be there in 5 years' time. Tom may well not be.

All so, so well done. What a fantastic, awful, magnificent ending to the show.

WheelsUp · 29/05/2023 22:44

The way she held Tom's hand was really sad. Her hand was on top but misaligned and not really touching his fingers. I guess she realised that she'd turned into her mother and Tom was a better choice than Kendall as she has influence over Tom.

betsyannegrey · 29/05/2023 22:45

I loved the scene in Logan's old house watching the home movie, it was really poignant.

Kieran Culkin was incredible in this last series I think.

Lottapianos · 29/05/2023 22:45

'Logan said it best, they aren't serious people.'

It's true, he absolutely nailed it there!

I don't know if any of these people are actually capable of love. I felt that Shiv's ego more than anything else that was hurt by Tom's dithering, and of course she was feeling vulnerable too. She could hardly bear to touch him in the back of the car

slamfightbrightlight · 29/05/2023 22:47

The video was really poignant, I agree. I’ve only after watching clocked that Kendall deliberately opened Roman’s cut eyebrow - DH said “fucking hell, that was dark” but I didn’t understand what he was talking about at the time! I need to rewatch it all again, there was just oodles of stuff going on

Lottapianos · 29/05/2023 22:50

Am I right in thinking that Matsson's story about sending his frozen blood to Eba was just bullshit? He gave her the story to Shiv to see what she would do with it, as an experiment to see if she would betray him? Eba seemed very much on board with the takeover at the end
