BBC4, 7.30. It's an oldie (1995), but very good.

I rented an old bbc Northanger Abbey the other night

God it was awful - I could only sit through about half an hour

policywonk · 02/02/2008 13:49

Ahhh, Ciaran Hinds is just right in this one.

Heated · 02/02/2008 13:51

Bliss!

StrangeTown · 02/02/2008 13:53

Yes, this one is perfect - Amanda Root excellent casting.

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/02/2008 13:59

love this version !

JackieNo · 02/02/2008 19:21

Bump - almost starting...

Awwww I can't watch it because dp and the girls are watching crappy dancing or something on the other side. Tis my own fault for being so anti-TV and refusing to contemplate a second one.

southeastastra · 02/02/2008 20:23

argh why do they start them so early

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/02/2008 23:02

aww, watched bits of it...dh loves it too

JackieNo · 03/02/2008 07:58

I managed to see it too (DH put the DCs to bed, bless him), and it was as good as I remembered. Everything works - no bum notes, and despite being 13 years old, it's really not showing its age.

Surroundedbysnot · 04/02/2008 20:37

And Robert Glenister better than Philip!

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 11:58

oh,have to disagree, love Philip Glenister !

Surroundedbysnot · 05/02/2008 12:18

Maybe it was captain harville's breeches ...

marina · 05/02/2008 12:21

I read an obituary of Catherine Wearing, the woman who produced this and a lot of other great drama for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 - she died over Christmas, aged only 48
What a loss
I can watch this any time I like due to a judicious DVD purchase, and I do
IMO it is still a near faultless adaptation in terms of casting and production values
And I don't often like Amanda Root tbh - but she is stunning in this
Capp, was that Northanger Abbey the barking one with Peter Firth in?

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 12:22

that's very sad

marina · 05/02/2008 12:27

Obituary she was actually only 41 , dreadful
Look at all the other great stuff she did

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/02/2008 12:29

thanks for that Marina..

Surroundedbysnot · 05/02/2008 15:14

Susan Fleetwood, who played Lady Russell, died just after the series was completed.

theheadgirl · 05/02/2008 15:48

Oh I love this adaptation too. It was first on Xmas 1995, when DD1 was just 3 months old. I remember sitting BF, with just christmas tree lights on watching it, and thinking "life is good"
