I'm starting this thread as I dont think anyone else has for this third series.

Mainly because I got really confused watching earlier episodes and am hoping others will take part and patiently explain things.

Not sure if will be on iPlayer after 1st episode or whether we will all have to watch at tv pace.

Oooh posting to join discussion!

Howeverdoyouneedme · 18/12/2022 19:37

Watching now

Popfan · 18/12/2022 20:21

I don't quite understand why Lyra is so important... she's Eve reincarnated??

Also, why didn't the angel just magic to her and whizz her away?

It is all a bit difficult! I have to concentrate a bit too hard.

Gruelle · 18/12/2022 20:34

God how I love this show. After waiting so long for S3 I want to make it last. But I also want to sit up all night and watch the whole thing!

They made a good attempt at the Angels in Ep 1, given how powerfully characterised they are in the books. And the Magisterium is always compelling to watch. I suppose the slowness of pace was a very deliberate decision. It makes it all wonderfully immersive - but also quite frustrating.

Think I’ll do one more tonight, and save the rest.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/12/2022 21:45

Watched episode 1 with the dc. There is some complaining about changes from the books but overall a decent start.

Also, I would like to look as effortlessly elegant and stylish as Mrs Coulter.

dun1urkin · 18/12/2022 21:50

I love the books with a passion but am strangely ok with the deviations. I like the chapel on the cliffs / beach as an alternative to a cave in the Himalayas. I don’t know why they spent so long introducing Ogunwe though, in the books he’s just ‘there’. Can’t wait to see the Mulefa!!!

dun1urkin · 18/12/2022 21:51

Agreed re Mrs Coulter style. I’m the (crap) film where she’s played by Nicole Kidman she’s also tremendously well dressed. There’s a coat I still think about….

Notoironing · 18/12/2022 22:03

What ages are series 1 and 2 suitable for?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/12/2022 07:34

I'm assuming they spent so long with Ogunwe to show how Asriel has recruited people to his cause as there is a decent amount of description and world building in the books about him.

Looking forward to the Mulefa too.

The dc were not impressed with what we've seen of the Galivespians so far. "They've given them wings? Why? They are supposed to be on dragonflies!"

Howeverdoyouneedme · 19/12/2022 08:54

Series 1 and 2… maybe 10 upwards.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/12/2022 09:34

My dc3 is only 10 now and watched them when they first came out. They had been introduced over time with having the audio books on long trips. I'm trying to encourage them to start the books now.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 19/12/2022 17:22

Besotted with these books, and besotted with the first two seasons. Am resisting the temptation not to binge watch the whole of Season 3 without DH, as we tend to watch these together. So far we are only the first episode in, but so far 'The Amber Spyglass' promises to be just as good as the first two.

In answer to the question posted above, Lyra is the new Eve and the Magisterium - an oppressive religion-based dictatorship - are determined to kill her to prevent a second fall. The books are a loose allusion to Milton's Paradise Lost, but they blend religion with modern-day physics and the study of Dark Matter, which once it's let loose wreaks all manner of havoc and has some scary repercussions. It's mindblowing that the idea of a multiverse is theoretically possible.

Ruth Wilson makes an amazing Mrs Coulter and it's good to see more of Asriel in the first episode too.

Even the opening credits are brilliant!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 19/12/2022 17:22

I've also read that once Pullman publishes the third instalment of The Book of Dust HBO are potentially interested in televising that too.

jamoncrumpets · 19/12/2022 17:40

Really odd for them to just drop the series with no fanfare. No prominence on iPlayer. Weird.

Gruelle · 19/12/2022 17:51

I agree, @jamoncrumpets, I almost missed yesterday - after feeling, at the end of S2, that I’d die of longing for the next season. No publicity at all as far as I could see.

Very strange.

jamoncrumpets · 19/12/2022 17:57

I follow Lin Manuel Miranda on SM and radio silence. Something's happened, will ask DH, who's in the biz, what it might be.

Yes, I've been watching for this for ages and couldn't figure out why it wasn't being announced, or why UK viewers had apparently been left out in the cold. The format now it is released is also completely different from the first two seasons when they were screened weekly.

My guess is some form of licensing disagreement between HBO and the BBC.

jamoncrumpets · 19/12/2022 18:03

DH says licensing issues most likely. Oh well, I've got a nasty UTI and feeling rough, it's good timing. Up to bed with the kiddos at 8 and will watch in bed this eve.

jamoncrumpets · 19/12/2022 18:04

DH also says targeted ads etc not so necessary for third series as you already have your audience. Hence less visibility.

UrsulaPandress · 19/12/2022 18:18

I'm waiting impatiently for the third Book of Dust.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/12/2022 18:22

Also in the queue for the 3rd Book of Dust. Such a cliffhanger at the end of book 2!

I've been logging for the next Pullman instalment for more of my life than not. I got Northern Lights on my stocking the Christmas I was in year 7 so i must have been 12 and spent several, frustrated, author websites and twitter not a thing years waiting for more. I'm now 39!

Rhondaa · 19/12/2022 18:58

I love this programme. Don't quite understand it all but the characters, scenery etc are all quite mesmerising.

'Also, why didn't the angel just magic to her and whizz her away?'

Yes I thought that. All this nipping between worlds with a knife but next thing they're trudging off to get a ferry.
