On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

She told Beth she wasn't on Facebook on the train. She was lying ?
I've no idea what is going on !

the80sweregreat · 28/09/2022 20:30

Please tell me what is going on?
.. 😂

She said she didn’t have the app on her phone but did on her computer.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 28/09/2022 21:41

She didn't have the app but has it on her computer "but you can't take that everywhere with you" (or something similar)

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2022 22:16

Yes in the train she said she didn’t have the app on her phone but did on her computer or words to that effect

still not sure what her game is by helping the vicar and wife

I wouldn't be surprised if another character turns up next week who is the person the vicar is actually covering up for and Edgar was just a side story

goldfinchonthelawn · 28/09/2022 22:32

I didn't understand why she handcuffed herself when he asked her to. Or why she broke and hid all the tools instead of using them as weapons to fend him off so she could escape. There appear to be tiny windows she could have broken to shout through for help. her behaviour seems very unnatural.

I also don't understand why he didn't properly explain about Edgar at the beginning or why he preferred to protect Edgar and lock up Janice. To be good to the sinner and wicked to the innocent. Seemed very odd for a vicar.

I wondered if the child on the memory stick was Edgar himself as a child, not that he'd been watching it but was the victim and that he felt ashamed. But could be too far fetched.

Very confusing but love the acting. Stanley Tucci is brilliant and I like the one playing Janice. Not seen her before.

Tauranga · 28/09/2022 22:40

She is going to ask the wife to kill her husband the vicar

heartbroken22 · 28/09/2022 23:30

@goldfinchonthelawn watch her in Dracula (bbc) she's amazing and in the outlaws...

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/09/2022 06:39

the second episode was more enjoyable
atlhough i dont undrstand why janice said email my sister and cancel the call?
unless it is because she is in fear of her life?

CosmopolitanPlease · 29/09/2022 08:34

I'm so annoyed with myself for watching this when I swore I wouldn't get in to another tv drama until after all the episodes were aired and the reviews were in. And it's by Moffat, who led me on with Sherlock and Dracula and then fucked up the endings by trying to be cleverer than he is. Style over substance, trying to be crafty over plot.

The bank payment thing was stupid. The vicar's motivations don't make sense; no-one's do. The vicar's wife is a shit actress, and who the fuck googles how to kill someone. The serial killer of women is very camp, are we supposed to think he's gay? Has there ever been a gay male serial killer who murdered women? I know it's fiction but come on there have to be some rules about reality or what's the point.

The clanging statements about Weinstein, Megan and Harry etc are trite and irritating. You can imagine Moffat winking at the viewers like, eh, how about that? Aren't I clever and zeitgeisty?

Argh I hate it but I'll have to keep watching, and I bet I really hate the denouement.

goldfinchonthelawn · 29/09/2022 09:50

This is what really puts me off about his writing. He writes as though he is a genius and the viewer is a plank with no apparent awareness of how heavy handed his 'genius' is. How an investigative journalist didn't immediately work out that some people coming out of a classical concert would be wearing a tux is beyond me. Her dopey confusion pissed me off. Luckily a brainy bloke was there to explain it all to her. FFS.

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2022 09:59

Listening to the murderer is like trying to work out those puzzles you get online that really baffle me. Or trying to do anything maths related in my case !

This is a really good point. Moffat has form for writing female characters and saying ‘look how wonderful they are’ but then actually their only function when you really think about it is to be the person that listens to a man’s explanation. This seems to be very much the case with Beth.

Janice seems more encouraging.

The bit about the internet not telling you how to kill someone was weird. There’s true crime content literally everywhere. Wikipedia is full of the most lurid discussions. Every news website has loads on what murderers have done and how and how they got caught. What was she on about?

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 29/09/2022 11:16

Why would you Google how to kill someone? Unless she's a complete idiot with zero education she should know the basic weak spots of the human body and be able to work out from there what to do

TheCheesecakeIsPoisoned · 29/09/2022 14:53

Janice and the vicar seemed to really know each other, at one point I thought they might be siblings (even before all the memory stick stuff). Was that just me?

Msgrieves · 29/09/2022 17:18

It's so fucking silly, but I will probably watch the last two. Did anyone else hate all the haha boobs and porn jokes, fml Moffat really is a child at heart. I never quite got on with Moffat Who, which was a fairly unpopular opinion, still is.

butterpuffed · 29/09/2022 17:46

Just seen the first two episodes , very strange but very watchable. Not sure what Janice is up to but I guess Moffat is playing with us all [viewers] and thoroughly enjoying it . I'm not sure if everything will be tied up in the end or if he'll keep us dangling .

LadyEloise1 · 29/09/2022 19:43

When he collected her from the station in the early part of EP1 I thought she was his wife, then his sister. .

MistressIggi · 29/09/2022 21:00

dh decided he wanted to watch, so I've just watched it again!

heartbroken22 · 29/09/2022 21:48

Janice gets that crazy look in the eye when she's questioning the vicar and his wife. She sounds a bit like the exorcist sometimes. I wonder if she's a killer. She probably is 😂

ellebelli · 30/09/2022 10:04

I thought Janice was going to have a "hereeeeee's Janice"moment with an axe from the basement.
I think she will end up killing the vicar.
Simply because you know..everyone's a murderer and she's met the right person!
Surely if the note ended up with the police Edgar would be suspected and vicar would be found innocent eventually, however the note will be given to vicar so he can mess things up some more.

One thing annoying me,why hasn't Beth got changed at all?why is she wearing a awful palm tree print top?

Sleeptightnightlight · 30/09/2022 14:05

I wondered if the child on the memory stick was Edgar himself as a child, not that he'd been watching it but was the victim

Yes, I wondered that too, if he had the child abuse pictures as the evidence of a crime committed against him. That could also explain his note, as he thinks the vicar is covering for his abuser.

Anyway, given the 'solutions' to the puzzles so far have all been unbelievable and ridiculous, I'm not holding out much hope for this making sense, but like others feel I have to see the end for closure.

(If you're having frequent sex with your rapist husband that you need therapy for, surely you just have a regular weekly appointment, rather than specifically making an appointment each time you shag? Etc, etc)

Chrysanthemum5 · 30/09/2022 16:38

I think Janice is playing the vicar and wife against each other - the wife was asking what he'd had to give Janice to get her password showing that she's suspicious.

I also think the man in prison is deliberately giving wrong solution. Why would a therapist charge such a weirdly specific price? And why would the admin person need to enlarge the text just because she was in her 50s? So the whole 'the rapist' thing makes no sense

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/09/2022 18:27

It’s getting interesting. I am slightly worried that Moffat isn’t known for tidying up loose ends. I wonder if this is all going to get resolved.
