DH surprised me with the box set of all series of Northern Exposure this week and I think I will get nothing done before Christmas as a result!

Any other fans of Joel, Maggie, Chris In The Morning and gang?

That theme tune - I’m right back in the early 90s as soon as I hear it.

Loved Alaska! But only went Juneau side (state capital).
We took ferry from south of Vancouver, amd had a few days of sleeping on deckchairs outside (roofed open deck) while sailing through beautiful little islands complete with bears and orcas.

There are no through roads so each town involves a boat ride.
Small towns very influenced by their history, Russian, Norwegian etc.
People were friendly and bars were Nothern Exposure-like with very good local beers.
Lots of good halibut too.

One of my school friends moved to Alaska. I met her at our 20 year reunion which was in 2004, so I was still in the grip of Northern Exposure longing. She was working as a GP near Anchorage (possibly suburbs of Anchorage) and she said that there are two types of people who move to Alaska. Firstly the adventurous and capable type who are drawn to challenge and the great outdoors, secondly the ones who are trying to run away from something or disappear, so people who might have committed crimes or who have mental health issues. She said that it often doesn't work out at all well for the second type as you need to be resourceful, prepared and be able to plan ahead for all eventualities in such a harsh environment and the second type are often too chaotic to be able to cope safely.

Anyway she put me off a bit as I am very much not drawn to the great outdoors. I love to look at it, obviously, but it suits me best to see it from the warm side of a huge picture window. Grin

I adored Northern Exposure. Would love to watch it again.
I have the soundtrack on cd somewhere. Fabulous.

mrwalkensir · 11/10/2022 20:05

Crikeyblimey yep - we have the cd

I was just looking at the entry on Wikipedia to see what the actors were up to nowadays. Rob Morrow (Joel) has a daughter called Tu Morrow 🙄 Puts North West in the shade a bit…

DameHelena · 12/10/2022 11:31

I liked it but was ever so slightly too young, so I'd love to watch it all again now. I remember being envious of Chris's house, which I recall as being a bit rugged and quite quirky.
I don't remember Joel leaving Hmm

DarcyProudman · 12/10/2022 12:05

Oh we loved Northern Exposure. I’d like to watch it over again 😊

LaLaLouella · 12/10/2022 12:12

I loved Northern Exposure - I keep hoping it's going to pop up soon on Netflix.

Chris in the Morning is still my perfect man...

Tree543 · 12/10/2022 23:43

I loved it. Had crushes on Ed and Fleischman and a girl crush on Maggie.

LisbonKid · 13/10/2022 17:30

It’s not the thing you fling…
It’s the fling itself😆😆😆😆

Mogginsthemog · 13/10/2022 18:24

I was obsessed with Northern Exposure, particularly Dr Joel Fleischman. Not the same once he left. Agree re the 1st series of Schitts creek.
I also wanted to be Maggie O'connor, as in imagined self as a bush pilot. Though in retrospective she was rather smug!

PoundShopPrincess · 14/10/2022 10:44

I loved Chris - so beautiful and laidback.

Mogginsthemog · 14/10/2022 11:38

Yes Chris was a cool dude

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/10/2022 15:09

I think John Corbett ending up married to Bo Derek and living on a huge ranch is a very ‘Chris’ thing. 😀

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 17/10/2022 14:49

Yes he did indeed. Still together I think too.
