I'm so confused re the food. Why did they have to buy food at huge expense but then have to prepare it and cook it? Why couldn't they just buy ingredients elsewhere?
£25 pp for nothing special, and it wasn't even prepared?

Tapenade · 24/02/2023 00:38

There are so many tasks about organising events this series and this is at least the third time they’ve had to cook something. It’s almost like The Apprentice does Masterchef

Triflenot · 24/02/2023 02:08

I’m also really confused about the food being so expensive, then needing to be cooked by the team.

What I thought was ridiculous was the cheap food option in the prison was pure muck, and the mine cheap option was okay. Hardly a shock they didn't chose horrible sausages and barfy beans

Think the prison oringal cheap price was more too.

We were shouting that at the telly. The pie and mash looked good - and was easier to prepare.

The cheap option on the other side looked like pre-Jamie Oliver school dinners. I suppose it could have been sold as a prison menu, but they do better food in prison than that.

WarningToTheCurious · 24/02/2023 09:12

If anyone is planning a trip to London then I can highly recommend the Gunpowder Plot immersive experience - it’s like the Crystal Maze meets Blackadder.

I think the candidates that did the acting part did pretty well, given that they had so little time to prepare. Adding in the contortionist and magician was a bit weird though.

DuckBored · 24/02/2023 12:12

The magician and contortionist made no sense and were adding nothing to the immersion as didn’t fit in at all. It’s like the producers found them and decided to shoehorn them into any old task. The tasks themselves are very samey - seems to be a lot of guest experience ones this year.

Mark seemed okay to me. He realised pretty sharp that he’d misjudged the market completely and did “market research” aka asked people. On real life he could have called the food bookers and got them to go down a much cheaper route and sorted it that way. It’s all very drama filled for no reason except drama. The food is complete odd. Why are they having to pay £20 a head then cook it themselves?! They’d be better taking their clients to an actual restaurant for that! (Not allowed I know but they have stupid rules with food!).

The lips are annoying me no end. Especially Danni in the chair with her face pulling. SirAlan is an arse right? Clearly all his lines are given to him and he doesn’t really say anything relevant. I’m sure when I watched this years ago he was more involved or at least had more relevant things to say. Karen seems to be harsh about everything too. I guess it’s way it’s produced also (eg her sudden “oh here is a message about your drinks order” right when they’d finished discussing). Tim seems nice. More reasonable comments and tones.

I really enjoyed that episode! Hearing the premise I was sure it was the product of the showrunners brainstorming ways to cause maximum possible humiliation for the candidates, but business decisions aside both tours looked fab. It was great to see more of Megan after she initially seemed so quiet - honestly don't think I even registered she was on the show until about episode 3 - and I thought she defended herself really well in the boardroom. She and Simba obviously managed to turn things around with the older ladies who thought they were getting a sedate historical tour, and the guests must genuinely have loved it if no-one asked for a refund after their food was an hour late.

On the other team it was nice to see Marnie getting to be silly and have some fun after the obvious friction between her and the others in previous tasks, and again it was clear the guests were having a great time. Even more impressive that they pulled it all off after one day's prep when none of them are professional performers. And then to cap it all the right candidate got fired, instead of someone decent getting shafted for spurious production reasons! (Bizarre that Mark decided to PM this of all tasks, when he's so obviously not a people person - maybe he just wanted to be really sure he wouldn't be put on the acting team Grin)

In recent years it's felt like they've intentionally picked all the worst candidates and then set them up to fail in every task, and while that is admittedly where most of the entertainment comes from, I think they sometimes forget that for the show to be enjoyable we need some good characters who we're rooting for too. Watching an interchangeable group of irritating dumb people be incompetent week after week is boring - most of the time I feel like I'm watching out of some weird Stockholm syndrome rather than because I actually like the show. I'd love to see more episodes like this that are actually fun instead of vaguely depressing.

(As an aside it really annoys me how they can't win in these tasks - if they pick the expensive options and lose they get patronised about how 'this is a PROFIT task, why wouldn't your priority be keeping the costs down?', and if they pick the cheap options and lose they get an earful about how 'the guests are paying £xxx for this experience and you gave them half a sausage served on a squashed potato, there's no point keeping costs down if it means people are going to ask for refunds'. I was glad Megan pushed back on that because picking the budget food option when she thought they were selling tickets for £180 would have been ridiculous.)

I feel like Sugar has always contradicted himself episode to episode, pretty much from the start
Like the high end food v low end food thing. He'll just criticise them for not doing the opposite of what they did.

You didn't approach people cold to sell tickets why did you expect to sell many?/You approached people cold to sell the tickets why would you expect then to be interested?

You insulted the supplier by offering less 500 than their set price/The supplier would have taken 500 less than their fix price why didn't you offer that

and so on.

But where would they be without Avi's tips and suggestions.

Had he been lead before? Has the power gone to his head?

Every time I see him, I'm just struck by how incredibly stupid he is!

TeachesOfPeaches · 24/02/2023 16:37

Had to fast forward most of this episode, the cringe factor was unbearably high

Gingerkittykat · 24/02/2023 17:00

Megan, Simba and Marnie seem to be the only ones who are promising, the rest are terrible.

I reckon this will be the last season unless they reboot it and have candidates who are picked for their performance rather than their looks.

Fizbosshoes · 24/02/2023 17:09

I thought it was slightly less cringey (apart from Avi) than before.
Agree Mark realised he was pitching it too high and in real life of course would have discussed with the sub team.
I thought it was a nice change that actually both sets of clients seemed pleased/enjoyed the experience. Marnie, Meghan and Simba seemed to do a good job with the character parts. It was nowhere near as cringey as Dubai.

Although it was late, they did take into account dietary requirements (something that had been forgotten in previous series) and the food looked OK. There was no fighting in the kitchen, and actually Dani suggested they should have an idea of time. (But again in real life they would have been able to communicate rather than wait around for instruction)
And same as others why are they essentially paying top dollar for prepared meals when actually they are just getting ingredients? The burgers and chips meal could probably be done for more like £4/head rather than £25 or whatever they paid. And yes the budget meal looked awful.

billysboy · 24/02/2023 18:50

The producers and editors of this show need to sit on the wall and have a chat with themselves !!
so much of it is how they are set up and candidates projected everything is stacked against them from the start , the production team have a lot to answer for
Tom Alan needs to be told the after show is not about him, how lovely to see Linda on there and Carina last night
Carina would wipe the floor with this lot this year from what we are being shown

greenacrylicpaint · 24/02/2023 19:28

burn ointment

that's what the women's lips remind me of.

GLADragss · 24/02/2023 19:59

Without knowing their business plans, I think Megan or Marnie may win as they seem the most capable. Both managed to make their own performances shine whilst their project managers struggled.

DuckBored · 24/02/2023 20:55

Watching your fired for first time. Is it always so harsh to the fired candidate!?!? it’s only part way and it feels like they are ripping Mark apart and he’s having to sit and be polite to them 😯

The make panel guest (didn’t catch their name) had mentioned the food thing also saying they could get it cheaper in supermarket! So true.

Every time I see him, I'm just struck by how incredibly stupid he is!

I couldn't stop laughing when he was talking about being whipped: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it."

He's useless but the most entertaining of them this year!

GLADragss · 24/02/2023 22:53

Avi is just there for entertainment value. I can’t see LS confidently being seen with him as his business partner. He’s too much of a wildcard

I would love Avi to get through to the interviews, though!

And talking about interviews, I think there are only 2 more episodes to go before that and don’t they usually have 5 people? There are 8 left so does that mean there must be one double firing this series?

Maireas · 25/02/2023 08:05

I can only see Piella now.
Rodent man was the right one to go.

It was a bit unfair re. the budget versus the premium meal. The 'fidget pie' as the budget option was a very reasonable meal to serve the guests. The plastic prison food tray with a couple of sausages or whatever it was did not look like a reasonable option, so the prison team didn't really have a choice about going for the premium option.

Tapenade · 25/02/2023 09:30

When did the sub-teams stop being allowed to communicate with each other on tasks? I’m sure in earlier series they were always on the phone when the PM changed their minds - so definitely Mark’s rethink on ticket prices would have been passed on.

DahliaMacNamara · 25/02/2023 10:21

I'm sure they used to speak to one another as well. Cutting off communication probably came from the brain that apparently dreamed up the notion that Google doesn't exist, so phones can't be used to find out information either.

greenacrylicpaint · 25/02/2023 10:31

I read somewhere (possibly from a previous contestant) that they are not allowed to use search websites and that phone contact between subteams is limited.

which explains a lot.
