P VALLEY …

Is anyone else watching this?

Set in a Mississippi pole dancing club. It really didn’t look like my kind of thing until I noticed it was created and written by Katori Hall (genius American playwright; a mixture of Michaela Coel and Sally Wainwright).

Season 1 is tremendous. Season 2 … Frankly some of the most gobsmacking TV I’ve ever seen. (Unashamedly at its best when at its most theatrical.)

I know I’m late to this - no other thread visible!

I haven't heard of it, what channel or streaming service is it?

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 04/02/2023 16:33

Oh, sorry - stupid me! I’m streaming it on Prime Video. Some reviews mention StarzPlay; don’t know if that still pertains.

Of you find it, don’t be put off - it takes a bit of getting used to before you can settle into the extraordinary writing and performances.

It's an incredible show, I've watched all of it

The dancing is amazing and the setting amidst the poverty, the drugs, the church, the politics - it's just an amazing show

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 04/02/2023 17:03

Completely! I’m on S2, Ep 5 and totally awestruck.

Oh my - the pre-credits montage at the start of S2, Ep 7 is just - wow …

And the toddler posing is just the most affecting thing I’ve ever seen on an opening credits sequence.

Trying to pace myself so I’ll still have some of this left to watch after the Happy Valley finale …

I've never heard of this.

But now I need to watch it.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 05/02/2023 16:14

S2 just grows more and more majestic.

Do seek it out @Emotionalsupportviper - not just because it’ll cushion the HV comedown. It’s another show where the writer(s) really gets to flex their muscles.

I LOVE P Valley (and your username)

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 06/02/2023 08:14

Grin Thanks!

Don't know if anyone else has found, as I currently am, that the rhythm of Katori Hall’s dialogue gets into your head and turns you into a pseudo-Mississippi resident. My interior monologue has a whole new bounce and musicality and poetry to it now.

The migration of playwrights to screen drama is kind of fascinating. Countless examples in the UK - but at the moment, in relation to Katori Hall, I’m thinking particularly of Lucy Prebble > Succession. (Obviously neither is the only writer involved in the shows.)

Without spoilering, though - a few episodes in S2 are written by other people, and I’m missing the loving gentleness of earlier episodes. Something happens that looks dangerously like a cliché to me. Hoping they’re not going to ruin it, right at the end.

(Though I read that S3 has been approved.)

What do you love about it @RumNotRun ?

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 08/02/2023 19:38

Oh dear - I’m talking to myself.Grin

Finished S2 now - that did not end the way I expected. And now we have to wait for S3 for resolution …

I love the dancing, halfway through the first series I was googling pole dancing lessons and how to fit a pole in my house 😁

I know what you mean about the way they talk/the dialogue. I love the music too, I've got some of it on my Spotify playlist. The rapper (I've forgotten all the names as it's been a while since I watched it) really annoyed me at first, but by the end of season 2, he had become one of my favourites. Similarly, I really liked the main character woman at first, but can't stand her now (the woman we first met who fled the abusive guy).

I shocked my cats a few times by getting up and dancing in a few episodes. Sadly being an overweight white woman with the rhythm of a dead frog means that I look nothing like as cool as the dancers on P Valley 🤣

Owing to post-viral exhaustion I’ve watched a lot of streamed TV lately - Better, Carnival Row, Picard, The Gold, The Last of Us - all more or less absorbing in the moment. But this morning I put on the P-Valley album on Spotify and was immediately transfixed with worry for some of the characters. It’s such a powerful story, and some people were left in brutal misery - I can’t bear to think of them left like that until the next season starts …
