I would absolutely love if they had a Strictly lottery, pick 12 random viewers or Mumsnet strictly thread posters, strictly no mawkish stories, just an honest mix of folk who know their shit (@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams 😁) and people like me who don’t have the beautiful toned arms of Jowita and the lithe bod of Karen.
my name is Radge and I am here for the Journey. Gio, Kai or Karen please. 🤞

😂😂😂

I’m always surprised when people complain about not knowing who half the contestants are, as if it matters. The format would work with Joe and Jo public just the same IMO.

ArcaneWireless · 17/10/2022 12:37

I’ll have Gorka please radge.

As long as he’s fine with fat shambling round him.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/10/2022 12:41

I think in the early series the pros were all really competitive too — their background was only really in teaching and competing. The new ones who've done stage shows and had to work collaboratively are probably a bit less cut throat. Grin

I'd happily dance same-sex in the MN series. I'd even lead as a bit of a handicap. But no trousers or jumpsuits — I'd want matching sparkly dresses and identical hair/make-up to my pro. (I'd actually want to dance with Kai, but I think there might be a long queue!)

Excellent points, @EsmaCannonball .
That's why Tony's dance was such a tonic, and why Ellie Simmonds is a joy to watch.

Agree with both of you. Ellie is an utter joy.

EsmaCannonball · 17/10/2022 12:52

I've just seen the song list for BBC Week and I'm slightly disappointed ('cept for Grandstand. What a theme tune!). It's a mixture of 'done before' and 'a bit random' and isn't exactly screaming 'Yes, that's what I think about when I think of the BBC.' I mean, I watched Line of Duty more than once and I couldn't hum the theme tune even if Balaclava Man was threatening to drop me over a stairwell.

And I'll just say this, if we're talking Eurovision, Pump-Pump by Fredi and the Friends is the greatest performance of all time, not Waterloo. They've missed the opportunity to have Fleur embody an over-enthusiastic air-hostess and Vito a mildly out of his depth geography teacher, while both are clad in fuchsia and accompanied by Finland's answer to Elton John.

ShakeYourFeathers · 17/10/2022 12:58

So do the singers my ears get a bit of a rest next week? Because not many of the tunes are actual songs.

I definitely think that this is the first year for a few years where i noticed people forgetting their steps in the first week or two, which was almost refreshing! When James did his jive(maybe?) and anton commented on it.

I want to see people learn something, I just don't want all the sob stories and things, it just turns me off to be honest. Everyone has things like this, but they just don't all choose to talk about them!

I don't mean people forgetting an odd step (or even Kay totally blanking in the DO). I mean in years gone by we had Fiona thingy who was literally drag round the floor every week or John Sargent who clearly did not give a . I can't think who the last really dreadful contestant was. In recent year the 'bad' ones all seem to have some redeeming features and I've thought if they can get over X or start doing Y they would OK. In days of yore there were a few that had zero attributes and I felt would never improve

I expect we're going to discover that VW was always, since Jayde was knee high to a grasshopper, her inspiration and the reason why she became a comedian. With tears.

She's not been the worst so far, but if we are judging on dancing + improvement, she's heading there now Matt has gone and either she's manipulating everyone with her interesting ability to be almost incoherent with sobs one minute and "geddin there" high fiving the next, or the producers themselves are. The interaction with Claudia was bizarre. You choose to do your whole VT/training wotsit talking about your sister and then someone kindly mentions her name and you are rendered speechless with sobs for 20 seconds till your vote is in? I felt very sorry for Claudia, who was clearly "what the fuck have I done"

I really don't like speaking like this on these lovely threads and prefer to concentrate on the dancing (and thank you to those posting those fabulous videos from days gawn by- reminds me of DD being about 4 and wanting to watch "the ladies in the frocks" in the run up to Christmas. Love Erin and the originals and the presentation- you forget how over-produced and graphics and lights led it's all become until you see the old performances) but ..Jayde is the first dancer that while appreciating she's been through stuff, makes me feel manipulated and somehow sullied by it all.

Anyway. Shuddurp Sol.

Said everything I was thinking!

Am really tired of everyone's feelings and MH journeys. We all have those. But can you dance?

I feel this way too!

ArcaneWireless · 17/10/2022 14:11

On song and dance alone?

Bye Moll.

Aquarius1234 · 17/10/2022 14:19

I love the Eastenders theme tune.
Apprentice great tune.
Casualty average .
Line of Duty ok.
Victoria Wood Funny.
ABBA not the best tune.
Kyms sounds OK.

ShakeYourFeathers · 17/10/2022 14:20

Molly and Carlos: Couples' Choice to Grange Hill Theme Tune, celebrating BBC Children's Programming wonder if that will be the. 80d version or the 90s/00s version. The 90s version is much better to dance to and my favourite version

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/10/2022 14:26

Kev and Stace did that (Tango) already no? Confused

FartOutLoudDay · 17/10/2022 14:43

Of that list I reckon Hamza got the best deal. Can see Molly and Carlos’ dance having shades of Nikitia and Tilly’s dance to Matilda last year - can’t remember if that was a couple’s choice

They used to say that Strictly beat The X Factor in the ratings because The X Factor tried to make you cry whereas Strictly tried to make you laugh. But Strictly has gone very mawkish lately. Even the pro-dance was all about body-image, mental health and self-esteem this week. (Danced by a load of gorgeous, thin people who wouldn't have been cast on this show if they hadn't been beautiful and whose contract isn't getting renewed the day they get a wrinkle.)

Strictly is (or was) popular for the same reason Fred and Ginger films were big box-office during the Depression. People want a couple of hours of escape. They want the sequins and the lights and the big-band music. They want a dance that is dramatic followed by one that is romantic followed by one that is so funny it makes them phone someone afterwards and say, 'Oh my god, did you ever think you'd see (celebrity's name) do that?' When Strictly is on, the nights are getting cold and dark and people who are worried about their health or their bills or their jobs just want to be cheered up for a couple of hours. The Debbie Downer moments are becoming so prevalent that they risk overpowering the fun and glamour that make people tune in.

This.
I think this is why so many people had an issue with Jayde’s ‘sob’ story.
I don’t want to focus on my loved ones who are no longer with us.
I want to laugh at the comedy dances, gossip about possible romances and moan about the judge’s scoring.

I'd love it if there was a general public version of strictly. I don't see why they need to have celebrities. Although I suppose with the internet there'd be loads of digging online about who the contestants are. Whereas that doesn't happen with something like a quiz show.

Aquarius1234 · 17/10/2022 15:20

Hate Doctor Who.... anyone else..

xsquared · 17/10/2022 15:24

I love Ballroom Blitz and hope Graz and Kym do it justice.

Feeling a bit worried for Mollie and Carlos if they have the 80s Grange Hill theme tune. 90s one is definitely better for doing an energetic CC to.

SolInvictus · 17/10/2022 15:46

I think it's a little bit unfair that some of the slebs will have music that one way or another we associate with them, or are so iconic that we all know them, while others have - say what?
I only finished binging LoD earlier this year, no idea of the music while Dr. Who, Casualty and Blue Peter are indelibly in my music memory box.
I think Kym and Graziano have a job on their hands. And no idea whatsoever about Ellie and Nikita.

Oh well, it will be interesting. I bloomin wish doing this would mean no fake blood and fangs for Halloween though.

I think Helen and Gorka have the best one. That'll be great I reckon.

My 16 year old DD dances (although not ballroom) and she would love to go on it, she's watched it for years. She often comments on sone of the technical steps/aspects and sometimes Craig's comments are very similar to what she's saying. (Although he's seen as the mean judge, I quite like knowing what they're doing right/wrong from a technique pov rather than Motsi saying they brought joy and enthusiasm to the dance - or Shirley getting all unnecessary and fanning herself because one of the men has their shirt off!)

SoupDragon · 17/10/2022 15:56

More often than not, Craig's negativity is actually giving good feedback as to what they should work on. Anton is similar I think.

FKATondelayo · 17/10/2022 15:56

I'm so happy I'll be at the Legally Blonde musical on Saturday instead of having to sit through that dreck.

I bloody hate the BBC's obsession with itself. And if that's the best it can come up with after 100 years honestly ditch the licence fee. Grin

Anyway completely agree with all PPs who are sick of the 'mental health' angles and sob stories. I don't care about that. I want to know who's shagging who. We've not had one 'rumour' this year series AFAIK.

Sunbird24 · 17/10/2022 16:08

I saw a rumour that Molly and Nikita were now dating - because they looked at each other at the NTAs or something…
