I have made the terrible mistake of starting to watch The West Wing again

... on Prime.

Sigh. I have watched it all before, but not in years. Maybe 10 years. I love it so much. I'll never get to bed at a reasonable hour again 😫So many episodes!

What are your favourite scenes? Best episodes? It's so brilliant, every time.

OP posts:

Watching season 7 right now 😍

The West Wing is probably my favourite TV series. The bit with Sam explaining about the future and how fundamental the concept of privacy is, I get tingles watching it now, because it was so prescient.

It’s not about abortion. It’s about the next 20 years. Twenties and thirties, it was the role of government. Fifties and sixties, it was civil rights. The next two decades, it’s gonna be privacy. I’m talking about the Internet. I’m talking about cellphones. I’m talking about health records, and who’s gay and who’s not. And moreover, in a country born on a will to be free, what could be more fundamental than this?

I think about this often. And the bit where Josh drives the Prius (and crashes the monster truck). It still feels so relevant.

keeprunningupthathill · 07/10/2022 21:21

Oh I've just done my fourth watch.
'You get Hoynes' is my fave episode. Apparently Aaron sorkin intended Zoe to die when she got kidnapped which would have been better I think.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 07/10/2022 21:28

Wonderful thread. In need of a pickmeup and this wonderful series is it.

Thank you OP. That's my weekend sorted. 🙂

escapingthecity · 07/10/2022 21:29

@VeganSoulFood "babies come with hats".

I say that every time I see a baby in one, and I know who my people are by their response.

CaveMum · 07/10/2022 21:32

I’ve quoted “you wanna invoke the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing?!” more times than I dare admit to 😳

TheClitterati · 07/10/2022 21:33

I've somehow never watched it.

On prime you say ...

MrsOvertonsWindow · 07/10/2022 21:40

Just found it on Prime. Started watching Series 1.... bliss.

CaveMum · 07/10/2022 21:45

So jealous of those just starting to watch it for the first time! Be prepared for all other TV to be ruined for you, it’s as close to perfection as you can get!

dudsville · 07/10/2022 22:05

I watched 3 episodes tonight. The theme tune seems cheesy in a way that i didn't notice before, but I'm already so pleased, so many good lines, so smart and witty.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 07/10/2022 22:30

There’s so many amazing lines in the West Wing. I loved it first time through, and second. Third, I started to notice the very unequal treatment of men and women. Once seen, hard to unsee. It’s still a wonderful series, I would still love to work in the Bartlett administration (or, even better, the Santos administration) but I’ve had to admit, it’s very much of its time.

I love the episode when Josh and Toby get left behind.

Is this the one you mean?
I think Toby loses a bet and has to announce to everyone he meets that works at the White House.

Onewildandpreciouslife · 07/10/2022 23:22

One of the joys of lockdown was forcing my kids to watch introducing my kids to TWW.

At the last episode of season 1, they both insisted we immediately follow on with the first 2 episodes of season 2. A glorious binge!

Yayasisterhood · 08/10/2022 13:34

Oh happy days. Thats what I’ll do with October. This is my favourite scene.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/10/2022 13:39

The best scene doesn't even have any dialogue. It's Big Bird walking down the hall and sitting next to CJ 🤣🤣

CaveMum · 08/10/2022 14:02

Surely this is the best scene? Two words - Root canal

HelenaJustina · 08/10/2022 14:07

I can’t hear ‘it’s freezing outside’ without following through with ‘it is freezing too cold in Reykjavik. It is freezing too cold in Helsinki.’ S3E18

Nikolai Ivanovich: “On his arrival and during outdoor photograph opportunity, President Bartlet must wear overcoat.”
Sam Seaborn: “A coat?”
Nikolai Ivanovich: “He must wear coat. He must wear gloves. Scarves and ear muffs permissible but optional.”
Sam Seaborn: “Hang on ’cause… Yes, ’cause President Chigorin wants to wear a coat and doesn’t want to look like a wimp.”
Nikolai Ivanovich: “Sam, it is freezing too cold in Reykjavik. It is freezing too cold in Helsinki. It is freezing too cold in Gstaad. Why must every American president bound out of an automobile like as at a yacht club while in comparison our leader looks like… I don’t even know what word is.
Sam Seaborn: “Frumpy?”
Nikolai Ivanovich: “I don’t know what ‘frump’ is but onomatopoetically sounds right.”
Sam Seaborn: “It’s hard not to like a guy who doesn’t know ‘frumpy’ but knows ‘onomatopoeia’.”

CaveMum · 08/10/2022 14:12

Hmm, or maybe it’s this one

Pretty much anytime CJ tears a strip off someone!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 08/10/2022 14:14

We’ve just finished it again - I reckon it’s the 4th time DH and I have watched the whole thing through in the 16 years we’ve been married so we’re on about once every 4 years.

not going to lie, already excited for 2026 😂

MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/10/2022 19:00

Thank you so much - I'm having a great Saturday pottering about with Series 1 on. Just the best series ever.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 08/10/2022 22:12

My twins were 16 through lockdown and we convened nightly for an episode or two in ‘The Sit Room’. Just a brilliant series. Some great guest stars including John Goodman and Mark Hartman, fantastic

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/10/2022 22:22

Oh I'd forgotten the insults!

Stravaig · 08/10/2022 23:00

S7: If I'm going to jump off a cliff, and you're going to get pushed off a cliff ... 😍

(left incomplete and unattributed so no spoilers for first-timers!)

noodlezoodle · 09/10/2022 01:47

Soooo good. My favourite is Dead Irish Writers where Lord John persists in referring to Leo as 'Gerald', and Donna is Canadian.

Our household also loves Studio Sixty on the Sunset Strip which is Aaron Sorkin at his most Sorkin-y, both good and bad. Also starring Bradley Whitford, if you're that way inclined 😀

beguilingeyes · 09/10/2022 10:53

Also still have the biggest crush on Toby

I started a re-watch during lockdown and listened to the podcast at the same time. The podcast has t-shirts. I have a blue one with the airplane 'signal' on it.

I made the mistake once of watching Election Day on on a plane and sobbed all across the Atlantic. Oh Leo....

Jimmy Smits is fiiiiinnneee.

PS. Sports Night is also excellent and Josh Malina is much more likeable in it (never warmed to Will).
