Bbc I player or tonight 10 40pm bbc one.

It's nothing original or amazing. But I'm enjoying it.
Romantic comedy drama basically.
Set in 2012.. which isn't exactly long ago.

Ps Its made by Working Title films which equals high production values and it shows.

I'm enjoying it so much more than I thought I would! I was worried it would be a little bit cringey and it is a bit in places but it's pretty charming. Birdy is mega annoying though.

EachandEveryone · 07/06/2022 23:10

i enjoyed listening to the book even though Im thirty years too old 😃 i will give it ago and hope it better than Conversations with friends.

mewkins · 07/06/2022 23:19

Just watched the first two episodes and it's lovely. I think Birdy's very sweet. They're all quite charming characters ( apart from the painfully cool bloke who is awful).

VivienneDelacroix · 08/06/2022 00:45

It's not usually my kind of thing, but I loved Ep1. I've not read the book, but it took me right back to being newly arrived in London in my early-20s (a decade or so earlier than 2012 though!)

onthefencesitter · 08/06/2022 09:49

It is quite nostalgic even though I am in my 20s. Also lived in Camden in 2012-2013 (university). Still live a few stops down the northern line :)

I’m a fair bit older but I just loved the whole thing. It brought me right back and I might actually buy the book now

YetAnotherNam · 08/06/2022 15:08

I’m also enjoying it but find Maggie unbearable.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 08/06/2022 17:14

I’m enjoying it, nearly finished. I’m liking all main characters. I think it’s honest and I know a women just like Maggie not just looks but many of the choices she makes, her mannerisms and some of her clothes choices.

JoanWilderbeast · 08/06/2022 21:13

Watched first episode and for some reason was pleasantly surprised at how un-serious and un message driven it was 😊Reminded me of watching the ITV version of Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married (loosely based on Marian Keyes's novel) on YouTube during lockdown 😀

LadyEloise1 · 09/06/2022 08:46

I've only watched Episode 1.
I thought Birdy's date was far more attractive than Street. It must be an age thing. Smile

DasAlteLeid · 09/06/2022 14:49

It’s ok, I thought it might be one of those things I turn off in disgust after 20 minutes, but I’ve somehow found myself halfway through episode two without really knowing how I got here 🤷‍♀️

I spent pretty much all my time in Camden as a teen, but that was 15 years prior to this setting! I don’t recognise much that’s been shown, and my main moan about the show so far is that everything looks and feels ostentatiously 2020s to me in terms of decor, language (‘I’m here for this’ - surely more like 2018 onwards??), the coffee shops, the home furnishings etc. There’s a very distinctive design style which has surfaced in the last few years (industrial meets scandy, crustal windows, matt heritage colours), and this show has it in spades. Hey ho. 3/5.

DasAlteLeid · 09/06/2022 14:50

*crittal windows obviously

kindlyensure · 09/06/2022 15:27

I'm enjoying it too but at times it feels very 90s and then other times it feels very today - like when Birdy whipped out her phone to find the way to somewhere, for eg. I keep thinking, did they do that back then? Of course it's only 2012 but it seems longer! So it kind of has anachronistic vibe, but I wonder if that's because people's 20s look/feel the same, whether they were 80s, 90s or 00s?

JaneJeffer · 09/06/2022 15:43

It reminds me of Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married from the late 90's.

JaneJeffer · 09/06/2022 15:46

Oh I see @JoanWilderbeast already said the same! I hadn't read through the thread as the app decided to refresh itself after I read a couple of posts. I thought Birdy's date was lovely, don't like the "cool" guy at all!

JaneJeffer · 09/06/2022 15:47

I'll need to read the book now!

I noticed this too. Some of the language seems too current. And then I can't really remember what was going on in 2012 aside from the Olympics which seems like yesterday. I had a 2 year old at the time so wasn't paying much attention 😂 They may as well have set it now but I guess there would be a much bigger social media factor. The clothes seem very current to me.

What is weird is that there are very few shots of Camden itself (just a couple shot in the dead of night) and no reference of any music etc. Everywhere is very quiet (bars etc).

That's a good point about the decor! Someone has a kind of bamboo eye shape jewellery hanger on their bedroom wall (maybe Amara) and I remember thinking that's quite urban outfitters circa 2018/19.

And I'm sure Maggie was wearing blue denim flares at one point but I'm sure in 2012 you'd be ostracised if you wore them!

SergeiL · 09/06/2022 18:25

Yeah I agree that the language / fashion seems too current. It also feels a bit too ‘try hard’ - look what fun, zany folk we are! But then that is probably true of people who moved into London when they were in their 20s (whereas I moved out in my 20s!).

I too had toddlers in 2012 so have no idea how accurate it might be!

SergeiL · 09/06/2022 18:25

Enjoying it though!

Madeintowerhamlets · 09/06/2022 19:08

I’ve just finished it and enjoyed it although I found the ending a bit disappointing (don’t want to add spoilers). I agree it felt very current at times although maybe that’s because 2012 isn’t that long ago & there aren’t so many details to differentiate it. I’d love to know who the landlord character is based on. Also as a fan of Made in Chelsea I found myself trying to work out who the characters were that Maggie was working with. One was definitely based on Millie Mackintosh!

toastedcat · 10/06/2022 09:53

@Madeintowerhamlets I just finished it as well and I was a bit disappointed with the ending too. Feel like it didn't really go anywhere? The series started off really well but it lost me as it went on.

Madeintowerhamlets · 10/06/2022 17:55

Glad it wasn’t just me @toastedcat , it felt a bit like they rushed the ending. 7 is an odd number of episodes too so they could have added another. I know things don’t resolve neatly in real life but it felt like we needed a bit more in terms of wrapping everything up.

Meh2020 · 10/06/2022 23:54

Also felt the same about the decor, jeans, phone use and the ending but all of that aside I loved it.

I especially loved Jill Halfpenny’s character
