A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I heartily recommend the series. It has much to commend it but internet chatroom bits were especially hilarious to residents of this thread.

I see, thanks @boatyardblues I have always wondered. I have seen Her Private Life but maybe it was before I discovered this thread and realised I wasn't the only filthy noona around😂. I might have to watch it again just for the internet chat room bits.

This. Also read the spoilers. Not gonna watch it.

I've been going through the Film 4 playlist before they run out. I thought I'd be fine rewatching Train to Busan as I've seen it before........nope. Still got the heebie jeebies and was all 😍 and 😭 at Gong Yoo

Really enjoyed The Swordsman, Jang Hyuk is damn fine even in scruffy rags didn't even need to get his abs out. Violent in a slashy Joseon way.

bettys · 26/10/2022 12:32

That should've been sword slashy way.

Also watched Lady Vengeance. Bit too grim for me.

Ooh I watched train to busan with dd, 17.it’s great!

boatyardblues · 26/10/2022 21:52

I couldn’t get on to All4 tonight. How much longer are the films available for?

I ended up watching Glitch on Netflix instead which is proving to be interesting. Great slow ratcheting up of the story. It has the FL from Into the Ring in a supporting role and a great cast. It’s quirky in a good way. I’m not 100% sure what’s going on but I like it. 😄

Metheven · 26/10/2022 22:04

Train to Busan is possibly the best zombie film around. Plus it has Gong Yoo. In a suit. What more could you possibly want?

Rowdythree · 26/10/2022 23:23

Boaty I think they're on until Monday 31st. We just watched Swordsman, which was very swooshy with lots of blood and assassins. The bad guy reminded me of David Seaman 😆

Hello @Pinkypong 👋 Train to Busan is just brilliant, one of my favourites.

JinBhoot · 27/10/2022 02:33

Hello 👋
Real life is getting in the way of Kdramas.

Currently, I am enjoying Under Queen’s Umbrella, competitive mothers are giving 11+ preparation vibes ( I live in grammar school area).

Good link Boaty. It will be hard to overturn the pervasiveness of Korean beauty standards when their society is so highly competitive, but kudos for making a start!

Andante57 · 27/10/2022 09:49

That’s very interesting, Boaty, thank you for that.
I think they’ve got quite a struggle to stop idol culture but I agree in Korea it seems to be really extreme.
Or maybe it’s the same everywhere, I don’t know. I’m much too old to follow the latest bands and singers in UK (though I make an exception for handsome Korean actors) so I don’t know if there’s similar idol worship here.
