Favourite Doctor/Companion from Doctor Who

Just that really. Who was your favourite doctor and companion (don't have to have travelled together) in the new series - 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13? Or if you have a favourite from the old series, I'd love to hear that too because I've never seen it - no idea where to find it!

New series: Donna
Old series: Controversially,Adric. In my defence I was 6 or 7 when I watched those episodes. I didn't realise until the internet was invented that everyone else loathed him.

No mention of Jon Pertwee - he was one of my favourites, along with Tom Baker & his crazy scarves! Sarah Jane was a great companion ( I believe the actress died fairly young). I haven’t watched Dr Who properly for quite a few years but do think Christopher Eccleston should have had longer in the role. Also liked David Tennant.

Oh yes K9

MissTrip82 · 27/03/2023 08:46

I’ve liked then all but especially Eccleston and Capaldi.

Favourite companions were Donna and Bill. I don’t really like it when the doctor has a romantic thing with a companion and I also prefer to have one companion rather than three.

👏 another cheer for Adric. He had a good sort of bumbling energy. I was in pieces at his last episode.

Nothing will ever live up to Tom Baker & Sarah Jane for me, though.

Tenant and Donna for me. Matt Smith is absolutely fantastic but writing went downhill after Series 5, not a fan of Amy or River Song at all. I have high hopes for the new season with RTD back!

So1invictus · 27/03/2023 09:34

New era: Donna
Old: Grew up with Jo and Sarah Jane.
Clara killed Dr Who for me and have never finished watching her period.

Best doctor: David Tennant. I didn't like Matt Smith's doctor, or Amy Pond, but the Tennant/Smith story arcs were the best.

Favourite episodes: Vincent, Donna saving the earth and the Song of the Ood.

I think that was CE's choice. I read somewhere about him initially not being terribly grateful for it relaunching his career and he refused to take part in the earlier anniversaries. He does it now iirc.
I thought he was brilliant, but his attitude towards the hand feeding him less so.

David Tennant and Donna.
Best by far.
Romance in Dr Who is just wrong.

As I understand it, CE left because of "political" differences with the showrunners - possibly due to the exploitative working practices forced by the show's eternal budget and time pressures. It was all a bit of a mess, because obviously he'd been close to RTD beforehand, but they're both huge personalities and not the most emollient.

This summarises an interesting interview.

Eccleston was treated really badly by the producers and felt had to leave because of working conditions. He did nothing wrong. I'm glad he's been able to do some Big Finish and conventions at last, it's good to have him back .

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/03/2023 22:01

David Tennant and Donna. Because they were just mates it worked better.

Couldn't stand Martha and her whining or Clara and her general annoyances.

FadedRed · 28/03/2023 22:11

Peter Davison was my choice of Doctor, but definitely Catherine Tate’s Donna was the best companion.

beguilingeyes · 08/12/2023 14:09

Eccleston has been vindicated a bit more lately with what’s come out about Noel Clarke and John Barrowman. It must’ve affected the working atmosphere.
The first Doctor I remember was Patrick Troughton, who was wonderful..but my doctor growing up was Tom Baker (of course) and Sarah Jane.
Of the re-boot I really liked Eccleston..was a fan of his previously (oh my god, Cracker) and Billie Piper was a revelation when we all thought she was just a pop starlet.
I can’t bear David Tennant and his hyper-active ‘look at me!’ acting. Martha was annoying too. He did have some great stories though, Blink, School Reunion, Silence In The Library, and the two parter with Jessica Hynes.
My favourite of the modern Doctors is Matt Smith. I loved him. He could be an old man in a young man’s body and I loved the Pond’s arc and I bloody adore River Song. Her Christmas Special with Peter Capaldi was glorious too. And oh, that Van Gogh episode.
I couldn’t bear Clara. She was too smug and snarky. No sense of wonder of joy. Just quips. She should’ve gone when her boyfriend died. She ruined most of Capaldi’s run for me, although I loved Bill and thought she should have had more time.
The less said about the Chibnall era the better.
Ultimate companion though, has to be Sarah Jane. School Reunion makes me cry.
All episodes ever are now on iPlayer.
