How on earth have I missed this, just binged watched and thought it was hilarious. It just popped up on my Netflix as a recommendation so I assumed it was new but it's several years old.

I loved all the songs, just brilliantly done and I loved trying to work out which actual musical song they were based on (I'm a massive musical fan). Just watching the live concert now.

Anyone else watched it recently? Any recommendations for similar series to watch, I have watched Jane the Virgin twice through now and loved that.

I really hate it but have still watched a lot of episodes

It's just all the wrong messages to me. I realise it's not supposed to be serious, but it still seems to be emotional abuse and manipulation and that's funny?

The opposite. It's recognising how toxic those traits are. It's a journey

addler · 15/08/2022 17:31

I love nearly all of the songs, but have a particular soft spot for The Math Of Love Triangles.

QueenOfWeeds · 15/08/2022 17:32

Marvellous Mrs Maisel on Amazon Prime is also excellent.

DH hasn’t finished it, but will often sing the UTI song if I don’t immediately go to pee after sex. We’re also both humming the “heavy boobs” song at the moment (I’m pregnant).

PugInTheHouse · 15/08/2022 17:35

Ah yes the UTI song, so so funny, honestly trying to explain what the songs are about to other people is quite amusing. I am looking forward to listening to the soundtrack to relive all the songs haha.

The super sperm song is very funny, just that onesie and the dancing is hilarious. I love in the concert where the sperm are rubbing against her. The cast are all brilliant.

It is really one of a kind show, and I think they rounded it off nicely. Currently rewatching from start. The songs are fab! Weird though, as I don't like musicals in real life!

PugInTheHouse · 15/08/2022 18:07

@Piemam I did wonder about that actually, because they are more spoof/comedy songs I did wonder if it would appeal to people who didn't like musicals actually.

i was thinking as I watched it again just how amazing the cast are. Obviously Rachel had the lead role but it must have been a real challenge to find people who could act, sing and dance at yet the casting is superb.

Piemam · 16/08/2022 00:45

@PugInTheHouse The mix of genres in there, giving everyone something to work with, is not typical of musicals. I think there's a broader appeal, as different songs stick or resonate with different viewers. Like rap, JAP Battle, and the boy bands type songs- more pop culture than musical numbers. But Paula's incredible vocals and the West Covina songs- ah! Pure musical theatre and absolutely delightful.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 16/08/2022 01:12

Loving all the reminders of songs I’d forgotten. Love Kernels is another one I quote and sing regularly - so many good songs!!

BuzzBeeEmoticon · 16/08/2022 02:05

I love it so much (hence my username!) and I never hear anyone talking about it ever. It’s my favourite ever show, it’s so clever and really well done in terms of discussing mental illness etc. I could watch it on repeat forever!

Rachel Blooms book is fab as well. There’s not that much about cxg but Rachel is just like Rebecca and it’s an easy read.

My husband got me a cameo from Paula and she’s so lovely 🥹

I agree with this. The characters are flawed and it is acknowledged several times throughout the show. I don’t think it was meant to be funny really. The music makes it feel light but the message imo is the opposite!

LemonDrizzles · 16/08/2022 02:56

I just listened to season 1 soundtrack today

Similar shows
Steven universe
Unbreakable kimmy schmidt
Unreal
Grosse point (tv show)

I would also day possibly Jessica Jones in a way

There is also centaurland I've been meaning to try. I'd say the my little pony g5 movie is elements to an extent

MoChridhe · 16/08/2022 06:09

I loved it. I recommend " never have I ever". I binged 3 seasons over the weekend

CandyLeBonBon · 16/08/2022 07:00

100% agree @BuzzBeeEmoticon - lots of difficult, murky topics are dealt with that people often don't talk about. It's such a unique show - utter genius!

geojellyfish · 16/08/2022 07:12

Similar shows for me would be Pushing Daisies and Flight of the Conchords.

PugInTheHouse · 16/08/2022 08:32

Thanks for all the recommendations, I have seen unreal and loved that. Totally crazy but addictive viewing.

I agree re the uncomfortable topics, I think they dealt with it well and resolved by the end, yes they do make a joke of it but I feel like it isn't a bad thing in this scenario.

Another super fan here. I've watched the whole thing twice, but quite a while ago, and this thread is making me think I need a rewatch 😁 I was team Greg all the way, until new Greg. Actually thought the way it ended was wonderful, but maybe her at Nathaniel would have been good together down the line. He really grew as a person too.

I've always wanted to watch Pushing Up Daisies, is there a streaming service that has it?

Nathaniel would have been the better match for her. I adored original Greg, but on a re-watch it was clear they would have been pretty toxic together. Nathaniel grew a lot, like Rebecca did, and would have been a much better match for her.

Feeling like I need to watch it again now!

And we all hate Josh right?

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 16/08/2022 15:04

And we all hate Josh right? Grin

Is anyone team Josh?

PugInTheHouse · 16/08/2022 18:17

Definitely not team Josh, team Nathaniel all the way!!

OP posts:
BuzzBeeEmoticon · 16/08/2022 18:25

Josh is the worst. I flip flop between Greg and Nathaniel but mostly Greg!

BigBadBoom · 16/08/2022 18:26

@sulusu Josh was just incredibly dim, and definitely way too dim for Rebecca! Her and Greg were definitely toxic and after she <spoiler alert> slept with his dad...urggggh, no coming back from that.

BigBadBoom · 16/08/2022 18:28

I think I may have to rewatch too 😁
