Bbc I player or tonight 10 40pm bbc one.

It's nothing original or amazing. But I'm enjoying it.
Romantic comedy drama basically.
Set in 2012.. which isn't exactly long ago.

Just finished the last two episodes last night and have woken up still thinking about it! Enjoyed the series overall - painfully nostalgic in places as I was around that age in 2012 and had some similar experiences; new serious boyfriends upsetting the dynamics of a flatshare, flings with people like Street, and friends behaving like Maggie.

I found the final episode quite the change in focus but presumably aimed to show maturity - she’s presented with the fairytale falling-in-love opportunity but is stoic and sensible about it, as well as being consumed with the loss of Birdy. I’d definitely watch a second series and I want to read the book now too.

Did anyone else watch it wondering at times if Maggie was actually in love with Birdie? I mean, I have close friends from my childhood/teens. And there was certainly a point in early adulthood when we were essentially each other's significant others. But I definitely never remember dancing together in a nightclub and stepping back to look at them deeply while reminiscing about significant moments in our teen lives. There were times when one of us would get into a very significant relationship and that feeling of them pulling away certainly hurt and you'd miss your usual routines. But never to the point where that hurt would have me tearfully absorbed in flashbacks to our teen bonding.

And I actually realised as an older adult that I'm bisexual and can tell with hindsight that I did have a something of a crush on one of my best friends. Yet I think that Maggie's preoccupation with Birdie was weird and unhealthy. I'm by no means 'team Birdie' but I do think it's right that she takes that step away from Maggie, because she is being used as something she shouldn't be by Maggie.

Also, I've rarely seen someone look as different with and without make-up as Maggie. I didn't think that the teen who was playing her younger self looked anything like Maggie. But she does in the scenes where Maggie is in the bath/shower without make-up and with her hair off her face.

Yes it also occurred to me several times that the love Maggie had for Birdie seemed much more intense and all consuming then your usual best friend relationship. I also wondered a few times if Maggie is self-medicating with all the drink and drugs. She had an air of deep rooted sadness about her and seemed pretty damaged. Or maybe it’s just the impulsiveness of youth.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see a 70s, 80s and 90s retrospective version of this 00s 'single girls flat sharing'?

He reminded me of Adam Ant.

I don't see how they could afford to rent that house.

I keep saying that about the house. It makes no sense, there's just no way they could afford it.

I was their age a good 15 years earlier than 2012, but I still found it really nostalgic. I spent my 20s at parties, sleeping with awful men, and perfecting dance routines.

anonymoooose · 03/07/2022 01:43

I enjoyed it much better than the book. It was boring and didn't get far with it at all but binged the show in 2 days 👍🏽

maryleboneym · 05/07/2022 14:50

It's made me nostalgic for my 20s

Although im ten years older, I don't think life in 2002 was hugely different to 2012. Except Tinder wasnt around

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/07/2022 19:21

I binged it and really enjoyed it after the dire Conversations with Friends.

I met dh in a house share 30 years ago, it brought it all back how much fun/ free everything is before you get tied down with bills and kids and day to day stuff.

The bit at the end in the car with Maggie's mum when she talks about cancer- having lost 2 friends recently , two in remission and another very poorly at the moment she summed it up perfectly 😢

I hope there's not another series,it ended perfectly.

I absolutely loved Maggie's mum - the actress Sophie Thomson (Emma's sister) is wonderful.

I loved her marriage too and the telling off at the breakfast table was brilliant, what will the book club say?! 😂

Doris899 · 05/07/2022 22:34

Makes you remember how good your 20’s were. Lots of random shagging, pissed up every weekend and lots of angst. Not quite as interesting in your 40’s after a 15 year marriage!

Indeed!😂

Interesting to read how much everyone hates Street… I thought he was absolutely gorgeous and reminded me of my boyfriend from a similar age (who also had a pretentious name and looking back was a bit of a twat but also made me fall head over heels like I’ve never done before!)

I felt like the year of the show was very set - maybe more like Sex Education where bits of different years combined to make it feel a bit more timeless?

I also felt like the friendship side was very in line with my own experiences - that intense female friendship where you are so close and rely on each other so much and it can so quickly fall apart when one of you gets a serious boyfriend, that part felt very true to me and I never questioned how close their friendship was at all.

I am trying to decide whether to read the book or leave it.

purpleme12 · 26/07/2022 00:39

This was quite honestly the best series i've seen in absolutely ages
I felt so let down for Maggie by the end.

notawittyname1954 · 26/07/2022 10:58

yep I thought Street looked like Blake Fielder-Civil too. The hat and everything
