Oh thanks for this, I remember my mum watching this back when it was first on and I’d catch the odd episode if I was in. I’m adding this to my list to watch properly, what I remember was good and the cast was pretty good too.

MangoSmooothie · 07/08/2022 20:26

I’m working my way through them now. There are quite a lot more sex scenes (inc. watching pornography), casual violence and swearing than we see on mainstream TV now, and many of the storylines are farfetched, but I’m enjoying them.

MangoSmooothie · 07/08/2022 20:27

Oh and the smoking…..literally everyone smoking everywhere and all the time. I’d forgotten what it used to be like!

PollyCreo · 31/08/2022 18:27

I'm rewatching this, can't believe it's 22 years old!

The beauty of this series (or the horror) is how you expect the characters to be brought to justice at the end of each episode yet most of them walk away scot-free, very clever writing.

Hotchick1972 · 31/08/2022 18:28

It’s excellent! I’ve been binge watching this again
so much great British talent looking VERY young - and most still acting now

devildeepbluesea · 31/08/2022 18:30

A brilliant series. Next on my list, thanks.

Intellectualmalaise · 31/08/2022 18:31

Another one saying thanks 🙏

I will be starting this later - brilliant series!

You're right about the talent, it's making me crave series 3 of Happy Valley so badly though!

Treetrim · 03/02/2023 10:42

It’s back on Drama and I’m loving it. Real character drama but some scenes that you really would not have on TV today

ageingdisgracefully · 03/02/2023 11:56

It's sooo good, isn't it? I remember trying to watch it when dd was a baby. Just on ep 3 now. Such great acting and writing.

TonTonMacoute · 03/02/2023 14:11

Superb series, Paul Abbott is such a brilliant writer.

I loved it when it was new and it has held up really well over the years.

It is very distracting how many of the actors went on to become familiar faces today, but were just starting ou then.

RosePetalsRose · 07/08/2024 20:12

Just started rewatching this.
It is so good. I love the storylines.
I wish they would make more series like this (real life type dramas).

It also makes me nostalgic for that era.

duc748 · 07/08/2024 22:16

It's great. I always bracketed it with The Street, although I think I slightly preferred this.

RosePetalsRose · 10/08/2024 19:35

I wasn't to keen on Friedas character. I really like Mac though and wish he was in it until the end.

Oneearringlost · 08/10/2024 15:58

I'm just watching this, for the 1st time. But I loved Ordinary Lives, The Street and The Syndicate.
I'm just truly amazed that this was 2001. The behaviour is so, so misogynistic, it feels like the 80's.
Have I forgotten so much, what it was like in 2000s?
I think I must have, ( completely drowned in working and raising 3 children under 4, I suppose).
But, honestly, given that it's working class, underprivileged, struggling people...did we really put up with 80's attitudes in early 2000s? Watch it to see.
I guess we did, having said that, it is wonderful TV, beautifully, painfully written and acted. I love our old, wonderful faces, Sarah Lancashire ( Happy Valley), Siobhan Finnerhan ( also Happy Valley), Christopher Eccleston, Phillip Glenister etc Al.
This is beautiful television, aren't we lucky?

To have the likes of Jimmy McGovern and Paul Abbot, Danny Brockenhurst...
Don't ever miss 'Accused', if you haven't seen it.
