MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #35): Autumn - season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and Woolly Wookiee oppa

boatyardblues · 27/08/2022 07:55

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Totally off topic, but if anyone is also into Bollywood, one of my fave movies is on Prime: Dum Laga Ke Haisha. It's super quirky and heartwarming.

I have seen it, topic is done really well.
Not your typical Bollywood cookie cutter or Hollywood copied story.

polkettle · 17/10/2022 08:05

(y)ouri Jim's off to the army, chingus 😔

polkettle · 17/10/2022 08:06

Jin! AUTOCORRECT. I may not be true Army but I'm not that bad!

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/10/2022 08:11

JIN!!! 😰

Thank you Pol for breaking news gently to me x

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/10/2022 08:12

Ahhh Jin! 💜💜💜

bettys · 17/10/2022 09:12

It could be worse Army Chingus, they’ll be back in 2025 & we’ll get releases of individual projects sprinkled through the wait 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜.
After all, 2PM went on hiatus from 2017-2021 due to members having to serve one after one!

Rowdythree · 17/10/2022 09:21

Hopefully we can look forward to more concerts in 2025 when they're all finished with their military duty 💜

Saram13 · 17/10/2022 11:16

I agree Bettys (although the 2025 date doesn't seem to be watertight). It was pretty inevitable it was going to happen, given societal expectations in SK. And I'm sure Big Hit/Hybe are savvy enough to spread out solo releases over the next few years to keep fans happy. Hwaiting BTS and ARMY! 💜

JinBhoot · 17/10/2022 12:54

I had a feeling that something will be announced at the concert or soon after.

So are they going one by one? Ideally it should be done in one go (one rip) but max in 2 groups. Otherwise it will be good 7-8 years till we get all 7 together.

I think they will all go in over the next 6 months, probably in age order, to get the last one through their 20 months service by end 2025.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/10/2022 14:28

Any time there's an announcement of a solo project, expect that person to enlist after their related work commitments are done. So Jin apparently is going to have solo work out and promotional engagements completed by end October. Pretty tight deadlines!

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/10/2022 14:46

In other important news, I can reveal that Lidl cheese and onion popcorn is verr verr delicious.

Don't @ me.

MigsandTiggs · 17/10/2022 16:10

Jin/BTS!! Thank goodness for new projects, back catalogues and YouTube videos.

I, too, fell down the Fairy and Devil rabbit hole and resurfaced on ep 10!!! #Marathon 💪

polkettle · 17/10/2022 17:22

3 weeks of veg box cabbage dealt with. Wish them/me luck on their fermentation journey. Stick your heads out the window and sniff. Smell the garlic? That's me.

I predict many kimchi jjigae/spicy cauliflower cheese/kimcheese toasties in your near future. 😄

In a follow-up to the cheese and popcorn intell, Sainsbury’s fresh bakery Portuguese custard tarts are currently rocking my world.

Ahh...sad BTS news. Like Saram13 said, though, it was starting to feel a bit inevitable. There's (understandably) been growing discontent about military service among young Korean men making any kind of exemption politically sensitive as well as potentially difficult for them personally. Although I'm no fan of mandatory military service generally, I do get why South Korea feel the need to maintain it when they have a hostile neighbour with a standing army as large as North Korea's. That doesn't make it any easier for those who have to do it, though, sadly 😔. I wish them all well.

Bea · 17/10/2022 18:30

Sainsburys Portuguese tarts?!.. Not as good as the freshly home made ones!!.. 😂😍😊😇😇

Bea · 17/10/2022 18:34

Bangtan? I'm glad they've gone... They needed to go... The hoo hah if they hadn't would have been unbearable... Also they have stated many times they felt it was their duty to go and I'm glad they've gone on their own terms... Not being led along and being beholden to the SK govt... 2 years will fly past! As someone very wittily stated on twitter... If we can wait years for our Weverse parcels to appear... We can cope with 2 years! 😂😂😂... Army twitter has been very very funny today! 😂😂😂

Bea · 17/10/2022 18:35

Plus! I've got two years to save up for the world tour!! 💜😇😊

I watched all of Love is for Suckers in my pyjamas yesterday and it was great. I love the pairing of Choi Siwon and Lee Da Hee. The reveal at the end of ep 4 was perfect because that plot line was annoying the hell out of me. Can’t wait for this week’s episodes. 😄
