May please those who liked Montalbano ...

Set in early 1930 Naples has a Matinée idol looking lead character who is broody and with an eye for women, and they for him. (Are all Italian dramas like this?)

Police colleagues are also sort of familiar, but all beautifully shot with elegant clothes and fancy cars.

However the story does have one twist.

Episodes are 2hrs+ so best if you can watch on catch up service if you have on and lose at least 1/2 hour of ads.

Or online at www.channel4.com/programmes/inspector-ricciardi

And given the time period a bit of contrast to Hotel Portofino where English behaviour steers the plot.

Has anyone else watched this?

What did you think of the supernatural aspect?

I'm watching this. I'm up to ep #3. I like it. It's slow, but it's good fun and quite sweet.

Brenna24 · 22/04/2023 00:57

Is it in Italian and subtitled? I am asking because I am learning Italian and it is great to find things that I can actually listen to Italian spoken properly.

duc748 · 22/04/2023 01:09

Yes, it is.

Goodness me! I'd forgotten all about this and was wondering what to watch.

Very beautifully staged if I remember rightly.

And for anyone interested in Italian, there is a new crime drama set in Venice. Lovely to look at and Italian with sub titles.

Loved Montalbano, but didn't like Inspector Ricciardi at all.

Dont Leave Me looks very promising and have watched 2 episodes already.

@Brenna24 There are some very good Italian series on All 4, well worth a look.

Montalbano got quite irritating as it went on. A bit like Vera everyone just kept doing the same thing. Until the very last episode when Montalbano behaved like a total cad and will never be forgiven.

But in fact on watching Ricciardi it was almost like the stock Italian police characters from Montablano.

The only Italian crime drama I have seen where there is no effort to make the main character likeable in Rocco Schiavone https://www.channel4.com/programmes/ice-cold-murders-rocco-schiavone

I did rather like Montalbano (or would have done, if it hadn't gone on and on and on), and this is certainly Montalbano-esque. But in smaller doses it's OK, and it looks so pretty.

The hair distracts me and drives me bonkers re Continuity - to the extent I have to keep restarting because other half found and enjoyed. Absolutely ridiculous, I know ... haven't read the books ... but takes me away from the storyline! I enjoy the supernatural elements only to be sucked in by the greasy Kiss Curl; surely, no self respected Inspector would have affected such a ridiculous bouffant?! Perhaps someone who's au fait with the books knows the reason! Can't believe that it was so fashionable, considering most of his contemporaries are unkempt - perhaps to provide a contract to supposed, suave good looks and grooming!
