Hi all, I've been a mumsnetter for a while but don't really come on this category so didn't notice the original threads. I have two girls age 20 months and 3 years and am a (relatively new) reborner who goes on doll collecting forums which the ladies in the show go on. The show was made by ch4 to sensationalise 'reborn collecting' they failed to mention that the lady who went to the states was going to a doll show while there and the doll was an added bonus not the main reason. Also her dolls are hand made from clay and are one of a kind NOT reborns which are made from vinyl. I beleive she suffers from OCD which many suffers 'obsess' over one thing or another, luckily her dolls aren't causing anyone any harm.
Overall these dolls are only collectable dolls, just like my MIL collects expensive figurines and others collect model trains or crystal ornaments.
I'm happy to answer any constructive questions.

BevB - I know what you are trying to achieve by posting - a little bit of understanding and empathy from us.

Take last night, for example. VeryLittleCarrot asked us to take part in a poll for extended b/f, and there has been a media request for extended b/fers. #You can bet your bottom dollar that they will sensationalise this topic like the reborn programme.

It takes me around a month doing it in my 'spare' time (I've never timed it) and others can knock one out in less than a week so realistically anything from 20 - 60 hours depending on how 'good' you are, how well done the doll is and technique. The last head I rooted took 5 evenings to root.

I couldn't really understand the obsession for the woman who went to the USA but I felt so sorry for the poor woman who wanted her own little Harry because she missed her grandson so much - I actually felt myself getting teary for her. AS she said men have their trains and cars or whatever - it's not hurting anyone so live and let live as someone else has said. I love the thought of having 3 made up of how my girls looked as babies but I probably won't. I would feel strange walking about with one in a pram and buying expensive clothes for it and carrying it around in a c ar seat - real babies are a hassle who wants to re-create that with a doll?? But if it makes people happy then so be it. It was a strange program but I'm glad I caught it. The woman with 4 kids who makes the babies - hugely talented lady. She's providing a service people want so good luck to her.
