MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #36): The one where gluten-free and baguettes stopped being about baked goods. Best leave it at that.

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Alexander Armstrong annoying me a bit in this show - stop talking to that poor woman while she is trying to do your make-up!

Me too, I like his enthusiasm but the whole kpop thing was too gimmicky & didn’t really have much depth to it. Some nice filming shots though.

Saram13 · 08/11/2022 22:47

@MigsandTiggs 😂

@bettys 😱😂 I hadn't until now.....

Looks like I'm not missing out massively on the Armstrong programme 🤔

TheLoupGarou · 08/11/2022 23:08

@IheartBTS DH and I said exactly the same. It felt like they were going for a Michael Palin vibe, but AA just doesn't have enough charm - it felt very forced, like he was slightly aloof, looking down on everyone.

bettys some really nice shots of Seoul.

MigsandTiggs · 08/11/2022 23:18

I feel that it's the format of the AA show that's problematic. It would be better if each episode concentrated on a single aspect of SK and explored it in depth. Too many YouTubers, but maybe they were easier to get on board?

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 09/11/2022 08:14

I find the recent spate of celebrities travelling shows (bar the legendary Michael P and Joanna L) are very poor. Very superficial and no depth. A bit disrespectful too.

The worst was Paul Hollywood in Japan. When he brought a pot noodle to a respected ramen chef, I near threw my telly out the window.

TheLoupGarou · 09/11/2022 08:33

Oh my God re Paul Hollywood in Japan. I'm so glad I missed it!

Saram13 · 09/11/2022 08:35

Re: the AA programme (which I haven't seen - for newcomers to the board, I'm in mainland Europe, we get BBC here but not other UK tv channels). Bit of an obvious point, but I suppose part of the problem is that once you are interested in something and know a fair amount about it that background knowledge will colour your expectations and you'll see 'mistakes'/missed opportunities in a way you wouldn't if you were totally new to it (like many viewers will be).

Or maybe AA is indeed just the wrong presenter. I did see the Michael Palin programme on North Korea (it was on National Geographic here, not sure if it was on a UK domestic channel first). Really enjoyed that, but then again it's Michael Palin 😁and I don't know much about North Korea. So less margin for 'error'.

Saram13 · 09/11/2022 08:37

@FedUpWithBriiiiick Paul Hollywood in Japan? 😱Sounds ego-tastic. I'm getting Monkey Tennis vibes 🙈

MigsandTiggs · 09/11/2022 08:37

The worst was Paul Hollywood in Japan. When he brought a pot noodle to a respected ramen chef, I near threw my telly out the window.
That really pissed me off too. Kudos to the ramen chef for remaining polite. I would have thrown out Hollywood instantly. He's a smirking, smug bastard.

MigsandTiggs · 09/11/2022 08:43

I might be sharing with the converted, but this episode on the benefits of eating kimchi/fermented foods was very interesting.

"...that place with the canals... "

Is this that weird shopping precinct in Macau that also featured in Boys Over Flowers by any chance? (I haven't watched many cdramas)

Chinese dramas have an oh-so-subtle (snort) agenda of promoting Chinese history, tourism and culture so they always go to old part of Suzhou and have a snog on a bridge there Cobol. It does look pretty to be fair

MigsandTiggs · 09/11/2022 11:01

Pol, what happens when you actually have the horse sculpture in your own house, Extra points? Asking for a friend. Grin

Cobol · 09/11/2022 11:04

Ah, proper canals. That sounds fair enough. Like the historic fortress wall they're always hanging out next to in kdramas.

I'm still not entirely convinced to give cdramas a go based on the rest of that list, though 😂

That was an awful show, he came across as so rude and uncultured! It was embarrassing to watch. The Michael Palin North Korea show sounds interesting. I'm going to have a look for that Saram

I need to start a cdrama so I can join in the bingo!
