Yes, agree that the wrap ups of some of the storylines are ridiculously positive. Apple pie TV a bit like The Waltons used to be?

Catspyjamas17 · 15/02/2023 11:50

Yes, a series going back further would be great. And I love the idea of a detective spin off with Nurse Crane and Miss Higgins.

I like the Turners too, Laura Main comes from my hometown, she was in the pantomime here in 2021 and she was brilliant!

Her school drama teacher is a friend of mine too.

Though my favourite was Valerie, I miss her.

Catspyjamas17 · 15/02/2023 12:04

I'd also like a spin off from Foyle's War with Sam Stewart set in the 1960s. Her politician husband dies in mysterious circumstances, Foyle himself has passed away and Sam has to investigate her husband's death, treading on the toes of corrupt police and politicians. Then sets up a detective agency after the success of her first case, and to support herself and her child, now a teenager. She bumps into Andrew Foyle, now divorced, and they have a will they/won't they friendship/relationship.

I've just rewatched some of the 1st series and like others have said, it feels a lot more realistic. In episode 2, Jenny helps a young pregnant prostitute called Mary; her story is in the book and it's absolutely harrowing. A couple of the conversations Jenny has with a priest who also helps out are very different from the "Nonnatus House saves the day, we're so knowledgeable about everything" storylines in the recent series.

First, the priest comments to Jenny that it must all be a shock to her and she breezily says she works in the East End and knows about poverty. The priest replies "I don't think you do nurse. Poverty isn't just about poor housing and a lack of food, it's never having been loved or even respected." Jenny then acknowledges that she is naive.

Later on, she shouts at the priest after seeing the awful state Mary is in after her baby has been taken from her. He shouts back that she isn't the only one who's angry. But with a baby, no family and no education, how can Mary support herself other than by returning to prostitution. It's a case of which child do they save - Mary or her baby - and sadly there are no happy endings.

If they included her story now, you'd get Dr Smug mansplaining that prostitution isn't great, telling the world-weary priest he's wrong and then finding Mary a convenient job by the sea where she can live in with her baby.

Yes, this is my feeling exactly. In the early series there was a lot more “sometimes things are terrible and you can’t always fix them” whereas nowadays there’s nearly always some wonderful solution to everyone’s troubles.

Also whatever happened to poor Cynthia? She got sent away to a mental institution and after a few episodes never mentioned again- surely she’s not still there?! Wouldn’t Trixie or Sister Julienne want to find out how she’s going?

Catspyjamas17 · 15/02/2023 14:48

They did go and visit her but I can't remember what happened after that.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/02/2023 15:06

Cynthia went to the place that Dr Smug went too after his breakdown, and was never heard from again. She also demoted her self back to postulant so she could start again. Though she must have had the shortest discernment, postulancy and noviciate ever.

The idea of a prequel makes more sense to me.

Yay! Welcome to Turner Corner.

Valerie fans also welcome, she was awesome.

@PaperwhiteTheGhost

Thankyou!

Happy to join Turner corner Smile

I thought Valerie was brilliant, kind and compassionate and understood the hardships of the East End and poverty.

Phyllis is my favourite now

I've said this before... but maybe they need to conclude the current story arc, then go back in time pre Jennifer Worth. Either during WW2 or post war at the creation of the NHS.

I think that would be a really great show, with younger version of some of the sisters.

But I fear they would make the same mistakes as the more recent series. I think the change in writing is across a lot of shows, no one seems to be able to show the past as it was, in a respectful way. It's not just CTMW.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/02/2023 18:01

I liked Valerie too.

It is a good idea.

I remember the first Christmas that EastEnders was on Air and they done a throw back episode called Civvy Street.. Mainly centred around a young Dot, Ethel and Lou. It was pretty good and original at the Time.

AnImaginaryCat · 15/02/2023 21:48

I could watch a back in time series, especially a Nurse Crane centric one.

It has got a bit ridiculous. Nothing realistic about it anymore. Lots inaccurate from the plots to the script that simply need a fact check (like an Irish person using the word "poorly").

I still like it though, I just think why I like it was changed. It amuses me now for all the daftness.

LavenderHillMob · 15/02/2023 21:57

I think in the book Jenny kept in touch with her, although she continued to have fragile mental health.

Tigresswoods · 15/02/2023 22:05

What is actually wrong with Matthew the posh husband to be? He's just weird.

I think there's a possibility it's supposed to be a portrayal of grief.

Please pitch this to the TVs god's - I'd watch.

Grief I think. The weight of the world on his shoulders while Trixie witters on about trivia. She is far more annoying.

Bubbylana · 16/02/2023 08:22

I used to watch CTMW on a monday morning on the coach to work and it always made me cry. Sometimes I feel sad but not tearful when I watch it now. I started binge watching The Royal it was 20 years ago when it was first on and a few of the òlder actors are sadly gone now. I love it though even though its a bit dated. I did cry when an older couple had a baby and it was still born and the nun sister dunked it in cold water and it revived I cried then. I wonder if that happened in Real Life.

LouisCatorze · 16/02/2023 09:36

Heidi Thomas is 60 though so you'd have thought that things could be more authentic, as she was alive in the 1960s. Young yes, but likely would have recall of how life was then.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/02/2023 09:53

I only watched yesterday but don't mind spoilers so I've read the thread. Some people were saying there are always happy endings now but I don't think there was a particularly happy ending for the homeless family. They were in separate hostels far apart from each other.

I remember in one of the early series still based on the book. There was a family of 8 who couldn't be rehoused in one of the New Towns because there weren't any big enough houses so they had to stay living in squalor and the woman either tried to kill the baby at birth or cause herself a very late abortion. In the TV version there was a happy ending but the book version was far more grim.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/02/2023 09:54

So, I meant to say, they were sugar coating it a bit even then.
