MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #41): A poorly anticipated placeholder thread to contain the Filthy Noonas’ ongoing musings on all things Korean, with Japanese and Chinese sprinkles

boatyardblues · 15/05/2023 18:12

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Maybe just a haircut. No news yet.

MigsandTiggs · 04/07/2023 11:16

Just had a look at tiktok and if ever there was a case for banning phones at a wedding, this was it. I felt sorry for Suga as guests were rudely filming him even when he wasn't making the speech. Celebrity hell.🙁

Yep - poor guy. So rude of people. Not sure about wedding invite etiquette in SK but possibly acquaintances/colleagues rather than friends family of the couple. Poor form though - I would be embarrassed to be blatantly filming someone like that

Saram13 · 04/07/2023 12:23

Just popping in quickly to say how much I disliked the intrusive photos from the Min wedding too. There is a photo doing the rounds purporting to be Yoongi with his parents (someone sent it to me, I didn't go looking). He has always kept them out of the public eye, but now not any more I guess. He is kind of throwing a warning look in the direction of the photographer so clearly not happy with it. Shame on those people. Celebrities are fair game when 'on duty', but not like this.

Rowdythree · 04/07/2023 12:41

MigsandTiggs · 04/07/2023 11:21

Might be traumatising rowdy, especially as police are also investigating the whereabouts of 2k unregistered children. Life must be so hard for the poor.

http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20230702000162

That's very traumatising Migs like you say, life must be very difficult for the poor. Add into that the stigma of unmarried pregnancies it's not surprising that there are many missing babies 😢

Rowdythree · 04/07/2023 12:43

*And the the sexual violence towards women - I meant to say too

TheLoupGarou · 04/07/2023 14:03

Ach that's a harrowing article. The thought of all those unregistered children too. I always thought the drama depictions of children being abandoned in orphanages must be exaggerated/dramatic licence but I guess it - and worse- is really still happening.

Rowdythree · 04/07/2023 14:58

I think we've discussed the orphanages on the thread previously. If I remember correctly they are a real thing and lots of churches have safe places where people can abandon their babies

Saram13 · 04/07/2023 17:14

Rowdy yes re: places to leave children at churches. See IU's recent film Broker. And parallels with the problematic (past) adoption situation 😔 Terribly sad article. We love this country and its culture but my goodness it tests us sometimes 😕

Dragonrock · 04/07/2023 18:01

Very disturbing, indeed but sadly not a surprise. There were/are a lot of factors at play in S Korea, the after-effects of the Korean War and mixed race children not being accepted, once the routes for international adoption were open the governments decided to use this route to place other children. Some adult adoptees now believe they were not really relinquished but coerced, as happened in the UK/USA/Ireland. It's all got very difficult as the churches and other organisations are in place offering services that are still needed but the arguement develops, should they be working with birth families to deal with the stigma and poverty that means people cannot keep their children? The stigma is real for single mothers, the rubbish that Sayuri had when she appeared in Return of Superman evidences that. Oh dear that all came about a bit longer than I intended but then I am a parent through ICA, so me and my children do have 'skin in the game' as the Americans would say.

TheLoupGarou · 04/07/2023 20:56

Just to segue to something frivolous (sorry!) Dr Romantic 2 is so good 😂 it properly sucked me in. Ahn Hyo-seop as Seo Woo-jin is definitely my favourite fictional (and actually, non fictional as well) doctor 😍. Not sure if I should dive right in to season 3 or wait for a bit....

Rowdythree · 04/07/2023 21:16

Get right in there TheLoup, no reason to wait. Apart from the fact it's not all released on Disney yet. I agree, Seo Woo Jin is 😍🥰 🔥

polkettle · 04/07/2023 21:44

I think that's an unfair review of Broker. It's just got the tonal shifts of any Korean content which the reviewer (who I often disagree with) isn't attuned too. It's not a flawless film but it's definitely worth watching and lots to enjoy.

Saram13 · 04/07/2023 21:47

Pol totally agree, on all counts.

Rowdythree · 04/07/2023 22:03

Pol and Saram, I'm glad to hear it! I'm sure it's a film I'll enjoy. Does anyone know where it's available to watch?

MigsandTiggs · 04/07/2023 22:32

Broker is for rent on Prime, Youtube, Apple tv, Viki and looks like it's coming to Sky in August.

I can’t remember his character’s vibe in DR2 but he’s being a twat towards his junior doctor in DR3. He definitely needs sending for management training to work on his soft skills & learn some basics. Yes, there is a performance management issue with his hoobae but he’s not covering himself in glory either.

Haha!! I'm thinking about whether I would fight in this scenario - depends if there was a handsome and dependable captain of the guard or something to distract me as 2ML..
