Anyone in for the Christmas special? Just starting!

Didn't she open up her home for injured soldiers at the end of the last series?

TinselSniffer · 30/12/2022 15:04

I didn't think the evacuee was sweet, I thought she was a cheeky ungrateful little madam, and I seriously doubt her behaviour would have been tolerated in the Farnham household of the 1940s!

I struggle generally with characters behaving in ways other than the norm for the period. The way Mrs Hall sometimes speaks to Siegfried, for example, would have been very rude and not 'her place'. Women did not have the autonomy and freedom to speak on equal terms with men as is depicted, and I don't think this should be whitewashed away.

I agree I thought she was really precocious and ungrateful. It didn't ring true that they would have all pandered to her tbh.

I do love watching ACGAS but it is terrible for retrofitting 21st century mores onto 1930s rural England.
I too thought the evacuee was a tad pert (the class difference between someone like her & Mrs Pomfrey World have rendered her speechless, not asking for chocolates!)
And the way Helen wears trousers even when 'in town' - there's no way they would have been respectable wear for a woman then. One episode they even had Tristan's gf (the Asian one) going off to work in a bank wearing trousers!!!
But it's undemanding fluffy comfort viewing so I try not to let it bother me much

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/12/2022 21:24

Bark call the midwife does the same thing, its annoying.

Clawdy · 30/12/2022 23:29

Barkcloth I agree with you, but in the books there are several mentions of Helen wearing trousers and James noticing how good she looks in them! 😊

Barkcloth · 31/12/2022 09:05

clawdy I've read all the books but it was over 40 years ago so I don't remember that! 😂
I'm sure IRL she would have worn them on the farm, just not in town. (Also have to add that I really love her outfits)

Yes I agree

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/12/2022 09:17

Has anyone noticed how the actor who plays Helen nearly always wears dark red?

SirChenjins · 31/12/2022 10:01

I agree @Barkcloth but the scriptwriters are on a hiding to nothing - they have to write in this way or they’d be accused of all kinds of isms, and it would probably make for quite uncomfortable viewing if they stuck too rigidly to the 1930s societal norms.

Robin233 · 31/12/2022 12:06

Enjoyed it , but not as good as the episode when mrs hall meets her son

I can't believed she kissed fucking Gerald!

She fancies Gerald. She wants to rip his tweeds off.

I was delighted she snogged him.

She emphatically does not want to rip Siegfried's tweeds off. (and I don't blame her)

Ginger1982 · 13/01/2023 20:45

@HangoverSquare all the more Siegfried for me then! 😂

LIZS · 06/03/2023 15:20

Just seen they are starting filming series 4 today!

SirChenjins · 07/03/2023 08:44

Brilliant news! Can’t wait for the next series 😊
