I have just realised.

And my children have grown with this. I wonder how TV will be for them in the future?

That’s how I’ve watched TV for about 15 years. My kids are 18-22 and they’ve no idea there are other ways of watching tv.

Shesasuperfreak · 04/02/2023 07:59

I enjoy this way but I notice it fuels instant gratification.

For example, if we visit my in-laws with regular free view, my children will look for a long time instead of just putting a program on. They can get bored very quick.

I also think it stops you from discovering something that you would never watch.

On the other hand. Tv doesn't 'end' anymore. So you can watch anytime.

I was just wondering the other day of my 16 year old son realises there are schedules programmes that you can watch when they are on - I can’t remember the last time he watched regular tv!
I don’t know if the instant gratification is a good thing or not - I probably learned a lot when young from watching programmes I didn’t really like just because there was no alternative! However I wouldn’t want to go back to that because I also nowadays watch very few regular programmes.

My DDs don’t watch ANYTHING on telly. In fact, I’m the only one in the house who tends to sit in the living room in the evening with the big telly. DP likes to go off and watch YouTube stuff about space and DIY.Grin

We occasionally sit together and watch a film (Netflix or Prime) on the big telly. That’s it.

Happy Valley is the only thing I have watched for ages as a normal broadcast show. I even gave up on Strictly this last time . Wondering how much longer I can justify having a TV licence tbf.

Shesasuperfreak · 04/02/2023 08:25

Yeah me too with the TV licence, I used to love The Apprentice but that's been shit for me for the past few years so I stopped. My children like Tracey Beaker and sometimes they have good films on there but thats it!

Surely that's the norm nowadays. My mother is 78 and even she doesn't watch regular TV. She just watched that Victoria Wood Housewife 49 or whatever it's called on YouTube and paid for it last week because it wasn't on her Netflix or whatever else she's got.

bluevalet · 04/02/2023 08:46

Same here! I gradually phased out BBC IPlayer and hey presto, I'm now licence-free. Was resenting paying £13 a month for something I only used occasionally. I logged myself out of iplayer on the telly as a reminder and I've never missed it.

purpledalmation · 04/02/2023 09:06

Can't remember last time 9 yo looked at tv He just watches you tube on iPad.

User17649787 · 04/02/2023 15:55

I watch some series as normal broadcast as there is no other choice unless you watch it later and risk a spoiler, at the moment they are Happy Valley, Call the midwife and The Catch, everything else is streamed or watch through catch up on Sky, Sky is particularly handy to watch as catch up as it kindly gets rid of the adverts. I like now that you can download Eastenders earlier in the day and don't have to watch at 7:30pm

User17649787 · 04/02/2023 16:01

I still get the licence as I watch loads of BBC series, I did ditch Netflix though as I hadn't found anything to watch on that since The Crown, if something decent comes on it I will just subscribe for a month so that saved me £10.99 a month as I don't get the cheaper Netflix as the picture quality is bad. I have all the other streaming channels and Sky packages

Oncemoreforluck · 04/02/2023 16:18

Well, I’m the opposite to you all then 😀. We only watch ‘normal’ tv.
Occasionally pull something up on iplayer, even less often on ITV Hub.
We record everything and watch back when we want to, so we can fast forward through the adverts.

I begrudge having to pay extra to watch rubbish. TV is on for around two hours in an evening, so we can usually find something to watch.

I am getting tempted by Netflix now, so may eventually pay out for this.

How do you get your news and current affairs?

Chicagopd · 04/02/2023 17:07

I haven't had live TV for 10 years, get my news and current affairs from newspapers online, podcasts etc

I read newspapers online or look at Google News. But tbh news is everywhere - all over the internet. It’s hard to avoid.

FenghuangHoyan · 04/02/2023 17:14

I'm the same. I don't watch live TV at all. I haven't for years and got rid of my TV licence as a consequence. I recently got a licence again for Christmas and have found there's just a load of garbage on live TV these days and tons of adverts. I'm cancelling the licence again.

Floralnomad · 04/02/2023 17:15

Surely you or your kids watch live sport on the TV - that’s probably the only time I watch actual programmed TV

PhotoDad · 04/02/2023 17:17

No live TV here for... years. When my DS was learning about "telling the time" some 10 years ago, the worksheet asked, "What time is your favourite TV programme?" and he was genuinely confused!

Have you heard of the concept of people not liking sport? Grin

I’ve yet to meet a family where everyone hates every sport that exists , although granted I’ve not met everybody

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/02/2023 17:21

Only for live events, like for eg the Queen’s funeral or the World Cup, etc. Occasionally Channel 4 news. (We don’t like the BBC).

Otherwise no. Haven’t done for years.

HELLO! Grin

Shesasuperfreak · 04/02/2023 17:23

We did watch the world cup on iplayer or itv player but not normal TV.

Right now they're watching Dantdm on the big TV in the sitting room whilst I'm on my phone.

If push came to shove I really think we could live off youtube, it has full episodes of shows.

Hello 👋

Hello, too! We don't actually hate all sports... just the ones that are shown on TV.

I can absolutely assure you we are here and probably outnumber the sports fans.
