I've got it free for 3 months but you seem to have to pay for most things!! Anything good to watch?

Also Pachinko, Korean/Japanese drama is excellent.

Brunonononooo · 07/08/2022 19:54

Oh yes echoing others with Ted Lasso, Black Bird and LOVED Slow Horses! Defending Jacob was ok. Schmigadoon is weird but quite funny. Physical looks good too but I haven’t watched it yet. My main issue with it is how crap it is to navigate around?! So annoying!

@GretaVanFleet maybe that's my problem then I just can't find anything!! I will continue to investigate

Apple TV is like the anti-Netflix now. They focus more on actually good content instead of throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks. And then cancel it after two seasons.

I initially doubted Apple coming late to the party, but I immensely love For All Mankind, Slow Horses, Severance, Foundation (actually haven’t finished it, wanted to read the books first) and have several other films and shows to check that caught my eye.

I started by noticing if the Apple logo was on the show suggestions it was included.

Slow Horses, Essex Serpant. Then I’m struggling.

Apple are honestly the best streaming service for content right now. They are not only producing so much great and diverse (in ideas, themes and genres) content, but they also rarely cancel anything. They have given so many shows a second season when any other service would most likely have cancelled them.

Yes agreed. Pretty much everything on there is quality (Apple TV originals at least). Severance for example is the most creative drama I have seen in years. And every show seems to be beautifully shot and edited, unlike some of the dross on Netflix and Amazon lately. Terminal List on Amazon is an example, felt like they missed out the lighting budget completely as everything was so dark, and the sound editing was terrible, I needed to watch it with subs on as I couldn't hear through the mumbling. Whoops I went off on a tangent, but yes Apple is great quality wise.

So far they haven't cancelled anything early either which is another huge plus! Netflix are the worst for that (I'm still angry about Dark Crystal and Santa Clarita Diet). Apple TV doesn't have nearly as much content as the other big streaming services yet, so what I tend to do is to sub for a month, watch everything new on it, then cancel it for another few months until new shows stack up on it.

We've started watching Ted Lasso and I'm loving it!!

Haven't investigated further yet

Pachinko is beautiful and epic. Best credit sequence ever too.
Slow Horses was great fun and I believe there's more to come.
I liked Foundation, and I am not a sci-fi person.
Am finding Surface enjoyable, in a glossy, predictable, full of plot holes way.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 09/08/2022 11:30

IMO, Slow Horses and Severance are two of the best things I've seen on TV, ever. Both well worth a look if you haven't already.

The thing that bugs me about Apple TV is the controller; unlike most Apple products it is almost comedically unintuitive to use.

I just got it but haven't seen anything it wants me to pay for. Is it because I have an Apple Music subscription? It just said I got Apple TV included in it so I've just set it up and had a little look around but not much more than that.

I've just started Black Bird (halfway through first episode right now) but everyone has told me I need to watch Ted Lasso. Will check out some of the other things mentioned on here as well.

justanotherlaura · 09/08/2022 11:44

The after party is really good too, there's a murder at a high school reunion party and each episode is someone else giving evidence to the police. Each episode has a different theme like rom com/action/musical depending on the person telling the story. Really clever

Did you get a new Apple device lately? They give you a year’s free subscription from when you start using it. Or they did at least.

No I haven't. My phone is 2 years old now and we've just switched it to a Sim only contract for a bit as it doesn't need upgraded yet.

I just have the monthly Apple Music subscription which I've actually had for about a year but I've only got round to logging into AppleTV this week. I'm just using the app for it through the Sky box or the TV.

ShinyPikachu · 09/08/2022 12:17

I've just looked it up, seems to be because I have the Apple Music student subscription that I get AppleTV for free with that. I didn't realise it wasn't all subscriptions with them. I should make the most of the next two years with it then I guess. Grin

That’s the ticket.

When the service started out, they basically did what they do with other services like Apple Music and their office software suite, and gave it away free with new hardware purchases, so as to hook people in. They had very little on show at launch fog Apple TV+, or with Apple Music people already had Spotify or Tidal accounts.
