MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #41): A poorly anticipated placeholder thread to contain the Filthy Noonas’ ongoing musings on all things Korean, with Japanese and Chinese sprinkles

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Cobol, you sound like me. I have to confess I really did not know much about Korean history prior to falling down the BTS rabbit howl and then the move to K-drama. I bought the Hallyu book from the V&A show and it was very interesting on the modern history. I quite like some of the historical ones and found myself doing a lot of research during 'Live up to your Name' . The Loup - oh Race sounds like a me kind of thing. Not sure how I am going to justify Disney+ though...but feel I am missing out on DrR3.

😞 FedUp nothing worse than broken sleep. I started hrt about 6 months ago (patches and oral progesterone) - not a miracle cure and I know not for everyone, but my sleep is exponentially better and it has stopped the awful sweats completely for the moment.

I will be going back to my GP for HRT. I can’t survive on 4-5 hours a night long term. I know they’ll ask about caffeine intake so I’m taming my coffee habit before I go.

Dragonrock Funnily enough Live up to Your Name is on the list I'm working on 😁. Lots of you will have seen most of the dramas on my list but I thought it would be fun to put them in chronological order with dates as they give a good overview of the key moments in Korean history. There are 7 in all so I could post one a day for a kind of kdrama history week.

Oh my god - I don't know who here has watched Be Melodramatic but I feel like the title picture and blurb on Netflix did not prepare me for the heartbreak of the first episode. I am in absolute floods of tears.

One of the best shows ever. Stick with it.

AmVa · 06/06/2023 13:27

I will! You can tell something is going to be good if it elicits such a strong reaction in just one episode!!

Kind of funny I watched it instead of the other show I am currently watching because it was in a sad bit and I felt like a lighter watch tonight... 😬😭😭

You have a lot of treats and not so many tears to come AmVa.

FL of A Date with the Future is incorrigible AND a minx and I am here for it. Top notch CDrama-ing so far.

boatyardblues · 06/06/2023 17:31

I second what Pol said. Melo has some very sad bits, but also some very, very funny scenes that have stayed with me - the brand manager’s “oppa!!!” scene, the drunken writer and producer’s night out (“토끼!”) 🤣😂🤣 I also loved the actress and her manager - their scenes are beautifully observed, written and acted. Also special mention for grumpy director, sex-on-legs himself Son Seok Gu. It’s a bumper harvest of good stuff.

migs is it officially confirmed? The last live where he was watching/singing along to a YouTube compilation of 'best Jungkook singing moments' was peak JK, so cute - I loved it 🤣

FedUp and Boaty 👀 - look at those shoulders!! < fans self > I'm generally not a fan of the white linen pants look but I'll make an exception in this case

cobol I'm on board for k drama history week!

Welcome to the madness @hibeat 👋

I loved Melo as well - I definitely cried buckets but laughed a lot as well.... OOOOOPPPPPPAAAAA!!!!!!!!

MigsandTiggs · 06/06/2023 19:35

Loup, nothing official but so hoping it's true!💜Have I been played??

I think I must be the only person who gave up on Melo. Didn't find it funny at all, but perhaps I need to have another tilt at it.🤔

boatyardblues · 06/06/2023 19:58

You definitely need to be in the right mood for Melo. The humour is quite arch and knowing, the leads complex and often fairly unlikeable, but therein lies its genius. It’s sharply written and observed. The characters are flawed human beings with rich hinterlands and interesting. The relationships are complex and nuanced. It’s just so damned rich and layered, I loved it.

Aw. Come with Me by Hye-Seung Nam from the Chicago Typewriter OST just came up on shuffle on my phone. It’s so lovely - the angelic, lilting Czech boys’ choir, the strings, the driving beat. Happy sigh.

A pleasing detail of this CDrama is that a heavily featured rescue labrador is called Windhound. Which would be a suitable name for many of the labradors I have known...
