I have made the terrible mistake of starting to watch The West Wing again

... on Prime.

Sigh. I have watched it all before, but not in years. Maybe 10 years. I love it so much. I'll never get to bed at a reasonable hour again 😫So many episodes!

What are your favourite scenes? Best episodes? It's so brilliant, every time.

Hey! My people! There you are!
Personally my favourite scene has to be where CJ has woot canaw. That interaction between Josh & CJ makes me laugh everytime.... esp as I have also had woot canaw and it HURTS!!

I don't think a terrible mistake OP, I tend to have the whole 7 series run through at least once a year, usually when WFH in the background. There's nothing like Aaron Sorkin's typical cadence to trip an afternoon merrily along.

If you haven't done it already, I thoroughly recommend subscribing to the West Wing Weekly, and do a watch/listen along. It enriched the entire series for me.

LemonLymanDotCom · 07/10/2022 10:19

Oh, and if you don't have Prime, it's on All4. Yes there's ad breaks but still helps you get your WW fix.

Framilode · 07/10/2022 10:25

I've never seen it. Which channel is it on please?

Etinoxaurus · 07/10/2022 10:28

Rayna37 · 07/10/2022 07:25

Not only will it stop you getting to bed, you get up incredibly let down about the gulf between your actual job/life and your imaginary one as part of the Bartlet administration.

Yes! You know you’ve watched too much when real work just doesn’t have enough corridors to stride purposefully through.
Does anyone want something to notice to put you off? Like an ear worm once you tune into it’s irritating? Might break the spell so you can get an early night.

Knittedfairies · 07/10/2022 10:31

@Framilode - you've never watched 'The West Wing'? You're in for a treat; it's on All4.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/10/2022 10:32

I still show people the clip of the president dressing down that bible basher. I never finished watching it and have no idea why. I think I ended up sobbing at one episode too many and gave up. I will perhaps revisit

Diplidocus4 · 07/10/2022 10:32

Never watched it , is it on Netflix ?

Soscrewed · 07/10/2022 10:35

My favourite show ever I think. The perfect balance of drama and humour, combined with a touch of being educational.

I was just watching the other day and love the banter between the staff especially early on. The crowd shouts "we love you josh" and cj shouts back "it helps not to know him". All those little passing comments. Yes and woot canal, pluey the wolf, big block of cheese, pardoning the turkey.... I could go on. Still a fantastic and relevant show.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 07/10/2022 10:38

Had no idea it was on prime. Will get through it once I've finished Grey's anatomy for the 3rd time and then Bones for the second time. 😂😂

MarshaMelrose · 07/10/2022 10:44

I used to love the show in the early days but then, as the series went on, it was all so perfect that it was boring. Bartlett never made a mistake or wrong decision, there were no compromises made, no underhand dealing. Nothing was realistic. It was like Disney at the Whitehouse.

minou123 · 07/10/2022 10:52

I had never seen West Wing, but then a couple of years ago there was numerous ongoing running threads here on MN when Trump was president.

I was lurking and The West Wing came up as it explains the weird things that go on in US politics.

I think I binged watched all the Seasons in a week. Thanks MN 😊

"Bartlett never made a mistake or wrong decision, there were no compromises made, no underhand dealing. Nothing was realistic. It was like Disney at the Whitehouse."

Yes I can definitely understand that view. Although I think Leo & Josh got their hands dirty at points, Bartlett was kept away from that. I think they showed Bartlett as a meh husband (promised to stay for one term, stood for 2) and a difficult father. There was a bit with zoey where she said that his children were never able to show fear, he wouldn't allow it. So he definitely wasn't an easy character.

Margaret was my favourite character. Or maybe CJ.
I might have to rewatch to consider it properly!

BookWorm45 · 07/10/2022 12:04

I've found my tribe ! Hello all you WW watchers. Loved the series, CJ was probably my fave character of all.

Also loved the Pirates of Penzance / Gilbert & Sullivan one with Ainsley in the Steam Pipe Distribution Trunk Room (or whatever it was called), and the one where Toby arranges the funeral for the veteran..

I still carry a huge torch for the glum and endlessly quotable Toby Ziegler.

You are not alone.

theskyispurple · 07/10/2022 12:45

I've never watched it....have been looking for something to get hooked on.... am I in for a treat?

Whitney168 · 07/10/2022 12:49

My favourite scene, which I regularly watch on Youtube, is when Jed gives Charlie the carving knife. Just the right mix of humour from both characters and a sniffle at the end.

It's just brilliant. The script is so clever and it's full of clever people being admirable and righteous. It's also really funny and well paced. Great acting and great characters. It is dated, they all have pagers and no mobiles, the Internet is barely a thing in the early seasons. But the righteousness is timeless!

Any West Wing/Sorkin fans who haven't watched The Newsroom should get on to that too (and it's a much smaller commitment).

Iizzyb · 07/10/2022 13:00

Didn't know it was on! I'll be there with you tonight! Misses point of thread

Sam Seabourn yay 👏👏

katmarie · 07/10/2022 13:01

The West Wing is probably my favourite TV series. The bit with Sam explaining about the future and how fundamental the concept of privacy is, I get tingles watching it now, because it was so prescient.

It’s not about abortion. It’s about the next 20 years. Twenties and thirties, it was the role of government. Fifties and sixties, it was civil rights. The next two decades, it’s gonna be privacy. I’m talking about the Internet. I’m talking about cellphones. I’m talking about health records, and who’s gay and who’s not. And moreover, in a country born on a will to be free, what could be more fundamental than this?

ilovelamp82 · 07/10/2022 13:06

I like to rewatch it in the autumn every year or every other year. It's the best. Gives a really nostalgic cosy feel when I watch it. I'm jealous of the people on here that are about to watch it for the first time.

It's with ads, but there aren't that many / they aren't very long ad breaks so it's OK really. And means I might sometimes go to bed.

Oh OP I’m not going to get any work done watching these clips.

Here’s one of my favourites - In Excelsis Deo

It really is the best series ever. I have the whole boxed set and watch whenever my internet goes down for an evening. That hasn't happened in a while so maybe I should start watching again now the evenings are drawing in.
