Anyone watching? Dr smug unfortunately appears fully recovered from the train crash.

Did anyone else think the ages of the woman with hepatitis and her husband didn't add up? The returning son looked no older than 20 and she said to her husband she couldn't keep him because she was too young but she looked mid 40s in this episode. Surely if she was an unwed teen mother back then she would only be in her mid 30s now? Her husband said he was 'just a lad' when he met her but he looked at least 50.

Warning: There seems to be a photo in the online press of the wedding which may contain spoilers.

TrashyPanda · 13/02/2023 18:05

ive been seeing photos for months now.

not a spoiler - but stop reading now if you might not want to read about any element of the wedding

Trixie’s headdress and veil combo reminds me of I Dream of Jeannie.

@PaperwhiteTheGhost They're my favourites too, always have been. I just don't bother defending them on here because I'd be fighting a losing battle!

Agreed. We'll just sit quietly in team Turner corner being soothed by their loveliness and Sheilagh's homemade shortbread.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/02/2023 18:28

I didn't think the husbands reaction to the unknown son was particularly believable. That's a huge secret to keep in a supposedly happy marriage..

I noticed that too. Also the husband just seemed to happily accept the situation . Bringing a drug addict into the home with younger children and a baby who no one knew about ?

Clawdy · 13/02/2023 20:02

Yes, his reaction was very placid, sort of "Oh, that's fine, love, no worries!" and a big hug!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/02/2023 20:25

I thought the husbands reaction was completely unbelievable, he would have quite understandably been upset that his wife had been lying to him for twenty plus years. He would have been mortified that this would have looked bad (been a scandal) and I'm certain would not have welcomed a drug addict into the family home.

I'm not sure sugar coating historical issues like illegitimacy, racism, sexism etc does anyone any favours. We're hardly a country of raging liberals now let alone 50 years ago 🫤

After reading and enjoying this whole thread, I signed up only to voice my support for the Turner team. I love them, too. And Sister MJ! I actually don't think I really dislike any of the characters...

TennisWithDeborah · 13/02/2023 21:36

Yes, the couple with the newborn were far too old to be portraying characters aged about 40.

And the husband would have been devastated. The normal reaction would have been either anger and shock, or maybe, “I love you but I need some time to come to terms with this”. Unless we are supposed to think that he’d had an awareness all along but was waiting for her to feel ready to divulge…. I suppose that as Sister MJ was present at the birth, we can assume it happened in Poplar, so gossip may have spread and reached his ears at the time or shortly after.

I too like all the characters. But I agree that the writers put a right-on, 21st century spin on things. If I were a black or Asian person who’d lived in 1960s UK, or a single mother from that era, I think I’d feel a bit resentful about my true experiences being denied.

The thing they get really right in this show, is the middle-class white men hectoring people and generally running things. Those fellas from the health board being perfect examples.

But it’s good to see Violet on the council, and that female cardiologist recently, and the female police sergeant in the last series. Because women were starting to emerge professionally at that time.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/02/2023 22:06

I haven't watched this episode yet but people in their 30s were considered practucally middle aged in the 1960s. Everyone looked older than the equivalent age would look now.

PriamFarrl · 13/02/2023 22:41

I agree that the husband was very quick to welcome this random young man into the family. However I guess they needed to tidy it up inside one episode.

Yes! Come to Turner Corner. Sister MJ is welcome too.

I also like all of the characters, except now I hate Lucille for mugging Cyril off (but I do think it’s massively out of character and I assume it’s because the actress couldn’t do the whole series). Also wasn’t very impressed with Patsy when she went off to Hong Kong and didn’t write to Delia and then turned up expecting her to just pretend nothing had happened. She was a bit of a dick to Delia all round really, snapping at her then crawling into bed with her later all apologetic. Delia should have told her to stick it.

Sr MJ is my favourite character, and always has been. Couldn't stand Jenny!

I hated Jenny too!!! I just never admit it as everyone seems to love her. I found her stuck up and judgmental.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2023 09:41

@PaperwhiteTheGhost yes she was. And from what I read about her In real life, I suspect she wasn't actually that nice.

Catspyjamas17 · 14/02/2023 09:54

From reading the books I found Jenny a realistic human being of the time. Better than some of the cardboard cut out characters they have in it now.

Catspyjamas17 · 14/02/2023 09:57

Jennifer Worth sounds quite an admirable person to me.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/02/2023 09:58

Chummy was my least favourite.
Jenny was stuck up but did seem to learn some humility
Cynthia... I hope she recovered. She was let down
Patsy... wish we learnt more
Barbara... genuine
Valerie... neutral feelings
Phyllis... fantastic
Lucille... a snob

I had neutral feelings about Valerie too. I think they tried way to hard with the 'salt of the earth, East London girl' shtick and it ended up making her one-dimensional.

CarPoor · 14/02/2023 12:10

Aw I loved Chummy.

Barbara was obviously my favourite, and Phylis. I wasn't a fan of Valerie. I don't remember much about patsy.

I liked Jenny even if she was stuck up. She was a bit less frilly than they can be and she had good development.

I actually like all the characters. I like Dr Turner I just find him amusing. I also like sister MJ.

Lucille has never been my favourite but I'm not a fan right now at all, just how can she do this to Cyril?

I think originally it was a bit more hard hitting. People died, people didn't have happy outcomes. There was more racism/sexism and the nuns were definitely less accepting. It's a bit too right on these days. There's always been characters who are shocked by the above but now the whole cast is almost more accepting than these days. I know that it's depicting opinions changing with the times but it's a bit fast.

There was a boy with cancer last week and it was very happy music playing over his chemo. And this week with the happy let's have this heroin addict into our home. It's a bit too happy

bendmeoverbackwards · 14/02/2023 12:53

I loved Chummy.

I also thought Valerie was a bit of a meh character but the storyline of her grandma being the back street abortionist was fantastic. CTM at its best.

Bubbylana · 14/02/2023 13:23

Perhaps because she is depressed Lucilles judgement is a bit screwed and she feels safer in Jamaica. But I love Cyril and cant forgive the way she has treated him. Hope Sr MJ dosent die and that Phyillis stays forever she has always been my favourite. Im Going to start watching The Royal now, ive never seen it.

Sunshineparasol · 14/02/2023 13:32

I think Lucille will come back. I don't think it would end that Cyril is left adrift and we never see Lucille again. The baby situation being resolved (with a baby!) is exactly what viewers would like to see, especially at the end of a series.

My guess is that the big finale news might be that Lucille is pg Smile Perhaps she even concealed it from Cyril when he went over because she didn't want to upset him if it didn't work out, so she's further along than thought and that's also why she couldn't/didn't want to fly back over?
