Anyone watching 'Maxine' on Channel 5?

I watched the first one last night - wondered what people thought. The acting seems a bit over the top; if Ian and Maxine had behaved that suspiciously in real life, I would have thought they'd have been arrested immediately.

I’ve recorded it to watch, is it a 3 part?

AnApparitionQuipped · 11/10/2022 20:27

Yes, 9-10pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. I quite enjoyed last night's episode, though as I said, the acting was a bit OTT. It shone an interesting light on the dysfunctional relationship between Ian and Maxine. There seems to be a deliberate (and understandable) minimisation of focus on the murder victims and their parents.

I watched it and was glad they didn’t focus much on the poor girls or their families. It’s a shame the actor playing Ian Huntley doesn’t look a thing like him but I did quite like finding out about their relationship bloody freaks.

AnApparitionQuipped · 11/10/2022 20:37

Yes, the Huntley actor isn't much of a physical match. The woman playing Maxine is a good likeness, though.

I am watching it but don’t like the way they are portraying her as a bit of an abused victim And I really hope they don’t make this out to be why she didn’t say anything. they both should be hung x

A580Hojas · 11/10/2022 20:43

No. I don't wish to be entertained by the actual murder of two 10 year olds.

Have you never watched any documentaries on serial killers or anything ?

LizzieSiddal · 11/10/2022 20:45

I too was very glad they didn’t show either of those girls, if they had I would have switched it off.
At the time of this happening I had a 10 year old Dd and just couldn’t watch or listen to anything about the case, so I am interested to see what actually happened between Carr and Huntley.

AnApparitionQuipped · 11/10/2022 20:46

Well, it's supposed to be about the relationship between Huntley and Carr, rather than the murder victims, but obviously not everyone will want to watch it.

That’s not really what it is about, as the name of the series suggests.

I haven’t watched it yet - will catch up tomorrow evening or Thursday. I vividly remember the soham murders.

I think Huntley was very over the top and the attempt to give him an alibi could have had a bus driven through it - any number of people could confirm she was miles away that fateful day.

Documentaries are very different from low budget sensationalised TV dramas from Channel 5.

As you might have guessed I won't be watching. I'm assuming the girl's parents, siblings and other friends and family are still alive and it is not fair to use their grief as entertainment.

A580Hojas · 11/10/2022 20:48

No, I don't watch documentaries about serial killers. Does that make me unusual?

Anotherautumn · 11/10/2022 20:50

It’s a strange thread to contribute to, in fairness. Of course, you just wanted to publicly state your virtue over and above ours

It was undoubtedly tragic but it was also a pivotal and interesting case. It started the safeguarding procedures that are now law, it led to a sea change if you like in terms of child protection and Carr herself is fascinating when we consider her through a feminist lens.

not watched the programme but I’ve always got the impression it was something like that, as well as being extremely stupid and naive. I don’t think she’s the same league of evil as Huntley in the way Myra Hindley and rose west were to Ian Brady and Fred west

I don't think it makes you unusual. The thread was intended to be a discussion thread for people watching the programme, not a suggestion that everyone must watch it. I don't watch 'EastEnders' but I don't go onto the EastEnders threads to proclaim that fact.

Not even close, Hindley and West were guilty of murder and torture several times over. Carr was not even in soham when the girls were murdered.

Begoniasforever · 11/10/2022 20:56

I’m not sure I agree she’s being portrayed as just an abuse victim as a justification, I think although he was clearly abusing her verbally and emotionally, in episode one she’s coming across as in control, she can stand up to him, he’s the out of control one.

im watching it as I remember so vividly the case and can’t for the life of me understand what she was doing protecting him. Clearly I can’t understand him either, he’s so heinous but you hear of these women who do this, protect these animals and it beggars belief someone could do that.

I wonder where she is now, if she’s ashamed of who and what she is. That public money, hard earned tax payers, was and is being used to protect her.

No not really I think what makes you unusual is you are actively opening threads about it and commenting that you don’t. Like how you think it makes you better than people who do. That’s what makes you unusual.

i,don’t watch strictly and can’t understand any one who does, but I don’t go online looking for threads on it and post telling folks I don’t watch it. Why would I.

We were talking about this the other night coincidently. Our thoughts were thst he probably came up with some story that he thought the police were going to fit him up as he had prior convictions and didn’t he also tell a story about one the girls having a nosebleed so coming into his house. He prob spun her a story and said it would save a lot of hassle if she just gave an alibi rather than her at that point knowing he had actually done it, then when you’ve started off a lie like that it’s hard to get out of

Yeah but once you know right? I’d lie for my husband if I thought he was innocent but the moment I knew, I can’t perceive I’d stick by him like that.

FitAt50 · 11/10/2022 21:03

I found it really interesting. I've always found it strange that she is so hated considering she wasn't even there when he killed those poor girls and did not know that he had.

Anotherautumn · 11/10/2022 21:04

Not really her fault though @Begoniasforever (re the public money being spent) I mean, she wouldn’t need protection if people stayed within the law. She also has a child, I believe, and certainly the child is worthy of protection.

@Morph22010 i believe that is what happened. His words were ‘the thing is Maxine, they came into the house.’

JessesMum777888 · 11/10/2022 21:04

She was so hated because she lied to protect her murdering bastard of a boyfriend who had killed 2 beautiful little girls.

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 11/10/2022 21:08

On my list to watch. I hope it’s been made sensitively.
MC may well have been in an abusive relationship but she herself has very few morals. I don’t feel sorry for her and think it was right that she went to prison after lying to the police.

MarshmallowMadness · 11/10/2022 21:13

If she was the poor downtrodden girlfriend who didn’t know what he’d done, why the hell was she scrubbing the whole house (assuming this part of the programme is based on facts)? Evil bitch.
