University Challenge to get a new host

LookItsMeAgain · 16/08/2022 17:29

Just after seeing that Jeremy Paxman will be stepping down as the host and question-master on University Challenge.

www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-62561558

He's been in the chair for the past 28 years!

I didn't realise it has been that long.

Who do you think should take over posing the questions, taking into account that they generally have to speak rather quickly at reading out the questions and have to know how to pronounce so many words that are not in the general lexicon for daily use?

Alice Roberts or Hannah Fry. If a journalist, then agree with Samira Ahmed.

Iwantacampervan · 17/08/2022 10:05

Anyone but Anne Robinson - that would make it unwatchable.

I was horrified when AR started in Countdown but I ended up thinking she was brilliant. I really enjoyed her. I think she doesn't want to present anymore so you are probably safe

NellyNothing · 17/08/2022 14:27

What about Martin Lewis from Moneybox. He has an amazing voice and a lovely manner. He isn't as egotistical as some of the other suggestions on this thread either. I'm not sure how old he is though.

QuimReaper · 17/08/2022 14:35

Hannah Fry is not a bad shout!

I'd like to see Kirsty Wark in the seat.

KohLanta · 17/08/2022 14:57

Ooh @FolornLawn I just read Sakura Ahmed's tweet - how absolute cringe!!!! What did she think she was going? I can't work out if she is deliberately trying to make it awkward for the BBC or if she genuinely believes what she's written! Blush

Anyway, on the basis that Ahmed appears to have zero humility...

I'd like to see Maggie Aderin-Pocock do it!! She's brilliant! Emily Maitliss a strong second choice.

KohLanta · 17/08/2022 14:58

Sorry @FolornLawn ^^^^

typo - that should read Samira

upinaballoon · 17/08/2022 18:43

If Richard Can't-pronounce-the-word-picture or Emma Doesn't-know-regard-from-regards gets it I shall have to consider not watching it after all these years.

Yes, it needs someone who just asks questions, but, please, someone who can pronounce words properly.

LizzieSiddal · 17/08/2022 18:53

Very sad to see Jeremy go but you could see in the last series that his Parkinson’s was begging to affect his speech.

I think Amol Rajan would be excellent.

Any of those would be perfect-someone kind. Paxman has been so sneery and condescending for years-there is just no need for it.

Beefilm · 17/08/2022 21:12

Please not one of those popular comic types. I don't want to see it dummed down at all. A serious journalist type would be my preference. Actually, as I miss him from my life, Eddie Mair would be my preference but anyone with a bit of gravitas would be fine.

grannyjacob · 18/08/2022 02:24

Either Eddie Mair or Clive Anderson would be my choice, both intelligent and well educated. Or that really clever student that was on it a couple of years back - Seagull was his name if I recall correctly. But tbh I don’t think it’ll be another white man.

Technophobic · 18/08/2022 03:26

Jon Snow’s at a loose end after retiring from C4 news. He’d be good.

No he gets quite muddled up these days.

Matt Frei or Krishnan G-M?1
Actually Mary Beard or Maggie A-P would be great

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 18/08/2022 03:44

Yes! to Hannah Fry.

balalake · 18/08/2022 07:35

Whoever is chosen, I'd hope they are someone who could host the show for a reasonable length of time, say ten years at least. Successful quiz shows tend to have had a host/presenter for a long period of time.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 18/08/2022 07:38

Jane Garvey would be good

Ameanstreakamilewide · 18/08/2022 08:35

This is always a joy...

CrossPurposes · 18/08/2022 11:10

The new presenter is Amol Rajan.

I still associate UC with Bamber Gascogne 😁

Oh good, I like him a lot.

Stressofherregard · 18/08/2022 11:14

Really glad it's Amol Rajan. He is a serious person. Wasn't sure why all these comics names appeared on people's lists- they were never going to choose one of them.

CrossPurposes · 18/08/2022 11:10

The new presenter is Amol Rajan.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-62588667

Oh no I’m not keen on him, always comes across a bit cocky. Hope he doesn’t try and make it all about him. I will give him a chance though, he might be different on this.

LizzieSiddal · 18/08/2022 12:22

I said upthread I wanted Amol! Very happy, thibk he’ll do a great job.

Coastalcreeksider · 18/08/2022 12:39

I'm not that keen on new presenter, as I couldn't have Clive Myrie, then Harry Hill would have been my next choice.

AlviarinAesSedai · 18/08/2022 13:22

I would have like Clive Myrie if he wasn’t doing Mastermind. Would quite like Eddie Mair
