I have just realised.

And my children have grown with this. I wonder how TV will be for them in the future?

I don’t understand people who rely on newspapers and the internet for their news. I know they’ll claim terrestrial TV news is ‘biased’ but it’s highly regulated.
i can’t imagine watching YouTube for my entertainment either. That would feel so random. The BBC, ITV etc try to curate decent programming and often pop up with something that takes me by surprise. I can’t imagine not having that.

I use the BbC for news, but I don’t sit down and watch it at 10pm

No one does, other than some over 60s.

I still watch a lot of BBC (docs, news, natural history, some drama, BBC 6 music, Radio 4 and some radio 2, plus lots of the website) so still pay the license fee.

Are all the people on the TV threads on here over 60, who are watching Happy Valley, the Masked Singer, Call the Midwife

User17649787 · 04/02/2023 18:49

You can see what is popular by looking at the threads in Telly Addicts, The Apprentice has a lot of posts also, I wonder if they are all over 60...

I’ve yet to meet a family where everyone hates every sport that exists , although granted I’ve not met everybody

All five of us here, no sport fans!

Actually DS3 is suspiciously happy with a ball. Better train that out of him ASAP Grin

i thought most people, even those who hate football etc, enjoy the Olympics?

Can't say I've ever watched the Olympics either! Maybe I'm unusual.

User17649787 · 04/02/2023 19:00

I'm not interested in sports at all, DH watches it on the upstairs TV, usually cycling and snooker, it's not something that is on the main TV unless I'm out

TwoMonthsOff · 04/02/2023 19:03

Don’t forget people….if you don’t watch live TV or anything on the BBC IPlayer you can be legitimately Licence Free. The Licence is £159 pa

I don't watch any sport, ever.

I tend to watch TV on catch up, or things on streaming services. I (very precisely!) watch TV between about 7 pm and 8.30 pm, so have to watch The Apprentice or Happy Valley on catch up. In the past I'd have recorded it.

Fuck no

TrinnySmith · 04/02/2023 19:30

Just watched Scotland beat England live in the 6nations rugby - Brill!

user1465390476 · 04/02/2023 19:45

I didn’t realise so many people hate sport. I thought the Olympics were a global event most people had at the very least a passing interest in. I also couldn’t imagine not having a football team.

@Mars27
mostly it goes on salaries

and that is just the ‘talent’ don’t forget all the executives and their non contributory pension scheme

That is just a salary list. Unless you work in the payroll department you cannot say with 100% certainty that most of it goes to salaries, or how the license fee money is distributed, I'm afraid.

Some of it goes to salaries, not forgetting the majority of people who work there are not "talent" or directors.

But some people are hell bent on the "BBC is evil agenda", there's no reasoning with them

TwoMonthsOff · 04/02/2023 20:51

@Mars27
Yes hard to see how they are managing to spunk 5 billion pa

but maybe look it the size of the pension pots of Tony hall and Alan yentob….lm talking millions here …all paid for by the gullible 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑public

is Gary Lineker really worth that salary ? Of course not

personally I really don’t care tbh as they don’t get a penny out of me or ever will

kwaziseyepatch · 04/02/2023 20:54

@Mars27
I'm with you, I think the BBC is fab (and I'm 30s not over 60). I love the dramas, radio, news. I don't watch much live tv but really appreciate there not being any adverts when I do. CBeebies is decent for kids and they also do good magazines. I used to love C4 but stopped as I couldn't bear how all4 used to keep crashing during episodes and I'd have to watch the adverts again. Stopped watching bake off purely because of that.

I find it so depressing to hear people only watch YouTube/streaming services.

The output of BBC is second to none. Most of their drama series are fantastic such as Happy Valley and Line of Duty. Even things like Call the Midwife which is something that I don't watch but I recognise it has its public and is of the highest quality. CBeebies is made of pure love and educational content. I could praise every single channel and not to mention the radio channels and news. Remember during lockdown when everyone was going on the Bitesize website? I think British people really don't value the quality of state TV they have. I grew up abroad in different countries and I can honestly say that there's no other country in the world that has a state broadcaster on the same level as the BBC.

Also, people forget that the license fee is not the equivalent of a streaming service fee, it goes to fund all of the above and more, pretty much the same of paying your taxes to fund public services (because it is a public service, in fact). It's for everyone, not just you.

I’ve watched all of those TV shows via streaming services.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 04/02/2023 21:01

If we really want to watch something sporty on TV there’s generally a streaming service where we can watch it. My kids have F1TV for example.

We also watch a fair amount of sports in person but we’re in the US and I think there is probably more here to watch than in the UK. I went to a fantastic high school basketball game yesterday and a college basketball game last weekend.

user1465390476 · 04/02/2023 21:01

@ZZTopGuitarSolo do you have a TV licence?

@ZZTopGuitarSolo do you have a TV licence?

I do not. I consume BBC content through streaming services that have paid for it, so I pay that way.

user1465390476 · 04/02/2023 21:09

@ZZTopGuitarSolo oh. Ok. Is that content not quite old?

@ZZTopGuitarSolo oh. Ok. Is that content not quite old?

No not particularly. It depends what show it is though.

FenghuangHoyan · 04/02/2023 21:15

Mars27 · 04/02/2023 18:24

@FenghuangHoyan I'm afraid it absolutely is not the same as a streaming service fee. You've always had to pay the license fee even before there was the IPlayer. And you can go to court for not paying it, so it is a public duty/obligation. And the BBC has something for everyone, it is not a personal streaming service so I don't get the mentality "I don't like it, I'm not paying for it". I don't watch snooker or Homes Under the Hammer and I'm happy to pay a license fee that goes towards that. It's a community mentality, really. Even if I didn't watched or listened any of it I'd be happy to pay because I recognise it's something for everyone, not just for me

I recognise I'm in a minority here but like I said, you don't know how you've got here.

You do not have to pay the TV licence. You only have to pay it if you watch live TV or iPlayer. It's not a duty or obligation and I've not had a TV licence for years because there isn't something for everyone because personally there's nothing on it that I think warrants the licence fee. You can only go to court if you contribute watching it without paying and are caught and refuse to pay.

I'm glad for you that you're fortunate enough to feel that you can pay for something that's for everyone and not just you, but I'm not in that lucky situation. I have to be very careful with money and I don't have money to spend on things I don't use.

Simulacra · 04/02/2023 21:16

I haven’t watched a “channel” for about a decade. Sky/Virgin prices are a joke, Freeview isn’t an option as a renter due to needing permission for an aerial etc.

I don’t watch YouTube/TikTok though I do have Prime, Netflix and Disney. I’ve found my TV consumption slowly dwindled for a while and over the last year it’s dramatically dropped. I’d rather listen to Podcasts/Audible and knit. (I’m late 30s…)
