BBC 2 at 9pm, just in case anyone didn't realise 🙂

Love it Bore. This must happen in detectorworld. You should pitch it! Smile

But how does one 'pitch' Hun, and to whom?

If anyone knows about these things, feel free to grab my idea and run with it!

(Musing on a dream sequence, in which the cast are all vikings/Saxons)

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 28/12/2022 13:39

Well, I'm not sure how this has bypassed me for the last eight years... but I've just had a great couple of days binge watching the three series and two specials!

Loved the subtleness of the intelligent and gently humourous writing, the nature clips woven in and of course the soundtrack.

Better late than never I guess!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/12/2022 13:40

Loved to see Sheilas Lemonade making a guest appearance!

LouisCatorze · 28/12/2022 13:42

Sophie Thompson's 'Sheila' is a masterclass in character acting.

PriamFarrl · 28/12/2022 14:20

I agree that they were treating Stan as much younger. Especially given that the second part was a year later when he was 8.

I love Terry and Sheila. They remind me of so many of of parents friends.

CurrentHun · 28/12/2022 14:26

Bore dunno! That was me fancying myself as an Alan Partidge-style cigar- chewing TV exec.
IRL i guess you Tweet Mackenzie Crook and then take it from there.

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/12/2022 14:27

You do it Hun!

CurrentHun · 28/12/2022 15:21

I’m much too much of a delicate flower to be on that cesspool Bore. Grin

WarningToTheCurious · 28/12/2022 16:36

The Unthanks singing Magpie was a particular highlight.

PriamFarrl · 28/12/2022 19:17

I also loved the whole ‘ketchup in the fridge’ debate. Just right for that kind of person.

BeingHeldAtHunPoint · 28/12/2022 20:11

I expected Lance to be fridge though @PriamFarrl and for the more laid back Andy to be cupboard.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 28/12/2022 20:26

It’s the subtlety of the writing that I love so much. Like when the expert at the press conference said something about the mistaken belief that the Holy Grail would be a gold, bejewelled goblet - he pretty much described what Stanley had made. Then it cracked to reveal a simple clay pot. Sublime.

It wasn’t subtle though Confused. They literally showed us it’s route from the Last Supper to the shelf!

It says to keep it in the fridge on the bottle.

I’m in your team @CaptainMyCaptain

I mean before they showed us.

PriamFarrl · 28/12/2022 21:27

I keep it in the fridge, because it says on the bottle to keep it in the fridge. And mine is Stokes ketchup which is made in Rendlesham where they filmed some of it.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 28/12/2022 21:49

I mean before they showed us.

Ah, I see. I beg your pardon.

Bogglebrain · 28/12/2022 22:07

I’m rewatching it and still feel disappointed. I think they should have stopped at series 3, which was perfect.

QuaterMiss · 28/12/2022 22:38

Ah - we probably ought to expect Lance to kick against Authority!

It’s so funny - Andy likes to believe he’s a lone wolf intellectual - but he doesn’t have the resilience for that kind of life so is constantly too scared to take flight; he’d be much happier in the warm embrace of a corporate institution. Lance, on the other hand, does a mostly mindless job that leaves his brain free for all sorts of whoops and somersaults. He’s the one demolishing accepted History and engaging independently with the preservation of foodstuffs.

Hmmm...I keep on hearing about this programme, so I've started watching it from the start on iplayer. I mean, it's OK, funny in places, but there's something I don't like about it which I can't quite put my finger on. The characters are a bit "not nice" with each other, in a way that doesn't sit well with the setting, if that makes sense? No, let me try and explain: There's this nice folky guitar music and all these establishing camera shots with nice fields and insects pollinating flowers, which kind of makes you think it's going to be very gentle and rural. Kind of "warm" in its tone? But somehow in the script there's this kind of edginess, there's this kind of Ricky Gervais - type "sneery" thing going on in some of the dialogue, although its very subtle, but it puts me off. Yeah, it's almost as if Gervais was the script editor? I can almost picture him going "no, MacKenzie, this scene is too tender and warm, you need to have a biting comment just there, to undermine that warmth and tell the viewer that those feelings are stupid".
Oh no, everyone is going to leap down my throat for saying this! I hope someone kind of understands what I mean.

That's not how I see it. What you would like to see would be too sweet and slushy for me. Relating to the nature shots - nature itself is not sweet and kind. Beautiful but also cruel. The relationship between Lance and Andy has it's ups and downs. Sheila, always smiling, has experienced sadness, every character has their story making them what they are.

I’ve just read on the Detectorists FB group that Tatterdown Cottage was restored to its full glory and that the owners had a donation “from a Detectorists actor” towards its restoration after the rl fire. Hang on a minute, I seem to have developed Itchy Eyes…..

CoffeeBoy · 29/12/2022 17:18

The gofundme raised under 5k with the biggest donation being 1k. Not sure whether they had insurance as well.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 29/12/2022 18:01

I agree that the female characters are not well-rounded. Ok, the two main characters are male (quelle surprise) but I think the argument about comparing the supporting cast was well-made.

I'm going to pretend that the programme ended with series 3 and this was just a nightmare that Andy had.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 31/12/2022 09:47

Detectorists has been oddly entwined in my Christmas this year. I hadn't watched it before (at least, I'd started but couldn't quite get into it) but my parents came to visit for Christmas and they love it, so in readiness for the Christmas special we started to binge watch it. I loved it this time!

But, it's become a comfort blanket because my mum ended up being hospitalised on Christmas Eve and myself and my dad continued to binge watch on between visiting hours.

Although my mum is not out of the woods yet, I'll forever appreciate the gentle bittersweet humour and "time passing" feel of the series.
